What does either a specific person in your life, or just the general public do, you just don't understand why they do it, and you either can't ask them or you've tried to ask them and they can't tell you?

Write it here and maybe someone else that also does it can tell you why, or has an idea as to why.

Here are mine:

Why do my neighbours across the street bring their bins outside a full 24hrs early? They are retired, home most of the day, go in and out of their house five or six times during that 24hr period, but bring their bins out early Monday morning when they don't get picked up until Tuesday morning?

Why do people talk on their phones on speakerphone in public, what is the purpose?

Are there other places you would do this?

It is different. For example, when my mum was in hospital, if the lady next to her had a visitor in person it was much less annoying/disruptive than her constantly on video calls. It’s a very loud, tinny noise. The person is often talking much louder as they can’t read the room on the other side. A visitor in person would (hopefully) regulate their voice. Not so relevant for the park but in many other places it does make a difference.

I completely agree. I would only consider if it it wasn't a disturbance. The park is no noise than all the other mums chatting to each other etc, so of hubby calls to let me know which train he got or something similar I will answer but on speaker. I would never put it on speaker in a setting such as a hospital, office, waiting room etc.

I think it's odd when people take work so seriously. It's one thing wanting to do a good standard, professional job and its another thing when people are obsessive. Re-phrasing perfectly decent sentences, being overly pedantic, taking every tiny comment very personally etc.

I honestly wish we could start every meeting by saying "Right everyone. In 100 years we'll all be dead and in 200 years no-one will really remember we existed. So let's all just get this done sensibly shall we?"

Edited

I agree with this. I work in a small firm where my extra effort just goes into the partners' pockets. I still get a paltry COL payrise, told where to improve & they take another holiday. I've stepped back massively. I don't care anymore & just turn up & do what I'm paid for & go home.

Add to that a very hard working staff member had to leave because they're extremely unwell & can no longer work. A partner announced it in our staff meeting, and next sentence was 'so we need a new (job name). If you know anyone come see me or we'll advertise next week'. Perfect summing up of how valuable we are. Why push yourself?

Disagree, people tend to shout in speakerphone. It’s better if you’re out in the open at least; on buses or trains makes me want to grab it out of their hand and lob it out the window. So rude.

Lol. Well I assure you I do not shout! But yes, I have seen people so that too so I get where you are coming from. And no, I would only do it in what I would consider 'fair' settings that didn't impact others. I've just done it a couple of times at the park. Once hubby called to let me know he missed his train, once the hospital rang to confirm an appointment. I saw no harm in me taking the calls that way at the park and they were calls I would prefer not to miss.

It's possible to want periods to stop without actually wanting to be menopausal. It's simply an unfortunate corollary.

I don't want the increased cardiovascular and osteoporosis risk of menopause. But I do really, really want to drop the pain, mess, inconvenience, expense, and anaemia of periods. That's not baffling at all. I'd love to not have several days a month when I can't be more than an hour away from a loo, and can't sleep for more than 3 hours at a time without waking to an apparent axe murder scene. I'd like to be able to go on holiday without checking what part of the month it's going to be. I'd be delighted to get my circulating iron levels up to numbers that don't make my GP panic and ask how I'm still walking around.

If the price is that I swap all that for needing daily weight lifting and jumping to keep my bone density up, well at least it's a change.

People who believe any old drivel posted on social media ‘Muslims in local park killed and are a swan’ followed by 100 condemnatory comments and not a single person checking it out.

Back in the day it was Romanians who were traduced in this manner.

I might know the answer to this, it's also one of my pet hates. Someone once confessed to me that they do this and it's because they need a point of reference to park their car within the space, need the other car to line up theirs against if that makes sense. Shouldn't be driving if you can't gauge where the outside dimensions of your car are but hey !

I would be so annoyed that I'd wait until they got out and Id move my car mwah haw haw

My area has just gone over to food caddies. One week garden waste, recycling and food caddies are collected. Next week, general waste and food caddies. Several neighbours refuse to use the food caddy, which means their general waste bin will be minging by the time it’s collected.

Makes no sense.

I’m not faffing on with food waste bins. Gross and unnecessary

Fairplay737 · 25/04/2026 05:12

I do the phone on speakerphone thing! Not sure why but in the last few years I have transitioned to talking like this on the phone. Advent of voice notes? Going deaf? I’m 35. Just doesn’t feel satisfying holding it to my ear these days. Didn’t realise it was so annoying to so many!

junebirthdaygirl · 25/04/2026 05:19

For the bin thing. My dh gets a reminder on his phone the day before to put out the bin. If he doesn't do it right then he forgets.. He is in his 70s.

I know someone who is leaving his (young teen) kids to go and be posted abroad for work for three years. Entirely by choice. Divorced dad.

Baffles me he’d want that, regardless of them having a very competent Mum!

Possibly so he can provide more for their University years etc etc? In this day and age he can keep in touch more regularly than ever and it doesn't mean he won't be back when on leave etc!

