To cancel my TV license…

Has anyone else cancelled their TV license? How much hassle do you get from TV licensing if so?

I’ve not watched live TV for ages, but have been a bit confused about the rules 🫠

I have occasionally downloaded and watched a programme via Sky Q but can stop doing this.

I don’t need to watch BBC iPlayer, nor do I at the moment.

I consume everything else through streaming, and never live.

Has anyone done this?

We haven't had a licence for over a decade. No live TV, no licence. There's a page on the licencing website to declare you don't need one. I get a letter every year to remind me to update my declaration.

Catza · 15/04/2026 14:05

Yes. I get a letter every couple of years and submit declaration online. That's all.
The rules are pretty simple - you watch live TV, you need one. You don't watch live TV or BBC iPlayer, you don't.
If someone shows up at your doorstep, don't let them in.

I didn’t renew mine in August. Filled in a declaration online, haven’t heard from them since.

Just to add live events on Netflix count (for some unfathomable reason)

I cancelled my licence and had a visit from the inspector a week later!!! I explained that I didn't watch live TV. They were satisfied and adjusted their paperwork. Will see what happens next year lol. You can watch TV as long as it's not live....

I did it about 20 years ago. I have to do a declaration online every year to stay i still don't watch tv, that's it.

be sure to read the questions fully, as it seems like it's written to trick you, there's a section of something like 'do you watch...' where you want to choose no, and then similar questions reworded like 'can you confirm you don't watch...' where you want to choose 'yes'

I didn’t renew mine jan 25. Told them it was due to their misogyny with their broadcasting of the Olympics boxing.

didn’t hear a word.

I did buy a new one October 25 as I wanted to watch traitors!

I didn’t pay mine from 2014 until 2024. Just filled out the thing about live tv. Then, for some mad reason, I paid it 2024 and 2025. That’s me done. Not renewed it this year as I have Sky Glass which is mainly streamed and the only live things we watch are sports things really. Just say you don’t watch live tv.

MesonBoson · 15/04/2026 19:57

You do not need to tell TV licencing anything.

You do not have to interact with them.

You can just ignore them.

They send out letters addressed to The Legal Occupier. This is just bullshit to intimidate credulous people. There is no such thing.

If they come to your door, you do not have to speak to them. Just close the door.

They have no power to mess with you at all.

MesonBoson · 15/04/2026 19:57

Fucking declaration? The cheeky cunts!

PinkPonyAnonymous · 15/04/2026 20:05

I didn’t have one until the pandemic. The years their hounding became less frequent. When I first lived without a TV (before Netflix streaming in the uk) I got letters frequently. Around 2013/4 they tapered to annually.
