And as for those not wearing cycle helmets who have a bad accident - the cost to the NHS of treating someone with a brain injury could be huge.

Tshirtking · 03/05/2026 14:38

It baffles me when people expect the elderly or disabled to only shop at certain times in the day or week. Expect them not to go to the post office at lunchtime. Expect them to just jump out of the way in shops, expect them not to move slowly etc etc. just who do the high and mighty, I'm in such a rush people think they are? Really? If you are in such a rush work around them but do not expect them to stop shopping at certain times or expect them to suddenly move. Have patience. It's not their fault you are in such a hurry. Have some good damn respect.

But that applies to loads of things. And most accidents are caused by drivers - so they're the ones costing the NHS money.

EstoyRobandoSuCasa · 03/05/2026 14:46

I agree that drivers are often to blame for the accidents. But I don’t agree that the consequences of not wearing a cycle helmet will only affect the cyclist and their family.

Anyone who votes Tory (and Reform, although currently at least this is less of an issue in Scotland).
People who go to Costco to buy literally shed loads of bottled water. I’m intrigued every time I go, given Scottish water is pretty nice.
People who have pets, then don’t let them upstairs, don’t let them on the furniture, yadda, yadda - if you don’t like pet hair, have fish or something.

Majority I see are couples. I don’t think it’s a social issue.

If you are stuck only talking to the same person day in day out that is isolating. Especially for retired people if they don’t have any structured external hobbies.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 03/05/2026 14:53

I live in a cul de sac and it's one way round. The number of cars/vans/trucks who sit and block it instead of pulling in to the left beggars belief. Usually when I'm leaving for an appointment. Always men driving. Entitled arseholes.

Tshirtking · 03/05/2026 14:53

I struggle round the shops. I do it to keep my independence as long as I possibly can. When all so important people tell me I shouldn't shop at this time because they are in rush a hurry, guess what, it's not going to stop me.

Gingercatlover · 03/05/2026 14:57

Neighbours who are baffled that we don’t like their labradoodles constant barking and that “no! It isn’t their dog barking” it must be the other neighbour.

If you can get it done in so little time the elderly also shopping carnt be in your way to much then can they now?

I worked for a supermarket. Hated Saturday morning working as trying to top milk and bread whilst the elderly were taking an age to decide do they need another two pints or whether they want brown or white bread this week.

Saw in other customers’ body and facial language that were frustrated by the elderly shoppers, being in the way

Then all those people need to show tolerance. You as a shop worker needed to show tolerance and offer help. When I'm struggling in the supermarket workers and customers often try to help me. We all could be disabled in some way and most of us will grow older. It's up to us to teach children and teenagers to show tolerance otherwise they won't be tolerant to you when you are elderly. Jenzzi all you are doing is making excuses to not show consideration. Oh yes I worked in a supermarket in my younger days, guess what, the difference between you and me that I showed compassion for people struggling.

Tshirtking · 03/05/2026 15:43

Jenzzi, you where a truly terrible shop worker. Yes I went there.

Whatexcellentboiledpotatoes · 03/05/2026 17:34

Why do people come onto a thread on Mumsnet that's 20 or 30 pages long and ask some question that been asked 50 trillion times already? Do they genuinely believe it must be a brand new insight after all those comments and all that conversation? Or can they just not be arsed to at least check the OP's posts?
Bonus bafflement points if it's a question that has already been answered in the OP.

No. I liked working with many customers. Covid created the worst people. I finally left 2 years ago as I was suffering from depression and burnout. Had 6 months doing little to get my life back. I’m now in a job which is much more enjoyable and interesting

I'm pleased you are feeling better, but you shouldnt expect the elderly to shop at a different time and you shouldn't expect them to move out the way. They have the same rights as younger people.

The thing is with elderly people who shop on Saturday mornings are completely oblivious to working age customers who want to grab stuff quickly. They are the root of frustration by many.

I simply cannot believe that you said this.

So 'old' people are only allow to go shopping when 'working age customers' aren't going to be held up by them.

This is a shocking and outrageous approach. I simply cannot believe that you said that.

Food couriers do this.

As do people who live in narrow Victoria terraces.

And if they wear a helmet the impact goes to their neck instead and still costs the NHS money.

And working age people are completely oblivious to the fact the elderly can shop whenever they damn well please.

Indeed. And chat to the people around them. Connection is what life is all about.

Absolutely this. OP the world doesn't revolve around you.

Yes, I'm in on shared space and I always slow down. I've tried the "excuse me" but either they do not acknowledge (or don't hear) or turn round and make a fuss about moving (which isn't necessary). I've had a far better success rate with the bell.

Ive never had that problem
