AIBU to be baffled a mum had no idea the school fayre was happening?

xAwaywiththefairiesx · 01/05/2026 19:40

Today my daughter's primary school had a spring fayre after school on the school field. Ice cream van, face-painting, various stalls with games, the usual. All arranged by the PTA to raise money for the school.
There was a mufti day today, and the children were asked to bring a donation to the school as an exchange for the mufti, something like cakes to sell or a teddy for the tombola or a bottle of wine as a prize or something.
One mum wanders onto the field after school, with both of her kids in mufti, looking around bewildered saying "What's this? Is this a new thing they're doing? Will it be every week?"

And this is so weird to me because the spring fayre has been organised for months. We have lots of emails asking for donations, several more asking for volunteers, we've had at least three leaflets home about it, and she obviously got the memo about mufti, the whole point in which was for the school fayre!

My phone own child has been banging on about it for three weeks.

How can she get so unaware? I'm not judging, honestly, I'm just baffled how it got past her.

Is it just me? Could you miss something like this after all that communication?

It is a non word and you are being ‘wilfully ignorant’. You seem almost offended that I didn’t know what it meant 😂

”How one is meant to know that a word in their standard vocabulary as well as that of their friends, family and official school communications is uncommon I don't know.”

Sorry but that last paragraph makes no sense… should I google it to find out what you mean? Lol. Think you’ll find what you’re say is they are being wilfully ignorant

Edited

It's not a non-word. It means a Muslim scholar. And came to mean dressing out of uniform because British soldiers in non-uniform in India often dressed like mufti. The expanded use of it to mean any dressing out of uniform means it has a second definition from its original one. That doesn't make it a non-word.

You seem very het up that for lots of people it is a perfectly normal and commonly understood word and so much so that they assumed it was universally so. That was the meaning of my second paragraph quoted. If you use a word regularly, and your friends do, and the school uses it for all instances of non-uniform days amd it was used when you were at school then how are you meant to know it isn't universally understood?

Yes Muslim scholar. Not fucking non uniform for school kids LOL. And you seem very het up that a lot of people don’t know what it means.

Again, like I said, just because someone uses that word all the time with friends/ family school, don’t you think it’s ’wilful ignorance’ (as you put it) to assume everyone else in the bloody country should associate the word ‘mufti’ with non uniform. Like I said, I associated it more with the slang term for female genitalia! 🤣

Zazazoolly · Today 00:03

how do you get mufti out of non uniform day?

This is what I’d like to know. But according to the poster above, it’s wilful ignorance not to know what it means apparently

Mums have a lot on their minds. Lots of school emails, work stuff. Busy lives. So easy to forget a school event.

But why would I not assume everyone else knows it??!! Do you question if everyone knows every single word in your vocabulary?

I have never heard it called anything else!!!

As I have repeatedly explained, it is just as much of a surprise to me to hear it not called mufti as it is for the people hearing it called mufti!

It's been mufti my entire 39 years of life. Every school in my town calls it mufti. My parents, my grandparents, my friends, literally everyone I know calls it mufti.

Maybe it's "not a word" maybe it's "slang" none of that makes a blind bit of difference to the fact that I have have never once known it by any other word.

So why on Earth would I assume anything else?

I do not understand why you are like a dog with a bone about this. I thought it was universal. Now I know it's not. Let it go FFS. It's so bizarre.

I’m not a dog with a bone. Someone quoted me and decided to argue with me about it and I keep responding to them. So maybe you should tell them to let it go instead of accusing those who didn’t know what it meant of ‘wilful ignorance’.

And I’m from a region where we use a lot of slag words. I know these are regional slang words and do realise people from other regions wouldn’t have a clue what I’m talking about despite me using them every day with my own friends/ family for the entire 48 years of my life. Because I’m aware they are slang words. Again, I’m not sure how the word mufti has come to be associated with non uniform day for school kids and it seems quite obvious to me it’s a regional term.

Have you never used a word or a phrase you've used all your life around other people and got blank looks? Because I have. Tonnes of times.
You ever brought up a family tradition you thought everyone did only to find that was just your parents?
Eaten something a certain way only for someone to look at you curiously and ask why you eat it that way and not their way?

Are you aware there are currently about 50 different names for bread rolls in the UK and everyone always insists their's in the correct one?
You've never made a wrong assumption ever in your life???

As the OP says, let it go. It's irrelevant, boring and serves no purpose other than to pick holes in the OP's post.

Givemeachaitealatte · Today 00:43

You have no idea what's happening in people's lives. School Comms are relentless, expectation for money, donations etc. - I lose every letter I'm given, my children have to remind me of non uniform days unless I add them in my diary right away, which sometimes I forget.

A spring fayre would probably be so low down in my quite frankly huge mental list, I would have forgotten too. I am a single mum, with a stressful full time job, I'm very appreciative of PTAs and anyone who volunteers their time but this wouldn't even register unless my children were desperate to go and reminded my relentlessly.

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · Today 03:31

I find the term Mufti..Absolutely hilarious and very dated. Can't believe it has been resurrected and is still being used.

Who came up with this term. Some child's grand parents. Or one of those silly,,leading edge, trend sending PR Agencies usually London based.

Who organise Work Events for people wanting to take their children and animals to work for the day.and have them in their work space.

I have not made this up..A friends brother owns abd runs one of these Agencies and organised two similar

Mufti belonged to the British Military over a hundred years ago when for whatever reason troops. officers etc were allowed to wear their own clothes for some event or special day.

Popular in a World War 2. And firmly belongs in Vera Lynn,White cliffs of Dover elderly mentality

How about Dress Down or No Uniform.Day instead.

More in line with modern Children?

I said it was wilful ignorance to remain unaware of the meaning when multiple people have explained it and provided links in this same thread. I very clearly said that specifically. I never said it was such to have been unaware of it until now.

I really don’t care about your opinion. And I did read that others have stated what it meant before I posted. I just thought it was daft to assume others knew what they meant. I mean who the hell says “they were in mufti”. Why not just say “they weren’t in uniform”.

Fair enough. But you are also refusing to accept that for many people mufti just is the right word. It is the only term anyone has ever used for meaning non-uniform in their life. That is what makes it not daft to make that assumption.

I think it’s ‘wilfully ignorant’ of the op to say “Non uniform day" is such a weird, boring and clunky way to say it” after she has realised than not everyone says ‘mufti’ or even knew what it meant and instead call it “non uniform day” but there you go….

Sigh. Again, I said specifically it was wilfully ignorant to refuse to read the multiple explanations provided to you on a plate. I never said it was ignorant to have not known the term in the first place. It is also not unreasonable to.assume it is a generally understood term when that's the only term you've ever heard.

You are welcome to your opinion that it is an entirely obscure and hilarious word. But it is bizarre how you insist on saying you still don't understand why it means non-uniform when it has been explained very clearly.

Er, at the point where I originally said it was wilfully ignorant! You said then that it means Muslim scholar and not non-uniform, ignoring all the explanations about how the word got from A to B.

I hope you have found the etymology interesting.
