If they allow the cruise ship to dock snd passangers travel all over the world.
Symptoms may not show for up to 8 weeks.

it has been very traumatic for those on board the cruise ship

Eightdayz · 11/05/2026 16:13

Poor old gene Hackman spent weeks around a person who was in the grip of this disease and he didnt get it.

It doesnt spread easily like other viruses.

A small amount of googling will tell you this.

Get a grip

I’d agree in general that it doesn’t spread easily and that there’s no need to worry.

But your comment about a small amount of googling is ironic, since a small amount of googling would have told you that Gene Hackman’s wife died from a strain that does not pass from human to human at all. And is a totally different strain to the one that has caused these cruise ship illnesses, which is one that does pass human to human.

I stand corrected!

Of course there is. It’s an outbreak, passengers will need quarantining and handled in a way they probably didn’t have the resources for. Nobody wants to be the country that messes that up and allows the spread of that virus either.

They took the blame for Spanish Flu, after all.

MsGreying · 11/05/2026 16:47

It'll happen at the speed of science.

Focacciaisyum · 11/05/2026 18:09

Anyone else think its insane that theyre being held in a facility for 3 days then sent home and asked to isolate for 6 weeks?
There's no way all 20 - or even any of them - will stay away from people that long if theyre feeling fine. Its an unrealistic ask. So they feel.fine, they go for a coffee but there is a possibility for pre-symptomatic spread according to ECDC so now there is the possibility its out. And it kills 1 in 3. So if it were to spread thats actually a biblical level plague. You think lockdown was bad? Imagine the potential lockdown for this!!
And apparently its more like Spanish flu in thay the people most at risk ar aged 20s-40s because of the cytokyne storm effect.
So why risk it? Just quarantine the 20 people like other countries are doing. Then there is no risk to the health of the wider public, no risk to the economy, no risk to schooling etc.
Ita not like the group couldn't afford to pay for their quarantine, a cruise like hat would have cost probably 30k up!

GarlicMind · 11/05/2026 18:46

OMG, @Focacciaisyum, you're right! I had been pleasantly surprised they were being quarantined in a hospital - thought we had learned something from C19 after all. No such luck. I agree, they simply won't self-isolate for six weeks.

[considers toilet roll and bread flour order]

It wasn't that expensive a cruise, however - most passengers will have paid around £7k. https://www.antarcticacruises.com/ships/hondius

Yep absolutely and those people WILL break quarantine. Definitely
Especially with yhe way the risk is being played doen by government messaging. The woman who was removed from a flight in Johannesburg for example was unwell with what she MUST have known was serious. He husband had died of the same thing 2 weeks before. But she travelled anyway.

MariaMagdalenaa · 12/05/2026 07:24

I just know I am not booking a cruise anytime soon.

I decided that back when that ship was stuck off Japan for ages in Covid.

Faceblocks · 12/05/2026 07:38

Not a chance in hell that people isolating at home won’t break the isolation rules

WillowTit · 12/05/2026 07:40

You need a few bob to go on these trips so I imagine they have, they are mostly probably retired

Will you also not book any hotel stays or avoid any gatherings where people are in close contact? No meals out in busy pubs or restaurants?

WillowTit · 12/05/2026 07:56

certainly an unforgettable trip of a lifetime!

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 12/05/2026 08:00

Well trump is set to disclose aliens in 2/3 months This has already started and the population needs to reduce for the planet so 😬

TipsyLaird · 12/05/2026 09:34

Are these the same people who were all freaking out about monkeypox a year or so ago?

WillowTit · 13/05/2026 06:50

10 more are arriving for quarantine

Jollyjupiter · 07/05/2026 08:01

To all the mocking replies...there must be a reason the Spanish gov have been blocking the ship docking in mainland Spain. There is obviously some concern on their part.

They blocked the ship because they could. Why should they take on the issues caused by another country? hardly a good use of Spanish tax payers money.

That decision doesn't have to based on epidemiology.

GH likely didn't have the Argentinian strain that can transmit person to person.

It's not something to panic about. The measures put in place will be well advised upon.

This doesn't follow though. If you are in a restaurant etc. and you get this ill, you can simply go to hospital and get good care and support. On a cruise you can't. This is likely why there were deaths on board - no appropriate care.

Focacciaisyum · 13/05/2026 07:15

I mean the parallels with 2020 are pretty obvious. Government too distracted by nonsense to.notice what's going on - last time it was Brexit means Brexit, tgis time its Starmer fighting for his career, then UK being the outlier in the precautions stakes. Id also point out that Zubir Ahmed the junior health secretary has just quit and Wes Streeting the actual Health Secretary is in a meeting with the PM today. Will he quit too? Maybe neither want to be the next Matt Hancock?

I've got my lighters, my emergency civilian MRE rations, some distilled water and penicillin.

Also got some snakes in case our garden is infiltrated.

Can't be too careful.

This made me inelegantly snort on the train 🐍

There has been a small hospital facility on every cruise I have been on. I had excellent care during a cardiac event on one ship. The doctor who helped me spent 6 months on board and six months as an A&E consultant every year. They even had a small operating theatre.
