What phrases do you hate? It gives me the rage when my mum says put up and shut up. I know that some things are not within my control and that i have to do things i don't like.

It is what it is.
You do you.
Not your circus, not your monkeys. (Who thinks up these daft expressions?)
Early doors.

SnobblyBobbly · 01/05/2026 19:30

When work people talk about having different ‘hats’ on.

Don’t know why, but it makes me cringe!

SnobblyBobbly · 01/05/2026 19:33

Oh and also ‘brains’ - Baby Brain, Menopause Brain, Perimenopause Brain and tbh, even Chemo brain. The same people are usually late, make frequent mistakes and forget stuff anyway - it isn’t a medical phenomenon.

I’ve ticked all these boxes myself btw.

DampSquad · 01/05/2026 19:34

And another (from reading another thread) "cis".

If those who are, want to be described as "trans" that's fine. If I'm not I don't need a descriptor (if that makes sense).

Springinmysteps · 01/05/2026 19:35

"Not a problem" said by the cashier in a store when I've paid and said thank you.

LancashireButterPie · 01/05/2026 19:40

"Yummy" (yummy in my tummy 🤢).
"It makes my teeth itch".

LancashireButterPie · 01/05/2026 19:49

Also those racist wankers who post "was it a doctor or an engineer" or "the usual suspects" about every crime on social media.

Anyone saying REsearch, instead of reSEARCH. Which includes virtually all radio/TV ads for charities, except GOSH, so hats off to them, and yes, I have made a donation.

Thanks so much for this. My husband died two years ago and you have brought back memories of him shouting at the TV “It’s reSEARCH, not RE search!”

Incandescentangel · 01/05/2026 20:10

Americans who say Ecspecially.
Nucular
People calling each other babe
famalam
bubba
the hubster
hubby
The wife

Parent as a verb. Can you parent your child please? I parented my children. You can’t even parent. I will parent.

Me too. People are parents. They don't "parent". They look after/bring up their children.

“Teach grandma to suck eggs” and “smell test”. They both make me feel physically icky.

Oh dear I use the first of those.

shits and giggles and squeaky bum time give me the ick.

Also those racist wankers who post "was it a doctor or an engineer" or "the usual suspects" about every crime on social media.

I don't get that.

Yep, 'cis' woman boils my blood too!

I am a woman, not a fecking cis woman! Hmm

I say REsearch, always have. ReSEARCH sounds odd to me.

Checking in

‘Just checking in about the meeting’
^^
‘Just came to check in with you’

I have a folder on my email full of emails where the subject is ‘Check in’ or ‘Checking in’😭

I think people hate this because they assume it’s an Americanism, but actually it never completely died out on this side of the Atlantic. I’m Irish and gotten is used all the time here. I remember on previous threads some Scottish and Northern English posters saying it had never died out in their area either.
So if you hear or see it don’t just assume people are watching too much television 😁

Cardisncocktails · 01/05/2026 21:07

'Picky bits'.
Just feckin NO.
Even just typing it has irritated me. Bloody M&S using it in their food ads has driven me away from shopping there.
I am aware my that my reaction is extreme, but I sincerely believe that anyone who uses this phrase should be shot. On sight.

kennycat · 01/05/2026 21:21

when people say, for example, a apple instead of AN apple. it’s getting more and more common.
i was listening to an audiobook where the reader did it so i just couldn’t continue to listen!! it made her sound quite thick!!

Flare up
Park up
Pack up

Why's everything up?

Edit: triggered and trigger warning. Everyone and their granny's dog seems to be triggered or needs a trigger warning. Completely overused and abused.

Edited

Train up annoys me. Surely you just train? Or you train somebody? Since when has it have to have the word ‘up’ attached? Presumably you wouldn’t train down? Similarly price point and colour way. What’s wrong with price and colour?

Flannelfeet · 01/05/2026 21:28

"Your as much use as a chocolate ashtray" said to me yesterday by my husband while he was ripping up the stair carpet and I was dealing with the washing and making the (homemade) bolognaise sauce, then getting ready to go up the town to get his prescription. Then coming home to wipe down all the woodwork and gut out our boys room. 🖕. Guess who was finished first 🙄

Yes also squeaky bum time!

The trouble with ‘picky bits’- and I understand completely, it’s so twee — is that there isn’t really a decent alternative .
‘Nibbles’ is just as bad, IMO. ‘Starters’ might not fit the bill either, and nor might ‘snacks.’
Any suggestions?

How about smorgasbord?

I think you'll either love or hate that alternative.

My partner gets it wrong though and says can you make up a shmortice board 😆

gingerninja · 01/05/2026 22:18

‘Say it louder for people at the back’ it’s very popular in instagram comments and makes me feel very stabby

beautifuldaytosavelives · 01/05/2026 23:15

‘If that makes sense’ - usually said after something perfectly clear. Very prevalent here and in my work place. It does to me, if it doesn’t to you, rephrase it before it comes out!
