What phrases do you hate? It gives me the rage when my mum says put up and shut up. I know that some things are not within my control and that i have to do things i don't like.

For free
It's for nothing
Or it's free
It's not for free!

They’re different words. One’s the verb, the other the noun.

no they are not
its in the pronunciation

The trouble with ‘picky bits’- and I understand completely, it’s so twee — is that there isn’t really a decent alternative .
‘Nibbles’ is just as bad, IMO. ‘Starters’ might not fit the bill either, and nor might ‘snacks.’
Any suggestions?

Tab nabs.🙂

HoraceCope · 30/04/2026 19:08

picnic food
or buffet style
i never use picky bits, that is revolting.

Cosyblankets · 30/04/2026 19:10

In a shop..... are you ok? When they mean next please

Blanknotebook · 30/04/2026 19:11

When people add the word ‘gentle’ to their statements. eg. ‘A ‘gentle’ reminder.
Why do that?

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 30/04/2026 19:11

A slither of cake. It’s sliver.
Having/making a brew.

Funnywonder · 30/04/2026 19:11

No? at the end of an advisory statement. ‘You’d probably be better off leaving the gate closed then, no?’ Fucking hell, I HATE it😆

Cantbearssed · 30/04/2026 19:12

Game changer 😣

FeelingAntsy · 30/04/2026 19:23

I cannot bear UNSETTLED: "I find so and so doing something so unsettling." Makes me think of people permanently stuck on their sofas who cannot deal with any knock to their equipoise, and worse can't even identify what emotion they are experiencing.

A pedantic one: LESS for FEWER

The corporate bullshit ones make me heave too. Reaching out. Arranging a one-to-one. Fortunately I am not in this heinous world but I occasionally make the mistake of going on LinkedIn (= very unsettling).

Picoloangel · 30/04/2026 19:24

Fur baby
Hubby

PersephoneSmith · 30/04/2026 19:26

My late husband used to call petrol ‘go juice’ and bank notes ‘beer tokens’ and both used to give me rage.
of course I’d give anything to hear them again now 😢

BCBird · 30/04/2026 19:27

Pronounciation instead of pronunciation

Morepositivemum · 30/04/2026 19:28

Upfs when used about every single food!!

Deconstructed salad?
Fridge raid plate?
Buffet?
Low effort meal?
Finger food?

Unless I have totally misunderstood what picky bits are even supposed to be since it is not a phrase I have ever heard used IRL!

threeblowdries · 30/04/2026 19:30

Someone saying they are Solo parenting when their dh is only away for a night

Obviously at the start of every sentence even when it's not obvious

Sunnies for sunglasses

GinToBegin · 30/04/2026 19:33

I resonate with x. No you don’t. It resonates with you.

What is the fresh hell of the current ‘deo’ advert? Deo? Seriously? Dear lord, do marketing wonks think that people can’t cope with words of more than one syllable now?

NotAFabergeEgg · 30/04/2026 19:39

"Use your words".... when said to anyone over 5.

Woodfiresareamazing2 · 30/04/2026 19:39

Hubby. Holibobs.

Wrong use of grammar/verbs, double negatives eg I was sat; I never did nothing, I turned round and said ...

But the main one at the moment is - the ick.

Thehorticulturalhussie · 30/04/2026 19:41

FloofyKat · 30/04/2026 17:50

Needs gone
Holibobs
Hubicle
chrimbo
And so it begins
Making memories
Ickle bubba

and lots more!
Maybe I’m just a grumpy old woman ….

Are you me???

They’re different words. One’s the verb, the other the noun.

For decades that I can remember, the noun and verb were pronounced the same, with the accent on the 2nd syllable. It’s only relatively recently that it’s turned into REEsearch, for both noun and verb.

Snickerdoodlecabbagepatch · 30/04/2026 19:47

People saying 'well done' to people that didn't actually do anything well.

E.g. person A wins a competition by pure chance, like the lottery or similar.
Person B: well done A!

Arrrrrrrgh 😡

GingersOwner26 · 30/04/2026 20:00

Thingummies and all variations on that theme.

yogpot · 30/04/2026 20:07

I don’t respect anyone who says ‘hubby’, including my own mother.

Cantbearssed · 30/04/2026 20:07

Oh another one, I hate it when people refer to someone as “this one” 🤮
