Now I don't mean something that was expensive but you really enjoyed, but where you felt ripped off.

I'll start.

26 euros for two Sprite's in Paris.

And this was circa 2014.

80Euros for 2 brandies in an admittedly very nice hotel in Venice - still smarts.

$24 dollars for 2 G&T in Times Square (I know, I know) about 14 years ago - robbing bastards - now that would be a bargain.

£8 for half (!) a lager in London last weekend.

There's a theme here...

G&T price doesn't seem outrageous, even for 2012.

£24 for two red wines in a London theatre a few years ago. Doesn't seem that bad now but at the time I was fuming.

In a posh shop in another country that had some old toy cars alongside furniture and clothes.. my 2.5 year old wanted one. We asked the seller who put up a 2 and a 4 with her hand... Great. 2.4 euros.

Went to pay. 24 euros, for one tiny old hotwheel sized toy car with the paint chipping off.. I'm sure it's vintage or rare but none of that mattered for a 2 year old.

Too proud (and stupid) to turn away.

He isn't into cars anymore, but that one is never getting throw away...

£7 for a bowl of 'homemade' vegetable soup in a cafe in York about 5 years ago, it was absolutely Heinz Big Soup chunky vegetable. It's the only bad review I've ever left.

Veiledveritas · 07/05/2026 12:10

5 mins for vet consultation as cat had upset stomach. 1 anti sickness injection.
£115.

Iriseee · 07/05/2026 12:11

I was charged £7.50 for a posh loaf of bread about 10 years ago.

Thingybob · 07/05/2026 12:13

About £5k for double glazing almost 50 years ago. House only cost £12k

GinWizard · 07/05/2026 12:14

Forgot my water bottle when I arrived at the gym last week and paid £1.99 for a 500ml bottle of water from the gym vending machine. Creased me.

Lomonald · 07/05/2026 12:14

$10 for a bottle of water from a hotel vending machine in vegas I was just recovering from the $60 taxi fare🙄

jeaux90 · 07/05/2026 12:15

I enjoy living in the UK but feel ripped off by the tax I pay, does that count? 🤣

Every time I've ever had to pay to use the toilet in a train station concourse. I'm already paying a fortune for the train, and now I have to pay 50p for a wee!!

Does it not? I pay £6 for a g &t

guinnessguzzler · 07/05/2026 12:17

£15 for a foam finger at Gladiators Live! However, we get them out every time we watch Gladiators and the kids love them so I have to admit it was actually worth it although the profit on those things must be huge!

£8.50 for a Malibu and Coke in Lucerne, Switzerland in 2002. It was all hideously expensive.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 07/05/2026 12:19

ExDP throwing me out of our home which was in his name but I’d put over £150K into.

I was played. I see it now. People warned me; I was an idiot.

The worst part? I always saw it coming.

£38 for a Sutton Hoo free range, organic (possibly fed on corn from a silver salver) chicken about four years ago. It was delicious but still a rip-off.

Can I ask why you put £150k in someone else’s house with zero financial protections in place for you?
I’ve had some doozies with exes where I’ve been an idiot, but never crossed that financial line.

I’m just asking as I have a friend about to make the exact same mistake and she just won’t listen (and the guy is a drug addict whom she has already given £8k to, so I doubt anything will get her out of this if she refuses to see it) but I’m just trying to understand it to see if there is anyway to get through to her.

SwirlyGates · 07/05/2026 12:23

About 10-15 years ago, I paid extra for cream on my dessert. 60p as I recall. For that I got 3 little dabs of that squirty stuff from a can, each about the size of a little fingernail.

I'm still bitter.

Twattergy · 07/05/2026 12:24

£10 for a pot of tea in Verbier about 15 years ago.

BerryTwister · 07/05/2026 12:24

Cherries in M&S about 30 years ago. I piled a load in a bag and didn’t weigh them, so when they were weighed at the till I discovered it was an eye-watering price. But I had a queue behind me and was too embarrassed to put them back. I learned a valuable lesson that day!

Oh and those fancy flavoured jelly beans in a department store in Manchester in the 80s. I’d never seen anything like it before, got overexcited with all the crazy flavours, and ended up paying more for them than I’d spend on a week of food normally!

Splat92 · 07/05/2026 12:25

700 AUD for a constipated cat
