AIBU to think that Reform pose a real threat to UK democracy?

Reform’s unelected chairman, Zia Yusuf, has announced that Reform will build detention centres housing immigrants waiting for deportation in areas which vote Green (or rather those which don’t Reform). They call this ‘an exercise in democratic consent’ and it’s been - rightfully - condemned by all other parties.

Last week he was threatening to ‘carpet bomb’ areas in which their MP had voted a certain way in parliament.

Obviously, this is detracting from the discovery that Farage received a £5million donation in 2024 when he seemingly changed his mind and decided to run as an MP.

So, while politics can be heated, all parties are open to criticism, we can debate the reasons behind the rise of Reform, AIBU to say that this approach from Reform is unacceptable in a democracy and an alarming indicator of how they would be in government?

Not fighting for a better future in their homeland?

Exactly. So what, we end up with a handful of small countries taking 70% of the world population while the rest a swathe of sparsely populated continents ruled over by despots?

Ah okay, if you're opposed to the very principle of immigration/ asylum, then good luck indeed with this.

This is lead by the fact that Farage has his head so far up Trump’s arse that he’s trying to emulate him. Although I know people who have voted Reform who won’t now because even they think Trump’s a cunt,

The exception in the Thatcher cabinet of course was Michael Heseltine who made a genuine commitment to regeneration and is well respected here.

And still talks more sense than current Tories, was opposed to Brexit and is absolutely against Reform (I am not a Tory btw)

Yeah I mean it’s very direct democratic representation isn’t it really. How a place voted indicates which policies ghey would approve of. I’m actually surprised by how many greens seem to find this objectionable. I thought they would welcome it, if they object to the concept of detention they could always ask reform to just not detail the migrants they house in their area and let them roam free…

Yep. I'm happy with them "roaming free". It is explicitly the detention I have an issue with. We do have hotels with refugees and many settled refugees in the area and lots of community action to support them.

But direct democratic representation isn't OK. Would it be OK for Labour to raise funds for the NHS by moving Reform voting constituencies onto an American style insurance system? Or make benefits harder to access and use the difference to fund local tax cuts for higher rate payers? And these would actually be policies they voted for. Rather than things, like detention centres , that others have explicitly voted against.

ICE in the states have detention centres. It's just a place to hold illegal entrants till they can be processed and returned to their home nation.

I think he would’ve done it had he thought of it first but now needs an angle that puts Reform down and benefits his own party.

Tbh I think Restore make Reform look like a barn dance - they would reinforce the death penalty and widespread willy nilly gun ownership which I can’t stress ENOUGH would be AWFUL

Who wants guns and the death penalty?!
I assume Restore as I've watched most Reform rallies and never seen or heard mention of that. Nigel ruled out the death penalty return a long time ago.
Tbh I've never heard anything about Restore policies.

They have to go somewhere, usually it’s areas which is cheapest so they go to deprived areas. I think it’s reasonable really, it’ll be a more welcoming environment for them to go to a place that voted green.

Well you know full well that Reform’s approach won’t be welcoming at all - it will be people being dragged off the streets by ICE type agents, detention centres and then mass deportations including women and children returned to the likes of the Taliban, which Reform have already said they’ll do. That may well make you happy and be exactly what you want to see on our streets, outside our schools, in our hospitals, etc. exactly as we’ve seen play out in the USA. And perhaps you’ll also welcome the Trump playbook in our politics, until it happens to focus on you or someone you care about it.

Regardless of your opinions on immigration or the Greens (which I’m not), you also have recognise that with this type of policy you’re also welcoming political leaders to campaign on the basis of threats and political blackmail targeting those who don’t vote in line with them. As I said to a pp, perhaps that’s a price you’re personally willing to pay, but many others value our democracy.

Restore are Reform on steroids. They’re MAGA, basically. Death penalty, gun ownership, no health and safety, deregulation of everything.

Farage has previously referred to the gun laws brought in after Dunblane as ‘ludicrous’ and a ‘knee-jerk reaction’ so at some point he wanted gun laws relaxed.

Would you be ok with migrants roaming free in Green areas if you lived a couple of miles away in a Reform area? Would you be confident they would stay in the Green area.
What happens if my area votes Green but I don't?

Snazzysausage · 04/05/2026 20:04

@Walkyrie
Oh god that's nuts.
I vote Reform so haven't even considered looking at Restore.

ICE in the states, the organisation infamous for murdering 3 innocent civilians on the street. Terrible blueprint for Britain.

That’s a disgusting comparison to make and totally underplays how terrible the concentration camps were.

Nope. Sorry but they’re building detention centres to lock up minorities. It’s exactly what I said it was.

Agree, he’s a snake and I wouldn’t vote for him in a million years. But I wouldn’t vote for Polanski in a billion.

This is me

I don't trust Farage or the whole structure of that party - I'm not saying everyone's in on it, but I think they do not have the best interests of the electorate at heart

The same goes for Polanski. It's very depressing that we got here.

Do you mean you think I'm going to be locked up? Along with all the ethnic minorities in the UK?

Yes. As long as it's done legally. As in evidence of illegal entry/no legal residence rights. With due process.

Labour is looking like a very very good option at the moment compared to Greens and Reform.
