It looks weird and it makes me feel uncomfortable when I open the app, there was a giant cardboard one in store as well. Can someone tell me when they’ve all gone and I’ll think about coming back!

I feel bad for the guy. He looks so happy as well. He just wants to be loved, he can't help how he looks. Poor fruit and veg guy

He's putting on a brave face! It must be hard carrying around all the fruit and veg. 😉

I like it! It made me smile when I opened the Tesco app. I also like anything that makes fruit and veg look fun and appealing 🥦 🍊 🍅 🥬 🫐

FlatErica · 03/05/2026 08:12

So that’s what it is! I thought it was a boil covered monster too.

You're not wrong OP - I watched the TV advert and thought it was both stupid and weird 😂 Not a fan here.

Can we also add in the blue hairy family on the British Gas advert as being stupid, annoying, and so not 'cute' ?

Agree about both the fruit monster and the furry blue gas family - if we're dispensing with animated characters, can we please also get rid of this LNER character (apparently called 'Eleanor' = LNER, geddit?). The character/advert tries to appeal to just about every demographic, and ends up just annoying all of them 😩

Quite agree. The ad is awful. There's a huge cardboard one in the Tesco in our nearest market town too. Fortunately I don't get there very often!

Yesreallyitsme · 03/05/2026 08:18

Honestly, I like him.

It makes me think of a huge pile of the food Tesco wastes every day. Also, it's fat?! Shouldn't it be healthier and cleverer looking, to promote healthier eating? Or is it more accessible to the British public to appear this way :-/

It also makes me think of bruised fruit. And profligate waste. Is it just a tax dodge from Tesco, handing out a few tangerines to the poors instead of addressing the rapid rise on food costs and wages of their higher ups?

How is that a tax dodge? There either is a cost of donating or there isn’t?

cariadlet · 03/05/2026 08:25

I hate the TV advert and thought that was bad enough. Luckily, I don't have the app and my dp does the supermarket shop so I haven't seen it anywhere else.

I find it really irritating when corporations go on about these type of things. So you're providing some (enough?) fruit and veg for 500 schools. Do it for every school with your £billion profits and stop promoting junk at the same time. Twats.

So if you can’t help every school you shouldn’t help any? What a weird attitude. Tesco are not the government.

Hello Tesco/Creative Agency that worked with Tesco! 👋

He looks like he is made from rotting decaying fruit and vegetables.😂

Think I got the fruits that have fallen off yesterday, teasco sent me moldy apples and bananas.

I'm with you op its very off putting.

McCoysCheese · 03/05/2026 08:35

Thanks for the support! I’ll head to Aldi for the foreseeable I think although it’s a pain not to get deliveries.

If it gets kids eating fruit and veg then so what?

MarmaladeSandwich7 · 03/05/2026 08:36

It’s awful!!

Davros · 03/05/2026 08:36

I saw the TV ad which strangely had a sign language person in the corner, I’ve never seen that for an advert but generally avoid them. I like the fruit and veg monster but intensely disliked the kid who befriended him

Why is the tv advert so bad? I thought it was quite fun.

She is annoying I agree.

Hecatee · 03/05/2026 08:38

Oh hell no! That’s hideous and sets something off in me.
On the same level as the chewing gum advert where people have mouths in their foreheads. I can’t look at it.

how do these things get signed off?

flagpolesitta · 03/05/2026 08:39

Omg yes I was shuddering at the big cardboard one in my local Tesco yesterday, makes me feel ill

Imisscoffee2021 · 03/05/2026 08:40

Ugh. I hadn't seen this but I hate it.

If it gets kids eating fruit and veg then so what?

You really think this is going to encourage even a single child to eat a piece of fruit or vegetable?

TJNutbrook · 03/05/2026 08:44

ThatLemonBear · 03/05/2026 05:58

Agreed, a marketing fail on Tesco’s part IMO, the TV ad for it is awful!

Are you talking about the one where a boy eats a grape and gets chased out of the store and cornered by the monster? I thought it was dreadful and thought it would be scary for kids.

moose62 · 03/05/2026 06:22

I saw the advert and immediately had to switch it off. I suffer from trypophobia and it made me itch all over!

My DD has trypophobia too and had to leave the store and sit in the car when she saw the cardboard one at the store entrance. Really bad advertising campaign

Agapornis · 03/05/2026 08:46

It's no Arcimboldo. The shade of yellow feels wrong and vom-like, there aren't that many fruit or veg in that shade.

Note that they don't actually provide fruit & veg direct to schools. They only have a grants scheme where schools can apply for an average of £1k to spend on f&v (Customers vote on whether they'll get £500, £1,000 or £1,500). So they give an average of £83.33 a month to a self-selecting schools that have time to apply for a grant. The outcome of the application won't be given until 12-18 months later. If successful, they then need to file a report before they can apply a second time, so there could be 3-4 years between first applying for a grant, and getting a second one. If they only get £500 that's £1000 over 4 years, or £20.83 a month. I don't think it's worth all that hassle.
https://www.tescoplc.com/fruit-and-veg-grants (I work in grants and wouldn't put much effort in this application, it's quicker to just run a community fundraiser)
