AIBU to be amazed my friend does all her laundry in one day?

I called over to a friend yesterday evening with my dc. She was just coming down the stairs with an empty laundry basket when she answered the door.
she took a few minutes to answer the door so as she opened the door, she apologised and said she was putting away the laundry.
I jokingly said oh no bother I must put mine away, It’s been sitting there all week I need to clear the basket for the next lot.
she then proceeded to tell me she does ALL her laundry on a Saturday- washes, dries, irons and puts away! IN ONE DAY! I nearly fell to the floor. She said she had two and a half loads.
I was even more baffled because she couldn’t have us round until 7ish because she had a crazy busy day. Her dd had training, her ds had a friend over for a playdate, her dd then had an appointment in the afternoon. Then she had to collect her dh from the train station. My mind is blown! She fits her laundry in between doing all of this…and she irons! 😅 where am I going wrong?

Also to add I suspect people who are doing lesser loads per week are probably overloading their machines. It should be at a maximum 3/4 full. Any more than that you’re putting too much load on it and your clothes arent getting washed properly

Sorry, is this daily washing? I'm getting that from the 1 x sox and pants. It sounds like you're washing everything you use every day. Have I read that right? If so, you don't need to wash bedding, towels, and jeans after once use. More like once a week. And most people save up their smalls and tops and wash them when they have a full load. It's not a case of just washing everything you used yesterday, today.

Sorry if I read it wrong!

Yes you read it wrong. That's the loads of washing she does each week (ie one wash for everyone's pants & socks)

Who doesn't use towels for a week??? You wash towels every day?? I do replace hand towels every three days. But are you saying that your towels are basically single-use???

Not at all - we are very much a house where towels get used for a week or more and dried on radiators or towel rails between use. But there are people on this thread who are doing a whole load every week of JUST towels, so they can't be using them all week. Unless they have a teeny tiny machine which only fits 4 towels into it.

caringcarer · Today 13:52

I wash 2 loads of washing most days. I put 1 load of washing and drying on overnight to use the 3.4p kwh.

FoxRedPuppy · Today 13:52

I’ve never washed my running belt! And muddy cycling gives would get dried and dusted down- they are just going to get muddy again!

Swimwear shouldn’t be washed each time, it breaks down the fabric. Just rinse.

And Beaver uniforms are only work for a few hours so don’t need washing every week!

caringcarer · Today 13:53

I wash bedding and towels at weekends on a hotter wash. Midweek it's 1 or 2 loads per day of clothing.

FoxRedPuppy · Today 13:53

And yes I meant to write darked on (damn autocorrect!)

Ive always hung washing out over night. Sometimes if it rains I just leave it until it is dry again 😂.

I belive one of the top 3 are dishwashers as well. Fridges are top 6? If I remember top 10 correctly

we weren't talking about dishwashers though. I don't have (or want) one, but I wouldn't set it to run when I was out if I did.

Fridges (when age, location are taken into
account) are not that high on the list. It looks high when very old ones or those in bad locations (sheds, under stairs etc) are included.

And that’s awesome.

And that’s you.

Someone else does like throwing in their cycling gear for a wash.

It’s like people really struggle with comprehending that people have different preferences.

I dont understand why people don’t put washing away. I clean and dry it and put it away. It’s doesn’t hang about anywhere. What’s with that?

NoMoreSocks · Today 13:58

But you don't need to launder swimsuits after one use! Just make the swimmer rinse their suits in cold water to get the chlorine out, since it eats fabric! Then put all the swimsuits in a wash with other things once a week.

It’s all the towels and he only has two pairs of jammers plus racing ones as they cost a fortune so they need to be cleaned more frequently. Most of the training is mornings and it’s a tight turnaround to get back and eat before school.

Whatwouldnanado · Today 14:04

It’s not as though she has to haul down to the river and bash it on stones! Around three loads of coloured stuff and a load of whites each week here. Each wash takes 30 mins then whatever in the dryer or out on the rack in the garden. My only ironing is half a dozen shirts for dh and a couple of other bits for dds. Hang it up/put away immediately it’s dry. Usually get it done on Sat afternoon within a few hours. Loads of time to do other stuff.

