It’s also the fact that these people can sometimes also get quite irritated with people who happen to be walking/stood on the patch of pavement that they want to mount! I’ve had people ask me to move before so they can park on the pavement! Seems to be issue around schools a lot.

Indeed, I've had people essentially drive at me after they mounted the pavement just in front of where I was walking. Round here they don't tend to mount and stop immediately.

Quiet libraries are a thing of the past now.

Indeed. My local library isn't even about books any more. It's full of teenagers eating smelly junk food, shouting and fighting, boys using the computers to play shoot em up games, old blokes snoring in the chairs and people drinking big cups of takeaway coffee. Basically a drop in centre

Something my mother used to do.

She would order clothes from Marks and Spencer, something she wanted but they charged for postage if you didn't spend enough.

So she would also buy something she didn't want to get free delivery.

Then she would drive in to town to take the unwanted things back to M and S.

Talking about insurance, I am with you as to why anyone would go on holiday without insurance, but people don't always have insurance for other things.

I use a mobility scooter, I try not to get in the way of people but if I do run someone over and it is my fault I have insurance.

And the sanctimonious twits who post on a thread about something on TV to declare that they don’t own a television. Okay, great, thanks for that.

I had a friend who would say things like this. It was like she was almost boasting that they don't own a TV. Baffling

People who make excuses for the fact Micheal Jackson shared his bed with little boys.

MJ was found innocent by a court of law.

If he has been found guilty, I wouldn't speak a word in his defence. I would accept the verdict.

But he was found innocent.

It's not "making excuses" he was lawfully cleared of any wrongdoing.

I use a bell, normally to warn people I am about to overtake them on a shared path. I'm not expecting them to move but you'd be amazed at the number of indignant looks I get as I pass. To be honest you can't win.

I hate cyclists dinging their bell at me.

very elderly people who shop on Saturday morning

I am old now and mostly do online grocery shopping anyway, but I remember my elderly uncle always used to go shopping and into town on a Saturday because he loved the busy vibe. He lived alone and I think going where there were lots of people was important to him.

Yes, I think it's often hoping they can meet people they know for a catch up too if shopping locally and as you say the hustle and bustle.

I hate cyclists dinging their bell at me.

So if I want to politely let you know that I am about to pass then what am I meant to do? Pedestrians often have headphones in and don't hear an "excuse me", they are more likely to hear a bell. Or perhaps I just don't warn them at all and pass without fuss, but I'm sure I'd get criticised for that too ...

Some libraries even have music!

If you are in a shared space with pedestrians just slow right down and say excuse me please.

Ha ha. I don't have a TV (but watch loads on my laptop). I wonder if any of these people watch the constant videos and reels you now have on FB and YouTube.

And the government has just spent parliamentary time giving into the anti-cyclist lobby to introduce new cycling offences (I don't doubt that cyclists will be more likely to be found guilty, and given stiffer sentences than, drivers doing the same thing) rather than dealing with pavement parking which causes far more accidents.

And if you are in a shared space with cyclists keep over to the left and keep your dog on a short lead.

Though in my experience many still ding you for the sake of it, even if there's plenty of space for them to get by.

Flamingojune · 03/05/2026 10:46

I do as well because invariably there's plenty of room for them to get by and I think how much space do you need.

If they have so little spatial awareness they shouldn't be cycling.

When I cycle I say good morning or excuse me first - and if I get ignored, then I ding my bell.

Teyrn880 · 03/05/2026 11:30

Dog walkers who expect mums and kids/ runners/ the elderly to get off the pavement and onto the road when they meet on paths. Even seen one wait for a mum with a pushchair to manouver onto the road so she could continue her walk with her pooch…🤯
(I own dogs so not anti dog)

Performative sickly emotion on social media makes me feel pukey. Warmth and
community and joy.

Young people being so serious and uptight and anxious. Not their fault. I love young people but wish they lived in a time where they could let loose a little. Make a few mistakes. Again, social media.

People who don’t connect the way they treat others with how they’re treated. Walk around with a face like a slapped arse- expect that energy in return. If you genuinely connect with and speak with people nicely, life is infinitely better. I don’t understand rudeness.

igelkott2026 · 03/05/2026 11:31

A post above about the mum driving into town to take things back to "save" money on postage reminds me of the people who drive miles to get cheaper petrol when they could get it from a petrol station at the end of their road. You'd need to make a really big saving to make driving so far worthwhile.

igelkott2026 · 03/05/2026 11:33

A separate one is people being fusspots about things that don't affect them.

For example, people going away without travel insurance - their problem, surely?

People not going for smear tests - again, it doesn't affect anyone else.

And people not wearing cycle helmets - again, how does it affect anyone else other than close family if they have a bad accident?

Yes, I'm in on shared space and I always slow down. I've tried the "excuse me" but either they do not acknowledge (or don't hear) or turn round and make a fuss about moving (which isn't necessary). I've had a far better success rate with the bell.

The thing is with elderly people who shop on Saturday mornings are completely oblivious to working age customers who want to grab stuff quickly. They are the root of frustration by many.

My job is hybrid. 17 miles from home. I fill up when I have worked in the office as the petrol prices are 6p a litre cheaper.

And working age people are completely oblivious to the fact the elderly can shop whenever they damn well please.

Why anyone would choose to go shopping on a Saturday when it’s the busiest and eating into precious weekend time is baffling. Of course, some people have few options, but if you have the choice it’s the worst time to pick.

I go out at 8am. Everything bought and put away by 8:45am. That is including driving 2.5 miles each way

It’s annoying when some pillock who didn’t bother to get travel insurance injures themselves on holiday, then posts a self-pitying crowdfunding appeal for their medical expenses. Whilst it’s true that no one is forced to donate, whatever happened to personal responsibility?

I’ve noticed that the sort of pillock who doesn’t bother with travel insurance is often the same sort of pillock who thinks that a night out in Thailand is a great opportunity to ride a motorbike for the first time. And if people publicly bail them out when the inevitable happens, that’s only going to encourage other pillocks.
