Now I don't mean something that was expensive but you really enjoyed, but where you felt ripped off.

I'll start.

26 euros for two Sprite's in Paris.

And this was circa 2014.

A lime & soda used to cost around 30p so I frequently drank it when I went out! Went for a roast dinner around 10 years ago & they charged £5 for 2 very small glasses. I was with family so didn't want to cause a scene but politely questioned it. They told me they couldn't give me any money back as the roast was already discounted! So they basically admitted they'd bumped the price up on purpose

CamembertnCaffeine · 07/05/2026 20:14

£180 quid to pay for a gardener my landlord booked because of ivy that started to grow into the house. I wasnt told when they were coming, hadn't agreed to it and still don't think the cost of removal was my responsibility. Still irked about that

DustyMaiden · 07/05/2026 20:15

Estate agents fee.

The poor food aside, I think it's great at the right age.

To me it’s not worth the money at any age. It’s really not that great and I’d rather spend my £2.5k for 4 nights in the May half term on a far superior holiday somewhere else.

Still, plenty of people seem to like it enough to keep on parting with their money.

wherearethesnacks · 07/05/2026 20:17

Asked for a glass of white wine at the Disneyland Hotel in Paris ten years ago. Bill was €20.

It was about two mouthfuls.

Harmonious1 · 07/05/2026 20:20

£11.00 for small amount of new potatoes from fruit shop at Christmas time

LoyalMember · 07/05/2026 20:24

An all inclusive holiday in Majorca in 2016. Really rotten draught lager, and cheap local spirits served in tiny plastic glasses. A total rip off and I'll never go on one of those breaks again.

SayDoWhatNow · 07/05/2026 20:34

There is a bougie beige soft-play near me. Had rave reviews so I went. They don't have their prices easily visible, but it was nearly £20 for 2 children (toddler and baby).

As I was paying they asked if I wanted a coffee. Stupidly I said yes and it was an extra £5.

The baby was sleeping anyway.

Absolutely outrageous.

604€ for my cat’s dental cleaning.

Paid £400 for the same last week - ouch. And that's at the independent vets, so is as cheap as it can be.

Still, that's private healthcare for you - my friend is allergic to peanuts and snogged a bloke who'd just eaten some in a bar in the US when we were on holiday. She had an epi-pen on her but she was starting to feel very sick I tried to call an ambulance as I was worried. They wanted $1000 on a credit card before they'd even consent to come out! She told me she'd make do and if her pen didn't kick in we were taking a damn taxi to the ER - luckily she was fine.

Stardancerintheskye · 07/05/2026 20:43

Cadbury world-i cant remember how much it cost but we walked in and where walking back out within 45 minutes (they did give us 3 free flakes each)

The deep in hull-again,cant remember how much it cost but we (an ex and i) went round it within an hour

Utter waste of money both times

Changednameagain999 · 07/05/2026 21:26

This is the opposite. I was very very poor student in Dublin way way back. I was in a changing room and suddenly 40 punts (way back!) fell in front of me. There was no one else in the changing room. There was no one outside changing room. I went and asked staff they said better keep it. Weirdest thing. Made a big difference to me.

£400 is nothing we didn't get the cat's teeth cleaned due to not being able to afford it now looking at £1500 for teeth removal...

Hi OP, I have a few...

Drinks at a swanky place in Italy before going to an outdoor concerto. DH and I dressed up to the nines. One glass of prosecco and a glass of red wine - 70 euro!!! This was about 10 years ago. The venue was absolutely gorgeous though, so I didn't mind too much.

Three tickets to Lapland UK - £650! DH thought I'd lost the plot. However, it was magical and DH still talks about how much he enjoyed it! 😂

Small pot of olives from an M&S at a train station - £5.95 and the pot had 7 olives in it.

DH bought DC a bag of hard boiled sweets at a UK airport to help with ear popping on the flight - £15! He nearly fell over on hearing the price!

A few weeks ago (admittedly in Waitrose) I saw a box of 6 eggs for £6.95! I did not buy the eggs.

Cakeandcardio · 07/05/2026 21:34

£7 for a bottle of water (a litre one for the table). This was 2011. I was too young and lacking confidence to just ask for tap. Didn't even have the money to be forking out for water either.

SpecialG · 07/05/2026 21:39

At a concert in 2008, Twickenham stadium. 4 beef burgers, 4 white baps £32. No cheese, salad, bacon etc. Just 4 average burgers and cheap rolls.

The M and M store in London! £32 for 4.small pots of sweets. Each pot contained less than a grab bag available in Asda for less than £2

Dishwashersforever · 07/05/2026 21:42

Well, they fund 97% of children’s childcare - so the government has in fact taken it upon itself to support early years education.

Do you apply this to just preschool education, or do you feel the same about primary and secondary schools too?

Schools are not for childcare but for education but as a teacher most parents see it as a babysitter rather than educational

The Deep is a year ticket and you must have whizzed through it.

CW took an afternoon. I think we only got 2 chocolate bars though and were really disappointed!

Maybe you need to walk more slowly! 🤣

mamaduckbone · 07/05/2026 21:56

I paid £1.89 for a small pack of maltesers in the hospital RVS cafe today, which was pretty shocking.

😆

I am lazy and often get Tesco meal deals. They are a rip off anyway but especially today...
I was on autopilot and grabbed a pasta main, a fruit pot side and a drink. Should have been about £5 but I was on autopilot so just paid and it was only after I left the shop, I clocked that it cost over £13.

They'd moved the fruit pot "mains" to where the fruit pot "sides" used to be. So I'd basically bought 2 mains and a drink I didn't even want. There was no way this wasnt designed to catch people out.

The fruit pot "main" by the way was 4 strawberries and a handful of grapes and about 6 blueberries.

I didnt know that about the deep

Cadbury world was dead-there was about 3 other visitors and us that day

We're not going back

TheGardenPond · 07/05/2026 22:13

DH bought 3 cannolis (sweet pastry tube with cream inside) from an Italian cake stall in our local really normal market. £18 for 3. We were horrified.

TheWeekOnTheDalymountSeat · 07/05/2026 22:14

£80 for two bottles of Prosecco at a bar in Edinburgh in February. We were the only ones in there!

NeverDropYourMooncup · 07/05/2026 22:27

It's a toss up between;

Being charged full whack for a holiday club when they decided to close it for the last two weeks of August on the Friday afternoon, having already moved it from somewhere that was reachable by public transport to a rugby club that required 3 buses and a 25 minute walk along a dirt track after taking payment and being open for 2 days at the usual place.

and

My employer announcing two days before Christmas that he'd decided to take 3 weeks off, we were therefore closed and as he'd already closed for a fortnight in August to go on holiday (where I wasn't paid as I hadn't accrued any holiday by that point), it was going to be unpaid as well. And then he didn't pay me my December salary - the three weeks I had worked - until 23rd January as 'I wasn't in the country on New Year's Eve to pay you',
