To think there will be many more disabled adults in 20 years?

Walkyrie · 03/05/2026 22:04

I’m disabled myself, just to put that out there.

It just seems like the number of people with a disability, usually a psychiatric one, is going through the roof.

40% of disability benefit claimants are claiming for mental health related reasons. The number of anxious children and teens on here, and that I know in my own life and family, is really really high. So many schools refusers and kids in need of extra support, special school placements and so on. It seems there are a lot of unemployed young adults living at home who simply don’t have the mental acuity to get a job, live independently, have a life of their own.

3 children in my family are currently school refusing, one we only found out about today but it was not a surprise as she’s always been very anxious and has selective mutism.

My AIBU is, should we be doing something to prepare for what may be a very high number of adults not working in years to come? How will we sustain them all?

I became disabled overnight. Literally. I was 55, working, reasonably fit, very healthy low carb diet, been working & contributing for decades, never been out of work or claimed any benefits (well except those standard child benefit). I had a stroke & I'm unable to work (I'm barely able to look after myself & get through the day). I qualify for a little pip & a little esa.

I'm using the money I had planned to supplement my state pension with (personal & complicated reasons why I couldn't put it in a pension plan, which ironically would have meant I would qualify for other benefits now)

I'm terribly sorry that you begrudge me that, little but if help now, but do keep in mind this could be you tomorrow.

Really sorry to hear this. This is the thing, sadly no one ever knows what's around the corner and I bet the benefit/disability bashers would soon change their tune if it happened to them.

It's based on needs and not diagnosis

Yes, I know, didn't think I'd implied that it wasn't?

Thank you.

No, no one knows what's around the corner & yes I'm sure they would.

Diet, environment, ivf and ever earlier intervention with premature births. I think all these are factors. Also biology teaches you that an egg is very selective in which sperm it allows in to fertilise it. Surely made up embryos are not in the resulting foetus' best interest?

The definition of 'disabled' needs to be clarified. A person with mild ADHD is not disabled. A person with eg. mobility issues due to arthritis, is. A person who doesn't want to leave their house is not disabled. A person with MND, is.

People don't like it but I'm sorry get used to it, and get used to it because in future, governments will have no choice but to go down that path.

Can you define what you think is considered "mild ADHD" ?!

I scored 9/9 for inattentiveness and 6/9 for hyperactivity at my assessment. So personally I'd say that's more into the severe category......? 🤔

Alos on top of that I have severw depression and anxiety which I've experience since I was bullied from aged 11 Which led to my first suicide attempt and self harming at aged 12. With further multiple suicide attempts (the last of which left me with medical PTSD-not sure if you've ever experienced dying and being resuscitated (with a 17% of survival) but it's not a fun experience....oh and that last particular attempt also cost me my job and left me too unwell to work for the following 3 1/2 years (confirmed by and NHS psychiatrist/multi disciplinary community mental health team) oh...and the DWP who without needing an appeal automatically put me in the support group of ESA due to the literal risk to my life. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Somehow I have loved to almost 40, so that 29 years of being mentally ill. nd I've been medicated with every medication under the sun (quite literally as I was initially misdiagnosed and medicated for goddamn bipolar disorder for 12 of these years on the max dose of 2 different anti psychotics during that period)

I did thankfully after 3 1/2 year of actual treatment and support return to work, though sadly only part time (have tried multiple times to get back to fully own hours but everytime has led to a mental breakdown and sick leave and my last occ health assessment strongly recommended I can only work part time hours with adjustments).

But no. That's not in any way, shape or form disabling is
it? 🤔

I’ve had a chronic physical illness all my life that comes with depression/anxiety and brain fog and chronic fatigue. I’ve always continued working despite this.

I’ve always loved working but what makes it so miserable is having toxic coworkers or a toxic boss.

People you work with can make or break a job(if you have to work in close quarters or on a team)

Especially for someone already struggling in the first place. I don’t know the solution for this widespread problem.

Yes I’ve always wondered about the IVF outcomes

Wow. Some thoughts should stay in your head, and that was one of them

Was there a particular point to that particular helping of bile, or did you just get out of bed on the wrong side today?

Not particularly...😂

Do you think you are funny? How actually dare you. How dare you make posts like that and laugh. You're disgusting. And youre more disgusting because your wife has disabilities

Double disgusting? Wow, I'm a menace to society...

You should be thoroughly ashamed of yourself. I sincerely hope the pp you mocked after they shared such sad details of their life knows better than to give your so-called opinions any weight whatsoever.

The PP mentioned a nearly successful suicide attempt. If you think that is something to mock, then you really need a new hobby.

Two members of my family have committed suicide in the last three generations and you are mocking someone who said they tried to kill themselves. I suggest you never respond to me again. You are a very unhappy person that's clear if you think someone trying to end their life is something to mock

JollyDenimSeal · 09/05/2026 18:18

I hope no one you love ever makes a suicide attempt or succeeds. I wouldn't wish it on anyone. Keep your nasty spiteful opinion to yourself

I only had a lighthearted poke at the length of the post. I made no comment in any way, shape, or form whatsoever about her unfortunate past. I see the baying mob with pitchforks are out tonight...

Edit for spelling.

Don't bother trying to gaslight people. It won't wash

Go and pearl clutch somewhere else...

If you think I'm a baying mob. Do jog on. Typical response when you've been caught bang to rights laughing at someone who is very vulnerable

Calling a post mentioning suicide "diatribe", and also the tone that you did not believe PP has ADHD because she can post more than a few sentences online... is both disgusting and ableist.
Like I said, you should have kept that thought in your head.

Shocking that his wife has disabilities and making posts like that. You can't have ADHD because you can type. Words fail me

JollyDenimSeal · 09/05/2026 18:26

Just waiting for the words "old school" to be typed
