howling wolf GIF

When you see 'AIBU', does AIBU sound in your head like the letters A, I, B, U?
Or like "AmIbeingunreasonable" run very fast together?
Or like a howl, "AYBOOOOO"?

YABU: everyone know how AIBU sounds
YANBU: AYBOOOOOOO AYBOOOOO

Mainstream media stalks these pages, yet no academic journal will pick up the important sociolinguistic research we are doing here. TABU.

It is simultaneously ehbu, and "Am I being unreasonable?" as one part of my brain is reading it, but another is interpreting it.

It's exactly this!

Fleurdalys · 25/04/2026 12:45

It’s most definitely’ AYBOOOO’

I’ve tried but it told me my image wasn’t a valid format 🫤

DH and eldest DC were talking about something from AITA recently and one if then asked if I knew what that was. I looked blank and they explained. I do if course know what it is but realised I didn't understand because I read/hear it as Am-eye-tea-a
So AIBU is obviously Am-eye-be-you

How did the DC say it? Spell it out? Or did they say it like a word?

Just said the letters. So 75% the same but my brain just did not compute!

DuckyDolittle · 25/04/2026 13:17

Oooh so in my head I read it as 'amIbeenunable' like it's the actual words but contracted! I had never realised that before! Human brains are weird 🤣

Giraffeandthedog · 25/04/2026 13:47

There are other acronyms that I sometimes can’t remember the real words for e.g.

STBXH = shoot the bastard ex-husband
AFAIK = and fuck-all (do i) I care

🙃(yes, I know they don’t make sense, but it’s what I hear in my head when I see the letters!)

I find it hard to remember that SIOB is not son-of-a-bitch

IMHO sounds in my mind like a nickname for 'Imhotep' and brings a kind of pyramidal authority to the tone of the post.

HTH is obviously “oh do fuck off” 😀

maudelovesharold · 25/04/2026 14:56

I think it depends on my mood. Sometimes eyeboo, sometimes ayeyebeeyou. Never a wolf howl! 😁

OrangeOpalFruits · 25/04/2026 15:06

No.
Then realise its not about me.
Then no (hedging my bets).
Then if it's a yes, yessyou'reaybooo.
And for especially troubling AIBUs, I have been know to scream AHHHWOOOOOH at odd moments.
Usually prefaced by the realisation i am saying AmIAIBU followed by AmIAmIBeingUnreasonable and it take a while for me to stopcanistopidon'tknowayboo.

LassiKopiano24 · 25/04/2026 15:06

I know its am I being unreasonable but I always read it as am I being an asshole

OrangeOpalFruits · 25/04/2026 15:08

Yes, because that's an Americanism. 🤓

365GelatoDaysAYear · 25/04/2026 15:08

YADNBU I hear in a Sloane Ranger voice as Yaaah, Dee, enbew. Like someone reassuring a friend that their bad behaviour was tickety-boo.

Ay-bou which I think came from the AIBU podcast which I think was short lived

OrangeOpalFruits · 25/04/2026 15:12

Real Yahs can say Surrey as one syllable!

DoorOpening · 25/04/2026 15:13

“Aye - boo” for me.

although sometimes I think “ai - boo” with the “ai” in the same tone as “naice” ham.