A family of 4, washing clothes, bedding, towels etc frequently enough to be clean is more than 2 loads of washing a week, so not to my standard you're not. If you have lower standards, that's your choice, but don't pretend it's the same thing.

Bedding doesn’t need to be washed weekly when you shower/bathe every day. I do 1set per week in those two loads. The odd time I’ll do a second set depending on the time of the month (I get a bit sweaty)

The stats I can find now all lump washing machines and dryers together.

The information I'd seen reported had tumble driers as highest/high risk but then washing machines, dishwashers, fridges and freezers all at the same level of risk.

Ovens and microwaves were the lowest risk.

We're crossing posts 🤣🤣

personally wouldn't leave washing machine, dishwasher, tumble dryer, on when
I go out

Air Fryer, sage coffee machine & (old!!) oven get turned off at the wall after use. When the kitchen gets re done the new oven won't get turned off at the wall)

friddge/freezer was new in 2020 & stands in the kitchen in a well ventilated position & isn't over loaded so (fortunately) a risk I'm happy taking.

kettle, tv, everything else are plugged in & on at the wall but not actively 'on' when I'm out.

think that covers everything 🤣🤣

Thank you - exactly . If your standards are lower and you don’t mind your kids going into school in used clothes and sleeping in a bed that hasn’t been changed in a fortnight, then all power to you! You probably have plenty of spare time as a result. But at least own it - hold up your hands and say ‘we don’t go in for a lot of laundry here’. Don’t pretend that everyone in your house is just as clean as in a household that runs a wash every day.

Edited

It's an anathema to me too. My DC were putting away their clean laundry when they were about 8/9 ish. What's the point of clean clothes that aren't in people's bedrooms ready to be used again?

That's your opinion. I shower daily, twice often in the summer. I still wash my bedding at least once a week, often twice a week in the summer.

but even bedding aside 2 loads for a family of 4 means you have different standards to me, and that's ok for your family.

as is me doing washing in the week & not finding it beyond my ability to peg out a load of washing as well as making lunches & getting children ready for school & to school.

Other posters have different
standards/concerns too & that's what works for them. its akways a bit of a pointless conversation because family sizes/sports/messiness varies so much.

but its always still interesting to hear other people's 'norms' 🌷

Rocket surgery is a well known deliberate mixed metaphor. It's been used on the interwebs for years

First time I've seen that anywhere, but I did realise it was purposeful, and earmarked it for future usage. If I don't forget it.

Your teenagers each have a king-size bed? Blimey, talk about spoilt! They'll get a shock when they go to uni and have what most young unmarried people have - a single!

Wow, that’s really rude. You have no idea about our circumstances and needs. My kids will be absolutely fine at university and beyond, thanks very much.

It did sound like that from the post! I use unscented Ecover or Surcare on pants but nice smelling detergent and conditioner on clothes

Well, that's good to hear!! 😂

@likeafishneedsabike

what if she used the time she’d have spent washing to exercise to keep well for her family? Would that be ok by you?

PurplishGemstones · Today 14:29

Well, they might do! And I can just imagine all the critters that come out at night having a high old time playing with the laundry!

I once folded away a wasp in my knickers. Fortunately for me (not so much for the wasp) it was barely alive when I put them on, and it delivered a very weak sting. Not even a sting really. More a tiny prick.

MammaPenny · Today 14:29

If I didn’t put my washing machine on at least once a day my laundry would start climbing the walls 😭😂

I do 2 loads most days. Where on earth am I going wrong?

Washing towels and bed linen a lot more frequently than I do, probably.

I remember on previous threads people seemed to use a towel once and then wash it. I don't have a set schedule for linen, I just go "Oh dear that probably needs washing" and then wash it.

My dc don’t go to school in unclean clothes though… there’s a huge difference between used and unclean!
