I have a woman to watch my 7mo every now and then when he's at home and I'm working.

She doesn't have childcare qualifications or anything, she's just a nice local lady I found on the local Facebook page. She charges £100 for the day 9-5 (outside London) so a pretty low rate.

I work from home so can help out, put baby down to nap, come in to breastfeed, etc. He sleeps for about 2hrs total during her time here.

Today she had to leave at 3.40pm as her child was ill. I obviously now cannot continue working for the rest of the day, though I'll still be paid for a full day.

Should I pay her:

  1. The full £100
  2. £83 (the pro rata rate)
  3. £90 (middle way)

Please just tell me the right thing to do, I'm rubbish at stuff like this. Thanks.

Think of it this way. If she leaves are you able to replace her quickly enough? Is she good with your baby?

if she is a good babysitter then I would pay her the full amount BUT I would let her know you are doing so as it’s an emergency sort of situation. You don’t want her to think that it’s ok to leave for all sorts of reasons and you will always pay her the full amount.

Also remember that just because you need her, she needs you too. She doesn’t have any qualifications so this is a nice set up for her too.
