AIBU to be devastated after losing my sentimental lucky necklace?

I have a necklace with huge sentimental value. I've worn it every day for decades, and (I appreciate this is ridiculous) have over the years credited with lucky powers.

Today I went for the salon for a treatment ahead of upcoming family event. This is a very rare occasion for me - have been maybe 3 times in my life, but wanted to give haggered self a little boost/confidence for this event.

I nearly left necklace on, but took it off at last minute and left it on top of my bundle of removed clothes in a box. These were then popped on a shelf just outside treatment room. It's a room at the back of the salon, so not a thoroughfare where other customers would be.

Once done (10 mins), got dressed, stuffed remaining clothes in bag, paid and left. Before I got the at max. 400 meters home, I realised I wasn't wearing the necklace. Once home, bag was meticulously emptied in hallway, before realising it wasn't there. Immediately, I returned to salon, checking on pavement as I did so, but assuming it had pinged off onto floor unnoticed while I was getting dressed, and I'd soon be reunited.

The staff hadn't seen it and helped me look for it. Hunted everwhere in treatment room and exit route, and no sign. Then retraced steps again, and went home to triple check bag/entrance way - no sign. My partner has since been back and had a proper look under all the furniture - staff have been super helpful.

Given there's no sign in salon, or bag, only assumption is it somehow became attached to my clothing, before falling off somewhere between salon and home. But I'm not wearing anything 'catchy' so it just feels so unlikely anything would have stayed 'caught' in the 5 mins I was dressed and paying. It's a fairly busy road so someone could have spotted it in the 10 mins it took to get home and back, but again, what are the chances :
a. it was attached to me
b. fell off not immediately but after leaving salon
c. someone saw it
d. they picked it up and pocketed it (I've posted in local groups just in case)

I cannot think that anyone working in a salon would risk their job for something like this. Far more valuable things must be left in these baskets multiple times a day. I don't suspect anyone I met there of taking it, but at a loss as to where it can be.

I'm completely devastated. It's only a necklace and worthless to anyone else, but it's irreplaceable to me and I can't believe I've lost it in this way. Worst of all, superstitious me can now all I can think of is the multiple things I want good luck for (operations, kids exams, the world, plus the family event I wanted the confidence boost for in the first place!) and I don't have my talisman!

AIBU to be this upset, and also, where's my necklace?!

I’m so sorry. Two things I’d do is first concentrate really hard and think where it would be. Check that place even if you’ve checked it before. You might be drawn to it. And secondly I know this may sound odd but you could try praying to st Anthony? I found a very sentimental thing this way (or at least, I found it coincidentally just after I asked him to help me Grin). I really hope you find it!

Are there local facebook pages for your area you can post on? People can be amazing on those. You aren't being unreasonable. I've a necklace with my late twin babies names on it. It's my prized piece of jewellary and far from my most expensive but it means the world.

Thank you for not making me feel ridiculous for being so upset. Predictably (and ridiculously) things have gone wrong over the past 24 hours which I'm attributing to my missing 'lucky' necklace.

The last place I saw it was on top of the bundle of clothes. I remember it crossing my mind i should poke it down so it wasn't sitting on top but in the split second thought it was fine, then remembered my watch was also on so took it off and threw it on top of clothes too and passed the basket out of the door.

Thank you too for the St Anthony suggestion too. I was trying to remember the saint's name, but agree it's helped in the past.

I've posted it too on the local FB page. Do people still hand things into the police? That's something else I could try, just feel it's unlikely someone found it so quickly .

You re definitely not unreasonable. I had a very lovely but simple bracelet from my mum that she used to wear as a young woman. I wore it out shopping one day two years ago and returned without it on :( it was slightly too big for me so must have just slipped off and I didn't notice. I retraced all my steps but couldn't find it. I didn't have a picture of it so couldn't post it on the local Facebook group. I was gutted and I still feel sad about it.

If the box you put your clothes into was wicker, it could have caught on the sides as you took your clothes back out…

helpfulperson · 02/05/2026 22:24

Did you have a towel or similar when you got dressed? It might have gone into the laundry.

I thought I had lost a necklace only for it to turn up 2 years later in a side pocket of my bag (I swear I looked in this pocket numerous times).

NotAnotherScarf · 02/05/2026 22:37

I hope you find it. It's devastating losing something that feels part of you. The other week I lost my Swiss army knife...I know pathetic, I've only had it a couple of years but it's so useful. Felt like id lost an arm
Eventually found it in a pocket of a jacket that I didn't think id worn for ages

Fallen on the floor and kicked under a cupboard /shelves? Once lost a necklace and when I went to the loo it was in my pants!! Must have snapped and fallen down through my clothes!

BitOutOfPractice · 02/05/2026 22:42

oh no op I feel so sad for you.

is it worth puttting a post on your town’s facebook page? I see lots of stuff being reunited with its owners like that. Just in case you dropped it outside the salon?

I truly hope you find it
