Things people do that just baffle you

What does either a specific person in your life, or just the general public do, you just don't understand why they do it, and you either can't ask them or you've tried to ask them and they can't tell you?

Write it here and maybe someone else that also does it can tell you why, or has an idea as to why.

Here are mine:

Why do my neighbours across the street bring their bins outside a full 24hrs early? They are retired, home most of the day, go in and out of their house five or six times during that 24hr period, but bring their bins out early Monday morning when they don't get picked up until Tuesday morning?

Why do people talk on their phones on speakerphone in public, what is the purpose?

OP posts:

Motorists who move off from a red light to turn left immediately but somehow crawl around the bend so by the time they made it, 3 cars behind them could not go past the green light because it is a short time before the light turns red again.

What could be on their mind? What could they be afraid of by not moving off and turning briskly. Are they in a dream?

If there were a busy escalator and stairs available, I would always take the escalator even if it means a small queue to get on and even though I walk up the escalator. This is because the moving escalator gives me twice the speed. The steps are higher and I have to take fewer steps to move the same distance at twice the speed.

Team escalator.

Of course, I might end up stuck behind a person who does not know the tube escalator etiquette of standing on the right. Which baffles me that someone chillin' on the left would not notice that almost everyone else on a busy escalator is standing on the right.

"Team escalator" 🤣🤣👏🏼👏🏼 I'm going to put "team stairs" on a t-shirt 😆

My MIL pays a company to do this for her every fortnight 🤣

Baffles me too!

We pay a professional company to clean our bins. We started after a few rounds of maggots over the summer. I would have only had them cleaned once or twice BUT the company only offer cleaning on a long term basis. Hence, bins get cleaned every week 🤷🏻‍♀️

Muttley1968 · Today 21:11

My neighbour likes to put one item of rubbish in their wheelie bin about 5am most mornings and just let the bin lid drop instead of putting it down quietly. Other neighbours have suggested murder 🤣

I reckon they can't read the menu. Either need glasses or can't see the menu over the other people in the queue.

Not infrequently, they're holding the menu in their hands!

my retired elderly relatives who do their full weekly shop together on a Saturday morning at peak time every single week, even though they do literally do it any time.

Why is that a problem?

People who iron tea towels. Whyyyyy

That will be me 🙋‍♀️
Because they look nicer, just like clothes do too.

Why is that a problem?

Because they could do it any time, being retired, and avoid going at peak time?,

All valid uses of an escalator. I would actually use one if I was in heels (incredibly rare 🤣). But I bet the vast majority just can't be arsed walking up actual steps. It's an easy way to get a few more steps in and use your legs. And it's free. It just always amazes me that so few people choose to use the stairs when they're available.

I'm amazed that you're amazed.
I use escalators because I see that as basically of the default. That's why they're there!
Usually there aren't stairs alongside, except on the Tube. And then I tend to be in a hurry or carrying stuff so it's much easier, especially if it's a long way down.
But most people do it, so again - it's the default, the norm. Not even a 50:50 thing!

flagpolesitta · Today 21:35

Newyearawaits · Today 21:12

Why is that a problem?

It just makes no sense to me- the local supermarket is absolutely heaving then so I don’t understand why they choose that time every single week religiously to do an entire weekly shop together.

AhMh67 · Today 21:36

i knew my answer right away. It totally baffles me people letting dogs on furniture and sleeping in their bed. It's truly disgusting. If my husband walked outside in bare feet and didn't shower everytime he came in or pooped and peed with no cleaning would he stuff get into my house or bed. But dogs do that every day. Filthy paws and unwashed bits. And don't start me on licking faces gross 😂

How dare they shop then. They should be out of the way so you can shop more quietly.
Perhaps they look after their grandchildren in the week.
If you don’t like crowds then shop online.

