Things people do that just baffle you

What does either a specific person in your life, or just the general public do, you just don't understand why they do it, and you either can't ask them or you've tried to ask them and they can't tell you?

Write it here and maybe someone else that also does it can tell you why, or has an idea as to why.

Here are mine:

Why do my neighbours across the street bring their bins outside a full 24hrs early? They are retired, home most of the day, go in and out of their house five or six times during that 24hr period, but bring their bins out early Monday morning when they don't get picked up until Tuesday morning?

Why do people talk on their phones on speakerphone in public, what is the purpose?

I dont understand the people who protest the hotels. Dont they have anything better to do on the weekend? Clearly not.

Why do people get on almost empty buses and trains and insist on standing near the doors in the way?

Why do people park next to you in an empty carpark!? Recently, I was sat in my car, in a car park which was barely full, and a woman decided to turn into the parking space next to me and scraped all the the way down my car in the process. I asked her why, and she couldn’t give me an answer.

That and why neighbours think “I know, let’s turn out music full blast in the garden, all my other neighbours will love that!”

Exactly!!

I can’t stand either of those things 👏🏼

Along a similar theme, why do some people insist on cleaning out their wheelie bins regularly? Even their recycling bin, which should only contain clean, dry waste.

I get that it might need a good hose out very occasionally if it gets really stinky and minging (which shouldn't happen anyway if you use bin bags) ; but it's a bin that's there for rubbish and it lives outside - why does it need to be sparkling clean every time before you dump the next load in it?!

Wheelie bins were less common in areas with a high proportion of terraced, or similar smaller housing developments, until around the late 00's to 2015 in my area. As they were rolled out, many people were very bothered by having big bins on the doorstep where they had previously kept black bags outside the back door and brought them out for collection day. It took a while for people to see the advantages of not traipsing rubbish back through the house for collection but during that time wheelie bin cleaning became quite a popular business start-up. And people could be quite judgy of neighbours who didn't pay the then £2 a fortnight fee to be as clean as everyone else!

I didn't live in an area where wheelie bin cleaning was prevalent but several friends have been shocked over the years that I only tip our bins on their side and hose them down myself once in a blue moon. I'm actually really glad to have read this thread to know I am not alone! 😂

Why do people mow their lawns at the crack of dawn on a Sunday? To me this is dick behaviour as it’s the most likely day for people to be wanting a bit of extra kip.

I've decided this is passive aggressive.

And the bin issues (early delivery to the gate, hosing out etc) is lack of real worries or interests.

I understand that but what's wrong with 5 or 6pm? Why are they out on the pavement from early morning when they are home all day?

And anyway, they don't care about noise, they walk their barky spaniel from 5am 🙃

I put my bin out mid-morning on the day before because I do my chores in the morning but the bins are collected before chore time on bin day. I do the actual dragging to the kerb part when I go out that morning as I am walking past anyway. I believe I am the local 'binfluencer' as my neighbour usually puts theirs out just after I do mine, presumably either the noise reminds them or they look at mine to remember which one it is that week!

You would be very peeved with me as I often don't collect the bin until the day after, either! I sometimes don't have to leave the house on that day and if I'm not going out for something else, I don't make a special trip just to get the bin, it's perfectly safe/not blocking the path (etc) where it is.

Why do (most) people spend their lives staring at their phones full stop.

Especially when out at a cafe.

Perhaps (!) a bit more niche but I see this a lot on TikTok videos for plane-spotting (and lately cherry blossom spotting in Greenwich Park etc) and it does annoy me quite a bit.

Posting beautiful vids of plump cherry blossoms and then answering 'Greenwich Park' when someone asks you 'where is this?' - only 180 acres to pick from ;) Similarly 'Heathrow' (or other airport) in response to queries about where someone spotted a particular aeroplane. I always cheer when someone gives a bit of context or a map reference.

Also, discovering about a decade ago that user experience research by Google showed that when searching for a word or phrase in a document (web page, PDF, spreadsheet - pretty much anything on a computer) 90% of computer users don't use Ctrl+F or Edit/Find to jump straight to it and instead scroll up and down visually scanning for it. I'm a computer nerd so would expect to have picked this up and obviously other people aren't, but of the useful and timesaving things you can do on a computer this would be in my Top One ;)

On all the phones I've had the search method is a bit different - on a web browser you pull up or down to bring the address bar back onto the page then overwrite the link with the terms you're after and it will tell you how often it appears on the page.

