Now I don't mean something that was expensive but you really enjoyed, but where you felt ripped off.

I'll start.

26 euros for two Sprite's in Paris.

And this was circa 2014.

Absolute madness. What a waste of everybody's time and money. Not the most romantic life for them, either. I wonder if one of them ever breathlessly whispered to the other "What if we kissed at the toilet entrance fee table?"

I've no idea if the Men's Bogs Troll and the Women's Bogs Trollette were married or not - I didn't ask them; I just wanted to get the kids and myself in and out as soon as possible!

I felt ripped off by a friend early 2000s. He fancied himself as a 'computer fixer upper' and had seen to mine when it was running slow a couple of times. I say friend, I suspect, retrospectively that he was trying to get into my knickers, but that's by the by.

Mentioned that my boyfriend's computer was playing up. He said he'd have a look. I said I would pay him obviously, but we didn't agree a price. I had to pick him up as he didn't drive, he provided some sort of 'cleaning CD' for it, which took about 5 minutes to run, then checked it had worked and left. After asking us for £50. I ended up paying half of it as I was so annoyed and embarrassed toward my boyfriend whom I had assured he would be reasonable and that he was a nice man who wasn't trying to get into my knicks, but this well and truly proved me wrong.

I (shock horror) defriended him on fb and was harassed by a mutual friend to forgive him as £50 was a fair enough amount. I reminded said friend that I had paid HER £50 for a much longer job, some months back, when I was moving house and wanted a professional carpet clean. She ran a cleaning company and said she'd do it for £30 but I thought that was far too little so I gave her £50 and a bottle of wine. She said this was far too much and insisted she'd do some more cleaning for it, or just give me the money back. But after this argument over rip-off PC guy I never spoke to either of them again.

The £7 Drop Off Fee on a taxi fare to Glasgow Airport, which I believe is the highest of its kind in the UK. It's not the Taxi Co's fault, it's pure profiteering from the Airport owners, and unadulterated greed.

Gives me the rage every time! At least Edinburgh have the option of a longer walk to a 30 min free area in the long stay carpark.

Edinburgh and Glasgow airports are so close together that my friend (who has lived in various places in Scotland) just flies to whichever has the cheaper flights.

Ah, thanks - for some reason, I (probably mis)construed that they were a couple, and that bog trollery was their proud family business Grin

For all I know, they were, and it was! It was a long (23 years) ago! 🤷‍♀️ 😅

16 Euro for a large coca Cola in Greece. We'd already heard about the scams for large beers being extortionate prices so we thought we'll just get a soft drink. Bill came & BAM 32 Euro for 2!

agreeing to take out £45k worth of debt when I was 16/17 years old, the debt is now £54k even though I have paid about £15k towards it in the last 10 years 😄 (student loan plan 2!) oh and being told ‘don’t worry it’s more like a student tax’

Yeah every time I check my balance it only goes up. And I’m a higher rate tax payer too so have been making reasonable payments

7€ for a pack of 8 ibuprofen in a pharmacy in Italy last month. Pharmacies have it all sown up on the continent, we are an exception being able to buy meds in the supermarket.

I always think this too. It’s absolutely mad. I never buy anything from those pharmacies. I did have to buy throat sweets recently and it was about €20 for a pack of strepsils or equivalent. I travel a lot and I always do a boots shop at the airport for that stuff. I have lived in Europe and really missed Boots / Superdrug.

I'm old enough not to have suffered this, but my children have. I'm wishing I'd gone against the advice of the time and paid it for them up front. Too late now.

My friend travels a lot and now she gets a taxi to the nearest town the runs the airport shuttle bus and gets on that instead. I assume all major airports have them, as she does it all over.

Bluegreenbird · 11/05/2026 18:23

I’d heard the prices in Türkiye had risen but we had been going years and love it so booked for our favourite small village near Bodrum.
Had missed two years but went back last year. Promised my two children we’d have dinner at our favourite spot on the beach on arrival day.
So we pitched up. Got a sharing plate of grilled meat, a meze selection of humus and salads etc, flatbreads, two cocktails and a beer. Bottle of water. Didn’t check prices.
One hundred and seventy pounds.
One hundred and seventy pounds!
It would have been less than half that the last time we went. I live in London and don’t pay that in decent restaurants in central London.
Still love Türkiye and I know inflation has been a killer there so I feel for the locals but shit it really cramped our spending on that trip.

We used the airport shuttle bus for the first time last summer. It was £41 return for the 3 of us, no stress, really quick & dropped you right next to the airport. We drove around 10 mins & left our car on a residential road where the bus stop is. Taxi prices to & from the airport have increased considerably in the past few years

Oh yes, I was in Belgium in 2008 and there wasn't a free wee anywhere but the campsite. We travelled all over and always had to pay a euro!

I've unfortunately put Belgium into my 'countries I'll never return to' based in my shocking experience with their loos
How to write off an entire country lol

When we were just married years ago we went on holiday to Benalmadena (sp?)

We were in a beautiful ceramic shop and I saw a really nice plate hanging on the wall. It was expensive but my husband wanted to treat me.

The assistant said ill get it wrapped for you carefully so it won't get damaged in the case.

Got home and there was a huge dent/flaw which was really obvious when unwrapped.

Feckers had swapped them😡

Have you noticed that "it's a loan" when you complain about a tax rate that's 9% higher; but it's "basically a tax" when you not unreasonably baulk at being landed with a monstrous loan at a very young age that only seems to increase?

Either way, it's a truly nasty betrayal of young people. If any other company was targeting people who are not yet adults and urging them to take out massive loans at very high interest rates, which only increase even after you've paid loads off, they would be denounced as abusive loan sharks, prosecuted and banned by the government... but when it IS an arm of the government, I guess it's kind of cute...

Some restaurants and service stations in France have those squat toilets. I cannot use these, even if bursting. I remember going to a service station around central France in 1999 to a new service station and thought they will have 'proper' toilets. Oh no! Squat toilets. Went round the corner to the disabled - a proper toilet.

I have no sense of balance and won't be able to squat

To make matters worse they are often not actually explained properly. Yes, individuals have a responsibility to make sure they understand what they are signing up to but equally the people selling the loans need to make it clear what it means.

It was never explained to me, I was young and excited, I'd never had to think about debt before. I didnt have a clue what I was signing up to. "You NEED to have it and then you can just pay it back when you earn enough. Everyone else is doing it. It's no problem, all you need to do is just sign here. There we go, see, nice and easy. Now just forget about it and we'll see you next year". 20 years of payments later and I owe more than I borrowed. If I'd had some help with budgeting and an idea of what I was signing up to, I would never have taken such a large loan.

Any other company would be accused of misselling to people who are essentially still children.

PyongyangKipperbang · 11/05/2026 21:55

I think the big thing about students loans is that when they apply, most applicants ARE legally children!

Surely there is some legal come back on that? Surely there is a class action being looked into by someone who knows about these things?

pinksquash13 · 11/05/2026 22:32

12 euros for a bottle of water in Ibiza. That was in 2014 so can't imagine the prices now. About £30 on baclava at a country fair type show. They saw us coming.

Edited

I thought it was a great quip.
