Now I don't mean something that was expensive but you really enjoyed, but where you felt ripped off.

I'll start.

26 euros for two Sprite's in Paris.

And this was circa 2014.

50p for a pee in Windermere and it was card only. There was an older lady behind me who didn't know what to do so I paid for her too. £1 for two wees, ridiculous.

Fish and Chips in Aldeburgh. Tiny fish, full of bones and undercooked chips.

They had a reputation 20 years ago for being brilliant, which is the only reason they get away with it.

Go to Sole Bay in Southwold or the Fish Dish in Felixstowe instead.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 07/05/2026 16:55

Go to Gail’s, buy some teas and orange juices and maybe a cake or two. Won’t get much change from £50. DB and SIL love Gail’s too, despite DB once seeing a rat outside in the garden in the Hackney one.

One of my teenage DC got carried away at a pic n mix at the Christmas market and was too shocked at the £43 bill to say anything - she bought it and somehow persuaded me to buy it off her, mug that I am. Obviously she ended up getting to keep it anyway - it was all a bit stale and outrageously expensive, given that the market was due to close 2 days later 😭

EnglishBreakfastTea1 · 07/05/2026 16:56

I also get salty paying the national bus fare of £3. Stagecoach buses in my town used to do returns for £5.60 but now you have to pay 3 quid each way. Fair enough I can go three miles or thirty miles on that bus it was two quid before Labour took over the government and 50% increase is outrageous. Public transport outside the big cities is an absolute racket.

£24 for two red wines in a London theatre a few years ago. Doesn't seem that bad now but at the time I was fuming.

That's actually pretty average for a London theatre

£38 for a Sutton Hoo free range, organic (possibly fed on corn from a silver salver) chicken about four years ago. It was delicious but still a rip-off.

Yeah but not really when you consider that the farmer had to feed and house that chook for 12 weeks (ish) plus costs of slaughter, packaging, transport, etc.
I'd rather pay more (and eat chicken less often) and know that the chook had a decent life and better death than most.

Notyouagaindear · 07/05/2026 16:59

Oh, also the website Superprof - it supposedly connects you with tutors in your area. The £39 joining fee that covers one free lesson is actually a rolling monthly fee, as I found out too late. They argued that it allows me to connect with as many tutors as I want, as apparently one Geography A-level tutor is not enough 😂. Needless to say my credit card company swiftly arranged a charge-back. If you are bored, look at their Trustpilot reviews.

About 10 years ago anniversary dinner at Le Gavroche in Mayfair.

Tasting menu for 2 with wine flight was around £500ish. Knew it was going to be expensive so didn’t mind the £500. What bothered me was that I was starting to feel a little ill from all the different wines. I asked if for one of the pudding courses could I have a small cup of camomile tea instead of wine. Waiter said no problem. Checked the bill at the end and they’d added £4.50 for the camomile tea. That pissed me off.

Mcdhotchoc · 07/05/2026 17:04

Anywhere Legoland im looking at you, where you cannot get to on public transport and then charge you for feckin parking. Include it in the bloody admission charge. It's just a running cost.

Spending £30 on olives at North weald market

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 07/05/2026 17:09

Every time I've had to call out the emergency 'we come same day' plumbers because nobody local can come out for four months, even though there's water pissing all over the floor or I'm having to flush the toilet with buckets.

It's about £100 call out fee and £150 per hour for something that's fixed in twenty minutes, but desperation drives me to it!

CoralOP · 07/05/2026 17:10

£1050 for a couple of stitches in my dogs paw.
Now my dogs a hunting breed so gets in all kind of scraps, I wouldn't of took him to the vet but he was staying with my MIL and she panicked and took him to the emergency vet.
In the breakdown £55 of that was 'bandaging of foot', the bandage fell off before he even got home, fuming.

CoralOP · 07/05/2026 17:13

I went to get popcorn and a drink from the cinema and it came to £26 because it had a gimmicky cup. I told her to empty it back out because there's no way I'm paying that!

PinkStarJumps · 07/05/2026 17:18

£10 to drop someone off at the airport. It's just gone up from £7, so a 42% increase in a few months. Bloody swindlers

I know they face rising costs too; but not all that long ago, most chippies would just shovel as many chips as they could fit into the bag/paper, and even a 'small' portion would be loads. Nowadays, you look at a 'large' portion - that one time would have easily satisfied three people - and it's often a decent amount for one person (MN competitive under-eaters aside), but you'd resent having to share it!

My old, favourite chippy used to charge £2.70 for a hamburger in batter in a roll, and they'd pile on a few chips. It was honestly better than a hamburger supper in most other chippies. Sadly, those days are gone now. You definitely don't get any chips with it, and it's about £5. A hamburger supper's about £9.

ArtyFartyCrafts · 07/05/2026 17:18

£44 / month for healthy pet club for my two cats. For that they get a flea treatment every 3 months, worming tablet every 6 months and their annual injection. It’s gone up by more than 10 quid a cat because they’ve added loads more ‘benefits’, all of which are for dogs and rabbits. 🙄 In reality it’s gone up because my previously independent vet practice has sold out and joined a crappy national franchise who are all about fleecing their customers for maximum profit.

Moveoverdarlin · 07/05/2026 17:20

27 grand in stamp duty when I bought my house.

We were in Paris 3 years ago. One cafe wanted 10 euros for a can of Coke! We left

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 07/05/2026 17:24

Years ago aged 15 on a pilgrimage or something I bought a Virgin Mary bottle of holy water at Aylesford Priory. No idea how much I paid but DM laughed afterwards said I was a stupid girl and said it was tap water. We’re Protestants. Step dad is lapsed Catholic.

TheShoeLady · 07/05/2026 17:30

A fancy baklava and Turkish delight shop in Monterey California.

It was sold by weight so you would choose what you want then they weighed the whole box. I can’t even remember how much it cost, but I think about £25 for about 6 little pieces.

And it was the most shit baklava I’ve ever had, not crispy at all, just soft dry flaky pastry. Still annoyed now about 10 years later!

Theonewhogotthecake · 07/05/2026 17:33

In an Ibiza nightclub 20 years ago I paid £5 for a TINY bottle of water. I bought the same bottle in a corner shop the next day for 20p. Yes, I was desperate

Flamingojune · 07/05/2026 17:33

Out of hours plumbers

TheShoeLady · 07/05/2026 17:33

Oh and calling out an appliance repair man to fix my broken oven. He changed the digital clock from 0:00 (must have been a power outage in the night) and it came on.

He did say he probably should have suggested that on the phone but still charged a call out fee. Wanker.

Centre Parcs

Not just the holiday cost but, bar the swimming, you could do better versions of all the activities for a fraction of the cost if you just drove a few miles down the road.

Centre Parcs is like the emperor’s new clothes imo.