I speak on speaker phone because my phone microphone isnt working well and i cannot hear the call without putting it on to loud speaker.

Washing plates, dishes etc before putting them in the dishwasher

Bleachedjeans · 25/04/2026 06:36

I love threads like this. I find it funny to read all the things that people find baffling or annoying. Unfortunately, they quickly get derailed so this thread has now turned into a boring rant about bins.

Bluegreenbird · 25/04/2026 06:39

Wearing things with massive designer labels. You’re saying that you’re desperate for people to think you have money. Which everyone knows is a thing that people who don’t think they have enough money do.

Having more than one watch.

Wearing high heels in daily life.

Bows on bald babies.

Dresses on non walking babies.

That sounds sensible, but it I hate people parking next to us in a nearly empty carpark at night. I find it quite creepy knowing they've deliberately parked as close to me as possible.

Why do people use self service tills and not put everything straight in the bag? Everything goes on the shelf then they bring out the bags at the end and slowly pack

The self service thing I do, because if you take anything off the stupid shelf to put into the bag the wretched “unexpected item in bagging area thing goes off” if you put your bag there at the start and try to pack as you go along, you will inevitably have to move things around in the bag (at least I do) and that also sets off the stupid alarm

VeneziaJ · 25/04/2026 06:51

honeylulu · 23/04/2026 12:40

I agree with the car park one.

On the same theme I went to the cinema one time with my husband for a daytime showing (weekday, we had the day off for his birthday). Went into the screen and we were the only ones there. Great we thought, sat down. Just before the film started a lone bloke came in AND SAT RIGHT NEXT TO US. So weird. The only explanation we could come up with afterwards was that he was an ardent rule follower and could only fathom sitting in the specified seat for his ticket.

Also people who stand up and clattering around with their bags 10 mins before the train arrives at the stop then stand by the doors looking all miserable and uncomfortable when they could have stayed in comfort a while longer. It wouldn't usually bother me but it always seems to be the people who sit in the window seats and so the aisle passenger (ie me) has to move to let them out, then sit down again.

Ditto knobs who stand up as soon as the plane lands even if they are seated waaay back and won't be leaving the plane for another 10 mins. No doubt the same ones who rush to the boarding desk when business class passengers/passengers travelling with young children/ boarding group A etc are called and stand there blocking it where the actual boarding group passengers shuffle around them. I feel like yelling "you are not getting on the plane any faster by doing that!"

Aaaahhhh I feel better now.

I get up before the train stops (not planes) because i have mobility problems and am scared that I wont be able to get off in time! People push you out of the way as they get off and new comers push their way on and then the doors shut and you cant get off! Its happened a couple of times so now I stand by the door

Retired people doing their supermarket shops on Saturdays 🙈.

You don’t know their circumstances for example, if they do childcare for an adult child all through the week then the weekends might be there any chance to do their food shopping

Cel77 · 25/04/2026 07:06

Drivers who don't indicate where they're going when they're turning. It's a good thing I'm always paying attention as I nearly crashed into someone's car twice last week because of them not bothering to tell me they were going to turn this or that way. It's such a huge safety thing on the road . It baffles me that people think that others need to be mind readers as to what direction they want to take.

Lilyundervalley · 25/04/2026 07:15

I had a friend who peeled mushrooms. Totally stumped me. Also not on board with ironing socks and underwear (explanation for that was that 'they look nicer in the cupboard').

usedtobeaylis · 25/04/2026 07:15

There's generally no need for speakerphone unless you specifically need hands free. It you're where other people are, it's rude and annoying, no ifs or buts. It's bad enough hearing one side of a phone conversation without hearing both. But worse than that, is the way people justify their phone addictions in cinemas etc.

Baffling things:

Not vaccinate their children
Watch reality TV
Talk about celebrities and public figures as if they know them
Freak out over othe people folding the corners of their books as if they're precious artifacts
Jump out of planes for fun
Immediately answer any questions with 'chatgpt says' or 'run it through chatGPT'

There’s a similar version of this for supermarkets or clothes stores. I’ll be aware of someone behind me who has some kind of FOMO. If I make a beeline in an empty shop for a pink t-shirt, you can bet they also want to look at what I’m looking at. So, to combat this (I don’t like people hovering around me), I’ll select a distraction item, go look at it and then once they start following like a zombie, I’ll ditch them and go look at what I really want to look at.

Other shop-related behaviour that baffles me is the phenomenon of people getting to the top of the escalators or the entrance to the shop and just stopping to have a vague look around, regardless of the obvious fact there are people behind.

My mother does that. She is a terrible cook. She says she does it because her mother used to do it. Her mother was a terrible cook too.

Tailgating when the driver in front is driving at/10% over the speed limit.

I saw tailgating in the slow lane the other day! Go around??

My friend also once made me a pizza with short crust pastry! And lots of courgettes on it.... We're no longer friends (not because of her cooking or mushroom peeling though).
