Worrying over WBC count?

Summertimeflowers · 24/04/2026 20:17

WBC: 3.5
CRP: 15

I have been dealing with a nasty stomach bug courtesy of my 2 y/o since Monday. Vomiting subsided after around 24 hours but diarrhea has been persistent since (TMI sorry!). I had to go to A&E due to concerns of dehydration from 111 yesterday, thankfully I wasn’t but they told me my white blood cell count was low and CRP was high which was likely due to a viral gastroenteritis infection.

My mind has been in overdrive since, probably because I feel absolutely awful as well (extremely fatigued). I always thought WBC elevated when dealing with infection and lower meant your body was struggling to fight it?

Would be reassuring to know if anyone else has experienced this before? My GP didn’t seem concerned and just said to repeat in 6 weeks time but my mind is thinking all kinds. My brother had childhood leukaemia so I’m a bit of a chronic overthinker!

WCC often drop with viral illness, totally normal

MycactusandI · 24/04/2026 21:00

Agree with above. You tend to see higher WCC with bacterial infections.

Was your RBC, Ferritin & Hb low as well?

If you’ve had a particularly brutal infection, it uses up a lot of the bodies resources. Initially WBC rises sharply, but will get depleted.

Summertimeflowers · 24/04/2026 21:11

@Chunkychips23 everything else was normal apparently but I don’t know the exact figures of the rest of them?

It sounds like you’re struggling with health anxiety. You’ll get better soon with rest and hydration.
