What phrases do you hate? It gives me the rage when my mum says put up and shut up. I know that some things are not within my control and that i have to do things i don't like.

Home-educating, organic vegan, anti-vaxxers, clothes made entirely of tie-dyed hemp. That kind of thing.

Jeepers!!

Swiftie1878 · 06/05/2026 09:01

Slightly more serious but, anyone in a position of power (in government) or anyone reporting on them (in the media) who can’t say the word ‘nuclear’. It’s such a worrying word, and when people pronounce it ‘nucular’, I just think they have no right to be involved around it in ANY way! 😂

Gifted

Verb as opposed to adjective, presumably?

Oh I agree. It’s something I see far more often on Mumsnet than anywhere else. Does no-one give things to people any more? I know it’s not incorrect, but again on Mumsnet, people only receive gifts, never presents 😆

Flintstonerubble · 06/05/2026 11:49

I’m not a fan of hosted eg I hosted Christmas dinner last year.

awfulapril · 06/05/2026 12:03

ConnieHeart · 06/05/2026 07:57

I know, what happened to having people round, it sounds so bloody pretentious, like they live in a 7 bedroom mansion or something 😄

Exactly. I wouldn’t say it unless I had a butler and a 24 hr chef 😆

Sadly not just on MN - I regularly see it in books these days, including non-fiction like history books where the author and certainly their editor should know better!

For example the king gifted the queen a silk. No, he GAVE the silk to her!

I don’t get it. What’s the difference in pronunciation?

Toddlerandthecat · 06/05/2026 15:27

Girly..."I'm a matcha girly", "I'm a pilates girly" 🖕🏼 no issue with the matcha or pilates btw

a-DOOR-able being the standard pronunciation with that poster having head people say add-or-UBBLE I think.

Never heard the latter.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 06/05/2026 20:31

A bite to eat. Sounds so prissy.

Okay, thank you! It was hard to tell without the emphasis.

Deconstructed salad?
Fridge raid plate?
Buffet?
Low effort meal?
Finger food?

Unless I have totally misunderstood what picky bits are even supposed to be since it is not a phrase I have ever heard used IRL!

I very much like 'fridge raid plate'

dancehysterical55 · 06/05/2026 20:52

REsearch is the verb, reSEARCH the noun.

You’re right, my mistake! 🙈😂

dailyconniptions · 07/05/2026 09:21

The constant 'obsessed with...' Oh do shut the fuck up. You just like it/are fond of it. Pack in the pathetic exaggeration.

FeelingAntsy · 07/05/2026 09:50

catsandpolitics · 06/05/2026 20:45

Afterwards I was thinking what I would actually call this myself, and I think I would say 'tapas'. Which might be overselling it, but nothing like a bit of placebo.

Jackiepumpkinhead · 07/05/2026 09:54

‘I gave baby a bottle’, ‘I put baby to bed’. So annoying!

Wishineversmoked · 07/05/2026 10:06

I was gifted 😡😡 and picky bits

DoraSpenlow · 07/05/2026 10:37

The, frankly, infantile response of "It sounds like you don't like them very much", or "You obviously don't like them very much" when someone of here complains about something a friend or relative has done. Any grown up knows that it is perfectly normal to love the bones of someone but sometimes find things they do annoying or irritating. (Yes, and or course, sometimes you really don't like them, I get it).

Springinmysteps · 07/05/2026 12:51

If someone is looking for eg. a new coat and they state they are "after a new coat"
