You are unreasonable to expect any party who took over the mess left behind by the tories to fix this problem over night. You don't want them accommodated anywhere? You just don't want them here at all.

This is the problem with people in the UK right now. They expect instant gratification/results. The solution to the problems regarding asylum seekers isn't easy, if it were that easy it would've been done years ago. And now with the likes of Trump's war there will be more and more people making this journey, making the problem bigger and continue.

But yeah, it's all Labours fault eh?

It’s not my pledge it’s Starmer’s. There’s no point Labour crowing about hotels closing if it’s just barracks and HMOs.

It’s so easy to see through, the electorate just think yeh nice try and vote every which way but them.

Where do you want them? Like it not they need to be in shelter while their claims are being processed. If nowhere to live, crime will go up. Would the UK folk like to see thousands of tents lining the streets? I very much doubt it.

Starmer is right to end the expensive hotels because the hotel owners were milking it for all it's worth.

They aren’t fixing it at all though. And the recent scandal with Mandleson and him forcing his MPs to vote against an enquiry is a complete clown show. The man is a power hungry narcissist. He’s done badly in these elections and even members of his own party want him to go yet he stands there this morning telling everyone he’s staying put! He’s deluded.

It still costs so if you put how money has been saved you need to include it.

I think you must have meant to reply to a different post. I haven't mentioned costs at all.

Up to Labour. The point it’s another promise and a fail. And trying to pretend it’s a success is driving voters left and right.

It clearly irritates people to see that kind of gaslighting.

Exactly. Telling people he’s closing migrant hotels and claiming it’s a success, when all that’s happened is they’ve been moved somewhere else ie. Barracks and HMOs is the biggest piece of gaslighting bullshit I’ve ever heard!

Who's pretending it's a success?
They are chipping away at the whole immigration and asylum though. That's based on facts.

Anyone using closing hotels in a string of achievements as the pp did, scroll back.

Labour push out those lines, they’ve just annoyed people more as seen last night and over this weekend.

It does. Bad enough the previous Govt were doing it (whilst filling their pockets and partying)

No it's not. He said he'd close hotels, he's closing hotels. How is that gaslighting?

He has to, legally, process these claims. They have to be housed while the claims are going on. People, rightly were peed off with hotels, esp how much it's costing the tax payer.

The sheer amount of people who feel betrayed and politically homeless means that elections for the foreseeable are just going to be massive protest votes. I have never heard the rhetoric being so grounded in ‘getting rid of the old’ rather than real belief in the new.

Spot on. I'm in Scotland thus yesterday's vote differed to the vote in England.

I believe in home rule, however I'm no longer able to vote SNP due to their incredibly poor record on virtually everything. In terms of their raison d'être (the constitution) they haven't shifted the dial on that in 12 years. Their sole purpose now is to exploit the 'independence at all costs' voters (something they, sadly, do very well).

We had two votes yesterday, constituency and regional. The Green party here already had a shot at the top table when their two leaders were given senior roles in government (to prop up a minority SNP) and it was an unmitigated disaster. Their obsession with fringe issues was too much for even the increasingly left leaning SNP to handle. Green party policies would run Scotland into the ground, inverted snobbery ideals that are fit only for, and should be restricted to, the high school debating club.

I voted Reform on both my votes. Largely as a protest vote, and to hopefully contribute towards a movement of change and choice. The landscape is ripe for new parties.

Because people were up in arms about them being put up in hotels because we cannot accommodate such huge numbers on this tiny island. Just closing hotels whilst saying “smash the gangs” and moving them into communities and barracks isn’t solving the problem and it’s not smashing the gangs so yes it’s gaslighting bullshit!

Starmer's 'defence' against being booted out by his MPs will now be
"I will push for a general election if you replace me, which Reform will win. Is that what you want? Because that's what will happen

Monty36 · 08/05/2026 10:45

Happyjoe · 08/05/2026 10:06

But they didn't carry on with immigration in the same way did they?

So far the numbers of immigration halved.
Increased skill workers salary for visa rules.
Ended families being able to come with those working or students.
Have to work for 10 years before can apply for permanent residency.
People have to speak better English here now.
Reduced the time graduates have to find a job
They have made a real effort to get through the huge backlog of asylum claims and are doing so.
Increased the removal of failed asylum seekers and offenders.
Increased staff to deal with asylum claims.
Changes being made to Refugee Family Reunion for successful asylum seekers.
Set up a new force.

