Entitled spider in my kitchen

So this is mostly a rant about the spiders. I absolutely hate them.
My DC and I went away yesterday for overnight trip to visit my friend. Before we left, I checked everything is turned off, windows are closed etc. I noticed empty glass in my DD bedroom and I took it downstairs and left it by the sink. We got back this evening and after I cooked the dinner, I put everything in the dishwasher. Then I pick up the glass and there was a gigantic spider at the bottom and he spun a bit of the cobweb at the bottom of the glass. I swear he was so big, I could see his teeth or whatever you call them. What is he doing in my kitchen is the question I ask?! I thought the rule is, that massive house spiders live outside in the spring/summer and try to come inside the house in the autumn. But oh no! This asshole was prancing around my kitchen counter while I was gone. I don’t actually know if he was a male but I assume he was as he had the audacity to disturbed my peace in my own home😂

Out in the garden. Back corner.

It’s a spray that was designed for fleas but kills everything. I found out about it on here a few years ago when someone else had used it in autumn spider season. We rarely see spiders as we treat the house twice a year with it. My experience of the spider bite terrified me so I’m afraid it’s me or the spider now. We live on a farm so get massive spiders, we also have house dogs and they’ve never been affected by it. We treat the house and go out for a couple of hours leaving the windows open.

Edited

Thank you so much. I just purchased one online! It doesn’t say that it works on spiders but I will give it a go. Instructions says that carpets should be vacuumed for 7 consecutive days after treatment?! Did you do that? I don’t know if I have an energy to hoover the whole house every day for a week🫣

I hate spiders, I have a very verbal gecko behind my fridge..runs like crazy when I confront him. I swear he gave me the finger the other day. He chirps many times a day. Upside is that we have a built in mozzie killer. Our dogs do not even react to him anymore. Damn loud cocklodger. Def male or we would have eggs, so he is a HE for sure. uggh.

Mossstitch · 17/04/2026 00:18

@CrackInTheGlass this intrigues me, I've heard that the spindly spiders (named as 'hangers' by my youngest son) eat the big hairy ones but how do they catch them as they are so fast🤷
I have an agreement with the spindly ones that so long as they stay out of my bedroom on the second floor they can remain rent free. The big hairy scary ones I'm afraid end up in Henry's tummy or the dyson hand held and deposited at the bottom of the garden.🙈

DiscoBeat · 17/04/2026 00:18

House spiders are house spiders because they live in your house. They're not visitors. They just pop out from the skirting boards or whatever at certain times. But they're great at snaffling flies so they're fine by me!

I am a bit of a wimp when it comes to spiders but I have an understanding with the balcony false widows and the bathroom cellar spiders....don't get in my way and I'll let them live. Any offspring are evicted.

The cellar spider kind, I don’t mind so much. They won’t be welcome in my house but it’s not as bad as the ones who look like they are on steroids. False widow..absolutely not

We had a house spider when I was a child who we named Barney. He was very big and long and lived for a while! He used to sit behind our corner sofa and come out every once in a while to greet the dog. I think of him fondly.

He was definitely not Linda. That sounds too dainty for my big fat hairy spider

That's not my spider! His arse is too hairy!

Butterme · 17/04/2026 00:28

You left the house for a night, what did you expect - that’s like years to a spider.

He’s now got squatters rights you know!

False windows get evicted (carefully!), all other spiders are welcome - I like spiders and I live in hope they'll help keep the clothes moth numbers down.

(I haven't seen a clothes moth in decades! Are they still a thing, then?)
OP - a bigger spider is likely to be a female, just sayin' 😉 🕷️ 🕸️

Please rewind and explain properly. Why do you have a gecko behind your fridge? Where did it come from? Where do you live? What does it do all day? I need more info please

Clothes moths are definitely still a thing. Unfortunately, somehow they got into our house three years ago and despite many treatments, we still can’t eliminate them. I had a whole house treated last autumn and yet couple of days ago, I saw one on the ceiling. I’m hoping that Indorex someone kindly suggested for spiders, will work on the moths too

No, I thinks that’s for a flea infestation, I just spray the skirtings, around windows and in nooks and crannies as well as the top corners of the rooms 🥰

LOL, I live in Dominican Republic, there are geckos everywhere, but most do not take up residence behind fridges, Mine is named George and he chirps loudly several times a day, and occasionally he will run out and go up the cupboard where he will sunbathe for a while, before returning behind the fridge. I assume that he comes out at night to go mozzie hunting

Ormally · 17/04/2026 10:37

I had an empty cylindrical fish habitat under a counter in the kitchen. Picked it up not so long ago, and there was a huge spider in the bottom, also with a bit of web there along the side. I took the cylinder out and put it sideways on the grass and (with some encouragement/rolling) the spider stomped off (big enough to see quite easily on the grass).
I don't really want them in the house if I find them but felt so guilty because I kept thinking - it had sought out a pet habitat!

ToadRage · 17/04/2026 10:38

I hate spiders too. Used to get them, huge ones, alot in my old flat. We don't get quite so many here we have mesh over the open windows in the summer to keep them out and keep the cat in. My husband thinks they come on through the air bricks, I'd rather they didnt come on at all. My brother used to catch them in a cup and put them outside.

Ormally · 17/04/2026 10:40

They do! They stalk them and then truss them up like a mummy. If they make a web they can usually do a thing where they vibrate really fast and move the web around (I think it also gives the impression there is something caught in it that might attract a big hairy, but it's not clear that it is their nemesis doing the vibrating).
(Edit - a lot of the time, I think they also leave the legs, which is horrifying to find)

House spiders live indoors all year. You just see them in autumn coz they come out to mate.
That lovely chap is part of your family 😄

And they will die if put outside.

That's to hatch fleas.

Please don't flush him down the bog. He's done nothing to you.

You have spiders in your house. You've always got spiders in your house. They're excellent pest control.

That's true. These are really very fast (and very thick legged and hairy).
Swoosh from underneath one chair to another - it's like lightning!

He’s yours now- you have to name him.

I had a spider called Linda in my bathroom for ages, then one day she wasn’t there anymore and I really missed her!

I had one called Frank who lived in the top corner of the diamond shaped window inside my front door. It's been about 2 years and I still wonder what made him leave.

italianlondongirl · 17/04/2026 13:48

Please just put him out in your garden. Don’t kill him

I used to be terrified of spiders. We had a huge one who lived behind our toilet cistern. He would come out at night then scurry back to hide again when we turned the light on.

I became really fond of him- not sure why. Mainly because I saw he was scared of me I think. We had him about 3 years. We were very sad when he eventually died (found him upside down on the floor).

They are more frightened of you. I know you know that and it doesn't really help, but even the big ones are so little.

(I'm Australian too, and not sure I could cope with a Home Hunstman... but in the UK they are much smaller).

Numbers are increasing in the UK due to climate change.

Unfortunately most of our house has wool carpets so eradicating them is nigh on impossible, but I try to keep the numbers down.

To OP - I don't know about Indorex, but when I was a teenager my mum treated the house for fleas one summer. Turns out the house, and more specifically my bedroom, had a lot of woodlice. Which all died. I remember getting up to go to the loo in the middle of the night and the walking across a disturbingly crunchy floor in the dark. I have a phobia of dead woodlice now.
