AIBU to be amazed my friend does all her laundry in one day?

I called over to a friend yesterday evening with my dc. She was just coming down the stairs with an empty laundry basket when she answered the door.
she took a few minutes to answer the door so as she opened the door, she apologised and said she was putting away the laundry.
I jokingly said oh no bother I must put mine away, It’s been sitting there all week I need to clear the basket for the next lot.
she then proceeded to tell me she does ALL her laundry on a Saturday- washes, dries, irons and puts away! IN ONE DAY! I nearly fell to the floor. She said she had two and a half loads.
I was even more baffled because she couldn’t have us round until 7ish because she had a crazy busy day. Her dd had training, her ds had a friend over for a playdate, her dd then had an appointment in the afternoon. Then she had to collect her dh from the train station. My mind is blown! She fits her laundry in between doing all of this…and she irons! 😅 where am I going wrong?

You must not have kids!! 😆

Yes I have 2 🤣

DeftGoldHedgehog · 03/05/2026 09:38

I can do mine in one day but usually over two. 4-6 loads. For smaller loads I use the one hour setting, for larger, up to 9kg loads, I use the two hour setting. Using it according to the machine manual.

Well she is totally mad IMO because she is presumably using her dryer a lot which is costing a small fortune

this time of year I hang out everything. Yes that means some days are unsuitable but most are. Other stuff gets hung up in the airing cupboard. I’ve got a dryer and used it twice this year so far.

she is spending all day doing a rather tedious chore. Far more normal to spend a bit of time sporting it out throughout the week than basically devote a whole day off to it when you could be doing something more interesting instead

eta 2.5 loads is not very much. I can wash and dry that when weather is good. Most of us deal with far more!

Edited

No she isn’t. Putting a load on takes maybe 2 minutes. Putting it into the dryer the same. Hanging up to dry 5 mins. Folding from the dryer 3 mins, taking off line 3 mins. Ironing 15 mins = 22 mins if using a dryer, 25 if not. X 3 loads is 66 mins or 75 mins. Not all day.

dailyconniptions · 03/05/2026 09:38

Awful using the tumble dryer all the time like that though. Also really bad to do half a load. Much better environmentally to do full loads and dry outside.

I can understand people being organised enough to put clothes away straight away, and maybe doing the ironing straight off the bat. She must use her tumble dryer a lot which isn’t very green.

Only 2.5 loads for a family of 4 though?! I do a load a day usually and then hang it on the airer.

Well once a week at most I imagine. Is that lots?

To leave the house at 7, you'd have to be putting on your washing at 5 am surely?

We're in a semi so I would never put the machine on that early.

I normally try to do a couple of loads the night before if the forecast is good. There is nothing nicer than putting the washing out at the crack of dawn in summer. All quiet outside except the birds singing and sometimes the foxes milling around.
I love that part of the day.

Who remembers the poster many moons ago that used to have clean sheets every day?

I worked with a girl that did this years ago as her boyfriend preferred it. I hope she eventually came to her senses.

I put mine on the line in the morning too - I check the weather forecast the evening before, put a load on around 8pm, put it in the basket damp before bed and put it out first thing.

2.5 loads is wild. I could fill a machine from a week of underwear for 4 people, it's a lot of socks and pants!

I can't imagine not having my drier though, hate washing hanging all over the place.

Laundry is literally the easiest domestic task there is, it takes minutes to sort and put the machine on. It's not rocket surgery.

I don't agree. Laundry is a massive fucking ball ache and takes ages.

We are a family of five and all of us do sports four nights out of seven, so the washing is endless. Gym kits, karate gi, football kits, netball kits, cycling gear, plus PE kits, plus all the usual laundry, means I have to do a load a day. I don't have a tumble dryer, so hanging it all out takes ages - in particular all the fiddly underwear and socks, cycling gloves, shin pad sleeves, running belts. Such a faff. Then once it's dry, folding it all up and putting it away so you can hang out the next lot.

Sticking it in the machine and hitting the 'on' button is only about 10% of the overall job.

Not if you have a heat pump. The modern ones are very energy efficient. Mine is cheaper than running those electric hanging dryers and a dehumidifier.

I do similar once a month as it's just me alone these days.

I have three loads a month to do (clothes, towels, bedding) and have colour coded baskets for each. They all tend to fill on the same day so I get them all washed and dried in one go and then put it away so I don't need to think about it for another month. You just need to start first thing and set timers to remind you something's done, and motivate yourself to do it immediately otherwise you run out of time.

I don't buy anything that would need ironing though. I can see how a family could easily do the same with once a week.

No way can you have three loads a month! I live alone , bedding and towels there’s two there straight off every week.

Morepositivemum · 03/05/2026 09:40

I think it all depends on so many factors- you can’t line dry most of the time if you’re working 4/5 days a week, I put it out before work but mostly it’ll be wet again/ not have dried due to a shower over the day, how many kids, how messy they are, how sporty, and how many clothes they have (eg you only have limited clothes you have to wash and rewash whereas my db (pre kids), used to have enough clothes for the week to put all the shirts in on a Friday evening)

ThatCyanCat · 03/05/2026 09:41

2.5 loads in a day with ironing isn't impressive. Having only 2.5 loads created throughout the week with a family is. How?

WorkCleanRepeat · 03/05/2026 09:41

I do 2 loads most days. Where on earth am I going wrong?

Itsnotallaboutyoulikeyouthink · 03/05/2026 09:42

Yes everything at the weekend. Maybe one wash in week if needed.

Ncisdouble · 03/05/2026 09:42

Do some of you have small 5kg washing mashines or something?
Absolutely mindboggling amounts of washing in some households

sittingonabeach · 03/05/2026 09:42

Also don’t people have clothes that need washing at different temperatures, delicate cycle (detergent) etc

Kitchenbattle · 03/05/2026 09:43

sunflowersandsunsets · 03/05/2026 09:36

That’s crazy - even a standard wash on our machine is only 59 minutes. What on earth is taking two hours? No wonder basic laundry seems to take some people forever 🫣

The shortest cycle on mine is 20mins for a 3kg. The 10kg wash takes an hour and half ant 40degrees and 2hrs at 60degrees. That’s an AEG A rated machine.

I buy very little that needs different settings to be honest, I do that on purpose. Too much faff.

Foughties · 03/05/2026 08:56

2.5 loads a week!!! If only!!!

When I was single without children I did one load a week - one. Twice a month I did sheets etc

To be fair putting on a load 5 minutes. Pegging it out 10 minutes. Folding away 15 minutes (or less if you tumble dry).

lottiegarbanzo · 03/05/2026 09:45

Huh? We do ours over the weekend so it’s dry, away and ready for the next week. Essential for school uniform. Admittedly we barely iron. Normal, surely?

Thunderdcc · 03/05/2026 09:45

It depends how old your kids are too. When mine were toddlers their clothes were a) tiny and b) just got chucked in all together because they didn't matter.

Now DD is the same height as me and wearing Hollister clothes that need to go on a delicate cycle so they don't shrink and I definitely can't put the pale pink top in with the dark blue jeans ...

Plus the primary school bright red cardigans are a liability 😅

Doing it for others. When my children were 11 they were responsible for their own washing (eg putting it in the machine) and helping to peg it out. And helping to fold it away.

sittingonabeach · 03/05/2026 09:47

If you read your washing machine instructions most of the cycles actually shouldn’t be done at maximum load of machine. I was surprised when I looked at the instructions for our last washing machine which has a large drum. Like most people I probably ignore that, unless using 15 minute cycle (which I am sure for most machines is not meant to be used for a full load of laundry)
