The Facebook marketplace sofas

nelliah · Today 18:59

I haven't moved house for a long time. Bought my last sofa on Facebook marketplace. I live in a tiny house and am moving so can finally buy a corner sofa, but can't afford a new one. My god, Facebook is now flooded with poor quality, cheap, knock off sofas. Hundreds and literally can't fine one legitimate second hand one in the colour I need. Just a moan. Has anyone bought a sofa off marketplace recently?

I have bought a few but it’s really hard seeing what’s actually a used sofa and what is a scam knock off one .
i usually check the profile or other listings
ebay is worth a look

What is a ‘knock off sofa’? Or a scam sofa?

trainedopossum · Today 19:42

We got rid of our very tiny, old and weird little sofa (it was left in our house by the seller) on fb but bought our own secondhand sofa on eBay.

I already have an old Ikea model that’s the perfect size and shape and wanted another for the new place so I put a search on and after a long wait one came up for sale. Had to hire a man with a van to transport it but I’m sure all in it was much cheaper than new and it’s exactly what I wanted.

Eta: Sorry maybe that’s not helpful re Marketplace! It was good for getting rid but eBay was a better option for buying the one we wanted.

How can a sofa be illegitimate?

I’ve literally sold a Barker & Stonehouse sofa & chair on there today. Was easy, buyer collected.

There's loads on mine, all set at free and local but they are just a scam or a company selling bad quality new ones that won't last!
My current one I got from the street FB page for free.
Might be worth checking out charity shops, some are better than others for a bargain but most deliver.

I recently got an Ikea sofa and chair on marketplace. It came with the delightful (not) addition of FLEAS! No sign of it in the house when collecting through. Beware! It took 8 weeks of hell to rid our home of them

It’s loads and loads of sellers that list very cheaply made sofas as second hand / unwanted etc. It’s same with beds. It’s really hard to find people selling good quality second had sofas amongst all the dodgy sellers.

They're using photos which aren't the same sofa they are selling. If you look closely you will find the same sofa twice from two different people in totally different parts of the country.

I had the same experience with wardrobes on FB Marketplace! Endless adverts for very cheap, very new (often still with the plastic wrapping on) wardrobes. Many of them invited buyers to specify the number of doors, drawers etc required, so they didn't seem like genuine secondhand/unwanted wardrobes, but more as though FB Marketplace was being used as a showroom (although some of the photos were a bit grim - lots of unmade beds, piles of laundry etc reflected in the wardrobes' mirrors). It was quite difficult to find what I wanted - a genuinely second-hand sturdy wooden wardrobe!

Look for Facebook groups dedicated to certain brands - there is one for Loaf for example. Stuff doesn't go super cheaply but it's expensive to begin with and generally looks very good condition. Also there are Facebook groups for companies who resell dead stock (ex display, customer returns etc), they are worth hunting down. Again not super cheap but possibly more reliable than a random person on marketplace.

You have to filter the search results to used - good, you can do used - like New but some dodgy ones still slip through

Got mine about 6 months ago for £50 and it was actually like new!

StarCourt · Today 21:25

Came on to say the same thing, try using the filter option. Also a PP mentioned Sofalistic, I have bought off there and sold off there, it was easy
