Symptoms may not show for up to 8 weeks.

xposted, @SeekingHappinesss!

Blimey, the sweating sickness of Tudor times may have been caused by a Hantavirus! Let's hope that doesn't make a come-back! 😄

hahabahbag · 07/05/2026 18:46

It’s 2 days sailing from the canaries, the people onboard want to leave the ship and comes from across Europe, docking there with onward charter flights arranged makes sense. The only passengers who were ill were taken off, remaining passengers are not ill.

Changednameagain999 · 07/05/2026 18:48

Wouldn’t want to be on the plane they’re flying home on.

MushMonster · 07/05/2026 17:58

I think they need to exterminate the rodents in the ship. Hopefully ahead of docking. Clean it all well.

I do not think there will be an epidemic from the humans. They are going to be on quaratine anyway. But if the rodents dock too, then there could be a bit of an issue.
I hope those affected recover well.

Two of the passengers went bird watching on a rubbish tip, that’s where they caught it.

I think it's a special charter flight?

LondonSymphony · 07/05/2026 18:52

Thanks for your take on this but I’ll leave this one to the people who know what they’re doing. The attempts to turn this into the start of some covid style pandemic are absurd, as are suggestions that it’s not allowed to dock and just floats around like some sort of ship of death.

30 people disembarked the ship on 24th April. Case 1 died on 11th April. Case 2 was one of the 30 and she died on 25th April after collapsing at the airport after being removed from her second flight.

It is for the Spanish but I don’t think for the 8 British.

FionnulaTheCooler · 07/05/2026 18:56

Maybe if we all stand on our doorstep and clap it will go away.

I’ve already seen posts from people shrieking with glee at the very thought of lockdown and no work and not having to leave the house.

Except there will not be any furlough this time round. Oh dear,

luckylavender · 07/05/2026 19:05

As often is the case, first post nails it

8 week incubation period.
The British have been told to self isolate for 45 days.

Bonkers.

To all the mocking replies...there must be a reason the Spanish gov have been blocking the ship docking in mainland Spain. There is obviously some concern on their part.

Sure, but that consideration is quite likely to be something like public perception, seen to be responsible, these people not having visa for Spain, the risk of getting stuck with the costs is getting these people back home... You don't have to fear an epidemic to take a few days to assess whether you can take all these unknown people. You might want to liaise with their governments etc.

Not mocking you at all for the question, just trying to say there are many reasons it takes time to decide this stuff.

It’s UP TO 8 weeks. It’s not 8 weeks exactly for every case. I imagine very very few cases incubate that long. It’s like going to a sale that says up to 80% off but when you get there 99% of items are only 20% off but there’s one random XXXXL shirt that’s 80% off.

8 weeks is the absolute upper limit of possible incubation period though. 2-4 weeks is more typical.

They’ll probably be on next jet2 from Tenerife!!

RachLeeds · 07/05/2026 19:42

Why are people saying it’s rare to spread when 2 people have caught it from flights already linked to this outbreak.

AnyoneWhoHasAHeart · 07/05/2026 19:42

This government are just being irresponsible now. We should have locked down as soon as the first case was reported. No work, no school, furlow should have been agreed already and Andrex should have gone into mass production.

I hope Astrozenika are working on the vaccine already. ;)

They haven't yet tested positive so we don't know that. All the confirmed cases are passengers and crew from the ship.

Because as far as I’m aware those cases are not confirmed (the flight attendant is one, I’m not sure of the other one?).

Plus, the flight attendant was on the plane with the woman too ill to travel, and who had respiratory and gastrointestinal symptoms, so who knows what sort of contact they had eg did she cough directly into her face, was she sick on/near her, did the flight attendant have to clean up vomit? If so, that wouldn’t really contradict anything that is said about how it is spread through close contact, bodily fluids etc.

I'm more interested in why the media has started saying Cape Verd and not Cape Ver-day as they used to.

Their trying to approximate closer to the Portuguese pronunciation of the second word (and getting it wrong)

2Hot2Greedy · 07/05/2026 20:56

I wonder how long it'll take for NannyAndJohn to pop up?

There's a throwback/niche MN reference for you 😂