Why do older people with mobility aids sit in the accessible seats of the bus and pull the mobility aid in to the seat beside them, preventing another disabled person from sitting in one of the accessible seats?

Avantiagain · Yesterday 13:58

People who object to bin emptying moving to fortnightly because it will cause an infestation in their bin. Perhaps don't throw loose dirty rubbish in your bin and put the nappies in a bag

Calliopespa · Yesterday 13:58

TheGrimSqueakersFlea · Yesterday 12:40

That sounds sensible, but it I hate people parking next to us in a nearly empty carpark at night. I find it quite creepy knowing they've deliberately parked as close to me as possible.

Why do people use self service tills and not put everything straight in the bag? Everything goes on the shelf then they bring out the bags at the end and slowly pack

Because the machine starts quacking "UNEXPECTED ITEM IN BAGGNG AREA (You Thief!!!) " when you place the bag on.

TheQuickCat · Yesterday 13:59

I am baffled why at a particular bus stop. Only this stop. The people waiting to get on the bus swarm around it like zombies. They always make it hard for people getting off. Heaven forfend there is a pushchair or someone in a wheelchair!

My guess is there must be something in the air around this bus stop!

The bin thing might be to stop people parking across their drive…

I really really don’t get the speakerphone in public thing - if anyone does it, can they tell us why please? It’s so ignorant of other people’s peace!!

And the bin cleaning, well I used to pay someone to clean my normal bin til I wised up it never got dirty. I asked if they could clean my garden waste bin (the one that really does need cleaning) and they weren’t interested!

Yes! I use speaker phone, but I don’t answer it on public transport or indoors but out and about and at home, I hate having the phone near my head and I can never hear them anyway or have to turn it up so much it might as well be on speaker phone. I don’t have it blasting though and my voice is the same volume, so it’s just as if I was having a convo with someone there.

Retired people doing their supermarket shops on Saturdays 🙈.

This baffles me too tbh. I’m retired and love NOT having to do the weekly shop on a Saturday, we do ours Friday afternoon. The weekend is then free for other stuff.

Why do some people just not care what's around them?

People who will barge past you to get to where they want to go
People who will stand right behind your back in a queue so they're almost touching you

Especially when out at a cafe.

I like something to do when I’m at a cafe so I’ll take a book or do puzzles on my phone. Sometimes I’ll catch up with emails. I wouldn’t be doing it if I was meeting someone there though.

JoBrodie · Yesterday 14:02

@IrisPallida touché :)

Gloriia · Yesterday 14:03

I'm like your neighbours, take the bin out the day before and have never given a second thought to how this might baffle anyone.

That said it baffles me why if you have a barky dog you leave said barky dog in the garden woofing constantly, a noise which thoroughly annoys everyone in the vicinity. We have a dog, she barks approx once every 6mths. If she made a racket in the garden I'd soon get her indoors or, I dont know, take it for a walk.

I would really like to know why people don't flush the toilet (specifically in public/workplace).
And on the same topic, why people don't wash their hands after using the toilet (even if you don't touch the flush, surely you touch the door handles and lock?).

I think some people flush with the lid down, fair enough, but don’t check if everything has gone. I’ve had a few nasty surprises that way.

steppemum · Yesterday 14:04

Wtf, because it's a bin. It gets minging by virtue of being a bin. Even recycling bins get minging and some people also dispose of things like nappies in their black bags. If you don't clean them regularly you're going to end up washing maggots out of them in the summertime.

well, my recycling bins are always dry, so they never need washing, and everything in my wheelie bin is bagged.

I have lived here 15 years. I have washed my wheelie bin once, in pre food caddy days, when I didn't bag some food properly and we got maggots.
Recycling bins have never been washed.

My bin doesn't smell. It is just dry plastic.

My indoor kitchen bin, the lid needs washing all the time, but the main bit under the bag doesn't get washed much.
Again, good bags, nothing liquid, and we have a food caddy. So no bin juice or smells

Morepositivemum · Yesterday 14:04

I have my phone on speakerphone because it’s old old and my hearing is bad so I can’t hear otherwise. I try not to do it in public but sometimes I only have time at lunch to check in on my mum.

I went 20 years without cleaning my wheelie bins, then I got cats. The cat poo smell liners, even when bagged and thrown in another bag with other rubbish. So now I pay someone to come and clean my black bin every other week so it's not too smelly.

I think on your own is fine. It's when two people are both sitting at the same table glued to a phone I find it odd!
