22:30 work call - completely unacceptable?

1000 replies

shortbreadconsumer · 05/05/2026 11:21

I received a work call from someone in my organisation at 22:30 last night. I answered, thinking it was an emergency. The colleague was completely hysterical and impossible to understand. In the end I had no choice but to end the call with 'we can discuss this in the morning.'

This morning I spoke to the persons line manager about it, who said that it was 'unfortunate, but not unreasonable' for this individual to have called me as I had not answered any emails from said colleague over the weekend. They had sent me over 50 emails this weekend. I did not see the emails as seniors within the organisation take an 'if it's urgent, they have my number' approach.

I am more senior than both of of these colleagues and I was 'on call' all weekend as the most senior point of contact in the organisation. However, this was not an issue that required weekend working and, more importantly, it was not an issue that I needed to be consulted on. It was very simple and should have easily been resolved in working hours by this individual alone - her direct line manager would not have needed to input either.

AIBU to think that this was unprofessional and unacceptable from both of them? After no sleep, I've reached that 'was it really that bad' point where I am so sleep deprived that I am not sure whether I am overreacting in my annoyance or not!

If you were meant to be contactable, then you should have been.

However, I completely loathe the modern expectation of everyone being available 24/7.

If you don’t want to work like that, it’s totally understandable but you need to be clear about your boundaries and ensure your role and your employer are aware of and can accommodate those boundaries.
If it’s not something your current role can accommodate, then maybe you should look for something else.

Wow you are very unreasonable. You were on call you missed 50 emails and then when your colleague eventually called you in clear distress you dismissed them. I hope your manager pulls you up on your behaviour.

Have you read the OPs posts? This colleague was presumably having a MH crisis, not OPs remit and actually very dangerous for her to give advice.

The emails were not missed, because she was under no obligation to view them at the weekend.

What about OPs mental health and her need for downtime?

Your ON CALL .. that means ... u TAKE CALLS .. thats what on call means.

In the name of God. 😡 There is a person, another person, who is paid to be on call, the OP only gets involved in extreme circumstances. She doesn't have to look at her emails.

I KNOW … I’m getting so invested in this just because people a twisting themselves into a pretzel just to try to find OP in the wrong in some way, even calling her cold when she spent 50 minutes with a distressed colleague she wasn’t expecting late at night 🤷‍♀️

One blames her for answering a call from a number she doesn’t know 🤷‍♀️! She should’ve not done that!

Moodibags · 06/05/2026 18:26

Bookaholicwithwine · 06/05/2026 18:16

Yes the OP says they were on call ? They called someone else because the OP hadn’t responded to emails . Which I think they should have been doing . But I clarified by saying it does really depend on what line of work she’s in

Jeez 🤦‍♀️ 🫠

The junior colleague was distressed after trying to contact you as you were supposed to be the on call person! .

How you handled a possibility vulnerable junior member shows your true colours!

You are just lucky they didn't do something drastic! You could have tried to calm the person down and maybe you could understand them and handled it very differently.

Shame on you for how you, as a senior manager (!!!), handled that incident!

This thread is a real insight into how very little people understand what they're commenting on here on MN.

An AI bot would produce answers that were far more intelligent and relevant than at least half of the posts on this thread.

I think humanity might be doomed.

And seeming to not understand its quite easy for a lot of people to be empathetic and supportive to a person directly while also being annoyed at the situation but not show it to the person. Two faced i suppose.

I regularly have to sit and listen to my teams various issues and offer help/support etc. I can also feel absolutely drained after it and be really pissed off they are dragging me in and loading me up with their personal dramas and expecting me to help practically. But the expectation nowadays really is that I should be a therapist, financial advisor, marriage counsellor, well being advisor, their mother.....

I rarely use the f-word, but the responses on this thread are driving me to it.
I don't know how some people manage in day to day life, I really don't, given their apparent inability to read and comprehend a couple of paragraphs of plain English.

Ok then let’s try ONE LAST TIME slowly for the people at the back …

OP was on call but only to one person only, if an emergency they couldn’t themselves handle … the person was … the person whose details were listed in the email that went out to everyone as the contact ‘on call’ person

The distressed employee didn’t contact the person who WAS there she somehow found OP’s contacts instead, but obviously would only be expecting contact from the on call employee, on the vanishing rare occasion that person couldn’t manage the situation without her

I work out of hours nights/weekends and if I were trying to get hold of my manager who was standby by at home for that period I would expect them to answer the phone and be professional and reassuring. Especially at 22.30. When I work standby (which I do on occasions as I have 20+ years experience) I have had colleague call me at 3 am to ask me a question. I’m being paid to stand by. I don’t care if that question is “where do we keep…..” if they feel impacted by something that they cannot resolve, and it’s my job to support them at that time, then that’s my responsibility and I take it seriously.

IT WAS NOT THE OP's RESPONSIBILITY TO BE ON CALL FOR GENERAL STAFF ISSUES.
