AIBU to be amazed my friend does all her laundry in one day?

I called over to a friend yesterday evening with my dc. She was just coming down the stairs with an empty laundry basket when she answered the door.
she took a few minutes to answer the door so as she opened the door, she apologised and said she was putting away the laundry.
I jokingly said oh no bother I must put mine away, It’s been sitting there all week I need to clear the basket for the next lot.
she then proceeded to tell me she does ALL her laundry on a Saturday- washes, dries, irons and puts away! IN ONE DAY! I nearly fell to the floor. She said she had two and a half loads.
I was even more baffled because she couldn’t have us round until 7ish because she had a crazy busy day. Her dd had training, her ds had a friend over for a playdate, her dd then had an appointment in the afternoon. Then she had to collect her dh from the train station. My mind is blown! She fits her laundry in between doing all of this…and she irons! 😅 where am I going wrong?

so it’s 20 mins, 90 mins and then all other settings are more than 90 mins? No wonder you don’t put a wash on before work

Yep 🤣

And that’s awesome.

And that’s you.

Someone else does like throwing in their cycling gear for a wash.

It’s like people really struggle with comprehending that people have different preferences.

It's not just about difference preferences, though. It's also about the planet. The amount of water and electricity used by those who are doing 14-15 loads a week, especially if tumble drying...🙈

Some people should think a little less about obsessive cleanliness and a little more about their descendants' futures! And some dirt is GOOD for you!

Do I really though? I don’t think I’ve posted it for ages, and never on random unrelated posts tbf…I don’t see your comment as funny tbh.

Oooh, is it a really good kitchen? Can I see? I love nice kitchens.

clearlyy · 03/05/2026 17:34

I’d love to have my washing done in one day. I don’t have a dryer so I’ve gotta wait two days for it to be all dry.

How many people in your home @ForCosyLion
how many children do you have?

What's that got to do with the price of fish? My circs don't change the planetary aspect!

ForCosyLion · 03/05/2026 13:18

FIFTEEN! I appreciate there are five of you, but that's an average of three loads per person per week. I am a single person and there's no way I do three loads per week.

Ok so you live alone
have you ever had children? Sporty?

do you exercise?

because it’s cool that you do one load a week but…. Well, you are coming at it from the perspective of someone who lives alone, obviously doesn’t strenuously regularly exercise and perhaps has never been responsible for children’s laundry

Thank you - exactly . If your standards are lower and you don’t mind your kids going into school in used clothes and sleeping in a bed that hasn’t been changed in a fortnight, then all power to you! You probably have plenty of spare time as a result. But at least own it - hold up your hands and say ‘we don’t go in for a lot of laundry here’. Don’t pretend that everyone in your house is just as clean as in a household that runs a wash every day.

But some germs are good for your immune system. Obsessive cleanliness isn't giving your immune system a chance to "exercise" and be strong.

That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it. 🤭

You're right.

Stop their sports, save the planet! 🤣

So….
no children
never had children
certainly never had a rugby playing teen!
and you live alone
and obviously don’t strenuously exercise regularly to build up a sweat

fair enough - think most of us could get away with a much less loads in your shoes!

I am so busted!

Does your machine really have a setting for soft toys? That is so cute! What's it called? "Spa Day"?

P.S. I go through phases where I strenuously exercise. It's still just a top. Wash the bottoms maybe every 2-3 goes.

BauhausOfEliott · 03/05/2026 17:47

Your ‘mind is blown’ and you ‘nearly fell over’ because someone does their laundry slightly differently to you?

I can’t even imagine being interested in someone else’s laundry, let alone flabbergasted by it.

“Soft toys”

good for you for accepting that perhaps you might be coming at this from a very very different place to many of the rest of us

For posters using the short cycles are you only doing small loads?

Yes the fast loads are for small oh shit I need that now washing loads.

With cleanliness, never is the phrase "don't let perfection be the enemy of good" more true. I'm very good with dishcloths, food hygiene, wiping surfaces, keeping organised and reasonably clean food storage, and am particularly careful around meat and fish. Washing bed linen, clothes and towels? Not so much. They get washed when they need it. Yes I am on the slovenly side about it. Washing myself? Having the odd day without showering seems to best suit my skin. On the whole people are a bit too clean IMO and use a lot of chemicals that probably aren't doing us much good.

Yes, dermatologists say that every three days is sufficient, unless you're doing sports. You can always wash your underarms at the sink every day.

As a society, we are way too clean, imo. Forty-minute showers, daily showers, single-use towels and pyjamas....it's all barking mad. Poor planet.

Tableforjoan · 03/05/2026 17:55

I don’t own a tumble dryer if that helps cheer up those who hate the fact I do 14 plus machine loads a week.

ccccccccc · 03/05/2026 17:56

I usually only do three loads a week and have a dryer and a dehumidifier so it would be easy for me to do the lot in one day - there are just two of us at home now. I certainly could never have done this when I had my DC at home - and I've never done much ironing anyway.

This sounds perfectly reasonable to me. I certainly don't do all the bedding every week, I have covers and pillowcases on the pillows, and a flat sheet under the duvet (which is in a cover) - no need to wash everything constantly.

JJMama · 03/05/2026 18:34

Getting my eco credits in 😅 We also don’t fly anywhere 😇 and we grow fruit and veg. Just to rub my own halo some more 🤣🤣

She is very typical of an organized working outside the home mother. You fit laundry and many errands around other activities. I sort it, then do sequential washes and drying while doing other activities. Load the wash, do something else, finish that, then load the dryer/hang laundry after putting in another load.
