To think that Anna Wintour (Vogue editor/ I.e. “The Devil Wears Prada”) would get away with her behaviour if she was a man?

Just seen that the sequel to “The Devil Wears Prada” (AKA the unofficial framing of Anna Wintour) is out soon.

For those not in the know, Anna Wintour is the former longstanding editor of Vogue. She has widely been portrayed as cold, ruthless, and selfish. However, am I being unreasonable in thinking that Wintour would have gotten away with such behaviour if she’d been male? It seems to only ever be female bosses that get bad reputations! In my experience, angry, shouty men are widely accepted and even applauded!

I think these men would have got away with it 20 years ago. Not now. I think you are holding her to the standard of bosses in the past, not how industry currently expects you to behave

I mean, she did 'get away with it' in the sense that she's an extremely successful woman. Is she liked? No - but then neither are selfish, ruthless men, in my experience. No one likes a cunt. Fact.

Well she gets along just fine acting that way as a woman. She made her whole brand on being cold, elitist, aloof, and obsessed with flavours of the month who she then drops like hot coals when she no longer deems them trendy.

In what way is she not ‘getting away with it’?

Don't the "elite" lap all.that pretentious nonsense up though?

She does get away with it though. She had the job for decades. You could also make the argument that a man would have been accused of bullying if he treated women that way. I don't think your argument stands up.

Workplace culture in the US is very different to here. There are far fewer protections for employees and bosses can be absolute wankers without much recourse and an employee can be dismissed much, much more easily. I don't think it is a gender issue, more a workplace issue.

Anyone else read this in David Brent's voice?

I agree with PPs, how is she not getting away with it? I know people talk about her but people talk about famous male bosses as well. Didn’t Steve Jobs have a reputation for being a bit of a bully with very high standards and expectations of sacrifice from his employees, for example.

TERFlabubu · 17/04/2026 18:51

She doesn’t get away with it as there are literally two blockbuster films centered around her being an “angry woman”! Would we get the same film about a difficult male boss? No!

She isn't "Angry" she is supposed to be stand offish and assertive and all about "the brand" the character is a contradiction.
