Disappearing messages

What's the point other than when someone is doing something they shouldn't?

A guy I know has turned on disappearing messages for our chat yesterday. Very weird. He is part of our children's club. We message very occasionally when we are going to an event. Our kids (age 6 and 7) get on. Message will be something like 'what is event starting?' Or 'do you know what time/where is best to park tomorrow?' Etc. His partner goes to the club occasionally but never to events as she likes the time off.

He's turned on disappearing messages and it now feels like he is trying to hide our very boring chats from her, which I just find bizarre and slightly uncomfortable. When she is there I probably speak to her more than I speak to him.

My question, what is the point in disappearing messages? Do they get turned on for everyone or just one chat? Weirdly they delete from my phone too!

All just very odd.

I’ve accidentally turned them on before, just turn it off which you can do.

Justagirl95 · 25/04/2026 22:18

I agree! I think its weird.

It mifht have been a mistake though 🤷🏽‍♀️

Doggymummar · 25/04/2026 22:24

I have it on because of phone storage. I am in some sales groups that send hundreds of videos and pictures of items for sale every day and my phone memory was getting full weekly. Now they disappear.

I find it weird people want to keep old messages

Possibly a mistake! I just got a notification to say he had turned it on but no message, then he messaged me a couple of hours later asking a very boring question about water bottles! Maybe I am over thinking..

You can turn the auto download for photos and videos to off.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 25/04/2026 22:40

Can you not turn it off?

So weird, I wouldnt speak to him and i'd just say, i'll speak to you when I see you

ColdinHTK · 25/04/2026 23:02

Often when this happens the person has done it by accident

A friend has disappearing messages switched on for most people he knows because he doesn’t want or need to keep years worth of boring messages on his phone. When it first became a feature on WhatsApp I switched it on for many acquaintances as I also didn’t want to store loads of dull conversations on my phone. However I ended up switching it off after a few instances of losing crucial info (like a party date or an address). I can completely see why people would have innocent reasons to switch disappearing messages on.

I just noticed that a friend had turned on disappearing messages for both our individual chat and a group chat we're both in. I don't know why or if it was a mistake but I've turned it back off. I keep most of my messages apart from work chats which I do clear out regularly.

I would have thought it’s to do with phone storage.

newornotnew · Yesterday 09:23

I have it on because I don't want to store a squillion messages forever, it's just like shredding unneeded bank statements.

Storing data on servers uses electricity and water, on your phone it uses storage space.

Goldengirl123 · Yesterday 13:07

It’s to free up storage

I wonder if there’s been some sort of update recently as my BIL what’s apped me today and I noticed disappearing messages were on. There’s definitely not anything dodgy going on!