Edited

Okay. Some changes. But in all honesty those made really is tinkering at the edges. Increasing staff doesn’t mean the decisions are right.
Making a huge effort, so I should hope. People have to speak better English ?,
The student family change has been useful. But it is tinkering.

Because he’s a power hungry narcissist who uses control and manipulation. He doesn’t care about the wellbeing of the people in this country or how stupid he’s making his own party look.

Calling them stupid implies they don't know their own minds. Many Reform voters are highly intelligent professionals, not the knuckle-dragging working class that the Left-wing want to paint them as.

It suits you to think of them like that, and that's why Reform will win the next GE unless attitudes like yours change.

You’ve replied to a point I didn’t make - in fact, my second paragraph agrees with you. Nobody is voting reform because of hurt feelings. They’re voting because they like what they’re promising.

Your second paragraph makes no sense. If I praise voters for views I don’t share (and cannot conclude are a good idea), they will abandon those views and come around to my way of thinking? This is obviously not true, and that was my original point.

His net wealth is mainly due to him buying a field for his parents donkeys in 1996 (for a few £1000s) and is based on its value IF it had planning permission... all declared.

No one gave him £5m for reasons not yet known, Farage's claim is its for security is BS.
If it were all above board, he'd have declared it as we supposed to have done when he stood as an MP.

We only only know about this £5m because someone investigated his earnings, then we have him buying a house for cash... lying and saying his partner bought it....

Tice living abroad, to avoid tax, is very off, for someone who claims to want to build a better UK.....

all men of the people

Agree with you about Tice who’s a gobshite. However, it’s pointless pointing out that Farage was given £5M whilst plenty of Labour and Tory grandees also have a lot of wealth. And they all accept ‘donations’, freebies and backhanders.

What about Angela Rayner evading stamp duty and then lying about it? You can’t point the finger at one party when they are ALL at it.

Feel free to name one cabinet or shadow cabinet minister who isn’t either very wealthy, doesn’t accept donations/freebies; doesn’t avoid stamp duty/tax through some dodgy activity, or isn’t otherwise feathering their own nest.

Reform winning big tonight will set them up for a general election win. All those councillors and a ground game which the other parties will simply not be able to match.

Labour and Tories so deserve what is coming to them. They have destroyed this country and deserve to be voted into oblivion.

@OneTealShaker while I agree that Labour and the Conservatives have done appalling damage to the country, Reform isn’t the answer.

They are parroting the very worst of what is wrong with the US - health insurance, low taxes for the rich, anti-immigration policies with a side helping of misogyny. But they tap into to media narrative that “outsiders” are the problem instead of trying to find actual solutions. These days all politicians are just about short term looking good rather than long term policies that benefit everyone.

They are no better and if elected will likely do untold damage to the country. If you’re not a wealthy person you’ll be squeezed by taxes and hit with health insurance costs that you can’t afford.

But migration figures are down hugely from the high of 2023 (halved). Number of asylum hostels down from 400 to 185 with a pledge to close them all by 2027. Returns/deportations/entry refusals at an all time high. Massively tightened up requirements on spoken English and ILR requirements. Number of study visas hugely reduced.

It might not be enough for you, but it's wrong to say that Labour have done nothing.

These are Labour figures, right? And you just accept them? OK.

TorroFerney · 08/05/2026 10:52

Pipsquiggle · 08/05/2026 06:30

Do people honestly really like Reform?

Nigel and Brexit have caused more people to be poorer than Labour.

Reform Councils and Councillors are shit

Why aren't people connecting the dots?

What they don’t like is living next to a hotel where some migrants, some not all, are leering and shouting stuff at their teenage daughters. Sledgehammer to crack a nut by voting reform but all these people get told is that they are thick and racist . By people who don’t have these experiences and a lot of whom do not live in the areas where this happens.

TheresAsilverLiningInTheSkyee · 08/05/2026 10:53

OneTealShaker · 08/05/2026 09:54

No it wouldn’t. Thats a lie that’s often trotted out by people who don’t understand how supply and demand works.

Without immigration, businesses would have been forced to pay very high wages, which would have forced then to invest in automation. Raising UK productivity. Win/win.

Automated doctors, nurses and care workers? As these are the jobs many immigrants are filling.
