To think that some people are just plain spiteful and horrible and wonder why they never seem to face any consequences?
Just that really
So I'll give you all an example: My DP works for a bookies and its only a small shop so only him, 1 other member of staff and their team leader we'll call her jane for the purpose of this thread. Jane is also not english she is originally from Poland and you'll see why thats relevant soon.
So my DP has a holiday booked for the end of may to Egypt and with everything that's been going on there has been a bit of uncertainty well Jane was laughing and saying to my DP haha u won't be going and basically taking pleasure out of his potential misfortune. Also she has openly said (and please remember that these are not my views) this is what she said word for word "I won't let brown people use the toilet". My DP was so shocked when she said that and said "Jane you can't say that its racist" and she just laughed and stood by what she said. When my DP came home and told me what she had said I was absolutely disgusted. I asked him why didn't he pull her up on this behaviour as by not doing anything he is also complicit in the behaviour. He said he can't do anything without fear of losing his job because the management all stick together. This woman just seems to breeze through life though having never had any consequences to her nasty words or actions. My DP is actually looking for other jobs because of how toxic the working environment has become oh and here's the ironic bit the other member of staff that works there is a kurdish immigrant so not white and she says stuff in front of him too with no fear of repercussions. I don't actually know what I'm looking for from this thread I'm just frustrated that horrible people seem to breeze through life blissfully unaware of how much they affect others with their words and behaviours.

Eastern Europeans have quite a reputation for racism, looks like Jane is living up to it.

If the company was reputable they'd have rules against employees being racist and Jane could be dismissed, but his best bet is to work for a better employer.

Read the word bookies and instantly knew. Many of the people I worked with in the bookies were racist, very openly - one was even aggressive towards minorities who would enter the shop and had a tendency for assaulting them (highers up didn’t seem to think this was an issue!). It’s a very toxic workplace. I’d be looking for a new job too.

Its a reputable company but my DP is worried that repercussions will come back on him if he says or reports anything. This is why he is looking for other jobs because its getting him down being in a toxic work environment. He has actually got a job interview next week so we are hoping he can be out of there asap. Its just the whole taking pleasure in others potential misfortune I think because me and my DP are not like that and would never be so horrible its hard to understand why others can be like that.

Many bookies workers are absolutely miserable due to the nature of the job and the attitude you have to have to cope with it for so long. Gamblers losing thousands into hundreds of thousands at the expense of their families, homeless causing trouble (and dying on your doorstep in my case), angry men threatening to rape and kill you when you don’t have enough in the safe to pay them out, verbal and physical assault, it’s a hard job with long hours and companies are constantly looking for ways to cut staff which puts even more stress on them. This is why you end up with the racists, sexists and people who are spoiling for a fight.

I used to work with several Eastern Europeans and none were racist, at least not openly. In fact one black friend of mine (man)who worked there got married to a Slovak or Slovenian woman past 10 years or so ago. So she can’t be racist!

Well done your OH for challenging her. Just a shame management doesn’t take a similar stance. Hope his interview goes well and he can leave that toxicity behind.

I too worked beside Eastern Europeans and never experienced them being racist either.

Karma usually finds them one way or another.

I think this is where my DP is going wrong coz he's a happy go lucky will chat to anyone and everyone not a nasty bone in his body so he doesn't understand why everyone is not like that. Even people that go in the shop trying to be aggressive hes still nice to them and he obviously doesn't let them walk all over him but he will try to de escalate the situation with them where as Jane will swear and shout at them which let's face it is never gonna solve an already volatile situation and basically tell the to F off out of the shop.
But for some unknown reason even customers are too scared to put in a complaint about her. Its absolute madness how she just seems to get away with everything.

See this is what I believe but maybe the impatient person inside me is getting frustrated at how long that seems to be taking. Actually maybe now I am bordering on spiteful waiting for someone to get there karma? These are the things I struggle with.

It doesn't sound like he was being complicit.

Eastern Europeans are white, mainly being Eastern European is not a race. This was about a white woman saying black people cant use the toilet.

Let’s not try to minimise that and put it in the same category as a sweeping statement about Eastern Europeans.

If it’s a well known company they should have a whistleblower policy and he should be able to report it anonymously (the best way is on the phone or through a web form). If you search the company, you may even be able to find it on the web.

Yes it doesn’t sit well with me to feel like that but the behaviours of some people are so abhorrent and I do believe if you put out shit then it comes back to you

I meant by him not reporting it higher up and just basically giving a soft "you cant say that" like you would with a toddler just softly softly.