We moved to a town just south of London and quickly realised this town seems to have its own laws of the road. If you’re on the main road, cars will often slow down to let cars out of the side rode and onto the main road. It’s not their right of way and utterly ridiculous behaviour. I’m suprised it’s not cause more accidents because WHY WOULD YOU STOP IN THE MAIN ROAD TO LET SOMEONE OUT OF THE SIDE ROAD. We are not talking small roads or roads filled with traffic when it’s handy to let some cars out. No, just normal roads. Cars have tried to wave me onto the main road before and I’ve just sat where I am and refused to move until there is a gap in the traffic LIKE YOU’RE SUPPOSED TO. I’ve been wondering if one rogue driving instructor has somehow infiltrated the town and taught everyone. It’s not a small town either!

It’s a not-London thing. It makes me absolutely rage when people randomly stop to let cars out. Worse it emboldens the entitled to push their way out.

tanqueray10 · Today 21:45

People who will not give way in a country lane . They drive right through even though it’s already congested causing complete gridlock. All because they are too selfish to wait 30 seconds for oncoming traffic to move so that everybody can keep moving and get to where they need to be. Absolutely baffling.

JuliettaCaeser · Today 21:46

It is annoying they have all week to shop the poor sods in traditional jobs have only the weekends. Why not free it up for them and why would you choose to go when it’s busy when you don’t have to?

I work for myself and often am out seeing clients so i can easily shop in the week no way would I waste my weekends doing it.

It drives me insane! I’m from a small town and it doesn’t happen there. The things I’ve witnessed where I live now just baffle me.

My "across the roads" have always put out their bin a day early. It's a wide road with verges so not in the way. I have relied on it as a reminder since I moved in 10 years ago. When they are away the whole thing goes to pot on our road - we all have to look at the bin calendar. Last few months with ill health they are relying on others are doing it for them on the day. Heartbreaking.

tofumad · Today 22:12

ThatLilacTiger · Today 12:20

Wtf, because it's a bin. It gets minging by virtue of being a bin. Even recycling bins get minging and some people also dispose of things like nappies in their black bags. If you don't clean them regularly you're going to end up washing maggots out of them in the summertime.

I've never cleaned my bin and never had maggots

lovealieinortwo · Today 22:14

The posters on the Rpyal board who spend all day everyday dissecting H&Ms behaviour, body language, clothes, etc. I find it absolutely baffling.

People who don’t wash their hands after going to the toilet, at least keep up the pretence in front of others!

.Pensioners in their 80s and 90s who have to shop on Saturday mornings and complain how busy it is. During my supermarket assistant days, they used to annoy the staff and the working age customers. They annoy me still. I am sure they can find an hour- hour and a half during the week. I accept those who are taken by their working age children. That was about 3%.

. The need for people to play their music - which is usually crap, on loudspeakers on their phones on buses.

. People who go on holiday and only leave the hotel to go home. Then not eat any of the local cuisine. That is my holiday hell. Then see their photos on FB - they could have been anywhere. Nothing in the photos to indicate which country they are in.

Fair, but it's certainly not the case for the couple in their early 40s across the road, or their two teenage sons.

Or most of my other neighbours.

How can you be certain, though? People of all ages can have ME, CFS and similar conditions that can leave us absolutely exhausted. A lot of able-bodied folk seem to believe that you're either perfectly able-bodied or otherwise permanently utterly unable to do anything.

However, when your energy is seriously limited, you'd much prefer to use it doing something where there's no simple alternative or even (how dare we think we're entitled to it) that's slightly enjoyable. Why on earth would you waste a large proportion of your precious energy for the day on walking down to the local shop and back, when you have a car that could preserve it for something more important?

Even when people are definitely fully able-bodied, they may just see walking as a waste of time and driving a more efficient use of their time. Different people prioritise different things and don't necessarily agree that Option A is automatically 'better' than Option B.

AntiqueBabyLoanSmurf · Today 22:21

ruethewhirl · Today 13:44

Disagree. Driving and parking require different skills.

But surely you need the latter skill in order to be able to do the former properly? You wouldn't accept a pilot who was textbook once in the air but no good at take-offs or landings!
