To suspect police are worried about vigilantes - Epsom attack

I live relatively close to Epsom and so this appalling assault is all over my news feeds and social media.

BBC News - Town left in shock by appalling rape outside church
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c8dl5yevjg9o

The police have asked for witnesses but no descriptions have been given. Cue lots of very disturbing posts and comments from people who very clearly think these men are not white.

I can think of half a dozen scenarios where this is not being disclosed but, based on the comments, I think it all comes down to fears that local communities will take it on themselves to "apprehend" anyone who even vaguely looks like the perpetrators? And while the comments I am seeing are mostly white people being disgusting in their assumptions about brown and black people, i can imagine police would he equally concerned if, for example, the woman was Asian or Black and her attackers were white.

Is this where we are at? Where people make horrible racist assumptions and/or where police have to worry about how they will protect the broader community if they give any details of criminals?

A church built with stone. There is a sign in front of the building.

I think @Whatafustercluck was referring to Samir Zitouni, the member of train staff who was injured trying to protect passengers?

The outpouring of love and charity to the heroes of that day was a brilliant testament of the toleration and lack of racism in this country.

It reminds me of the disgusting racism that was directed at the black footballers that missed the England penalties in the last World Cup. Everyone was up in arms discussing how horrendously racist Britain was, until of course there was an investigation as to where those comments originated from and it was outside of the U.K. 🤦🏻‍♀️

It is. Someone specifically asked 'how can they not have a description' alongside others asking 'why have they not released a description they have'.

I think its fair that some people have a lack of trust that the police have a description and have chosen not to release it yet due to risk of riots and wanting to either avoid them or get support in place to deal with them.

But it is also true that there are reasons why a victim cant describe them well and people are explaining the why of that aspect.

If you believe that all victims can describe perpatrators clearly you are left with only the option that the police are lying in the statement, not two options.

But that's not what the post that comment was a response to was about?

Fair enough. I misinterpreted the bit about credibility of rape victims.

I have reported to @MNHQ that posters on this thread seem to want to derail a discussion about an individual woman's trauma into a culture war. This is not troll hunting but realism that Mumsnet is a major platform and will attract what major platforms attract.

I am sorry that my post about violent gangs/groups of local, white, mixed-sex young people in my area was deleted after being reported. It was an attempt to counter the insinuations and fearmongering here about 'Other' men. And mentioned disenfranchisment caused by vast social inequalities and the selfish aims of the super-rich.

Didn’t you accuse me of being paid to write posts that you disagreed with?

Because there’s not a great deal we can do about our home-grown rapists, but we can stop importing them from other countries. That’s why people get more angry when the perpetrators are non UK nationals.

We also lose twice because we then have to pay for the trial and legal representation and if they are found guilty we pay for the time that is spent in jail. It’s just money pouring out holes all the time.

Oh goodness no I fully understand that the victim herself may be completely traumatised to the point that she can't speak.
I totally get that.
I'm not looking at it from her perspective, though, I'm looking it from the perspective of cctv recordings of the incident.
Now maybe I'm expecting too much of that.

Epsom Methodist Church is having an 'act' at 12.30 today. Could be interesting.

The rapist is always a man, that's true. Why though is it when the likelihood or the actuality is that the male rapist is a migrant, asylum seeker or a refugee, that people who feel aggrieved at the crimes of such people organise and get lots of fellow protesters out, but when the rapist is White or born in the UK, there's never a protest?
Obviously there are a lot of people such as the women who.protesred against the killer of Sarah everard happy to come out and protest. Must fewrr who did the same for Zara Aleena? Racist women?

Agree with this

I really do not care what the ethicity of those vile animals is. How is the Police expecting to catch them if they do not release the description and CCTV?? Do they actually want to find them?

Fuck tagging them, they need deporting.

Yeah but no one’s deporting them. Just letting them roam free and disappear. So tag them!

Mumandcarer80 · 16/04/2026 11:50

She’s likely not got a good look at the man. You go into fight or flight mode. About a month back I walked past a man pleasuring himself in a pub doorway. He was about 60/70 odd and white btw.

I had my vulnerable daughter with me she had had a few seizures and I needed to go and catch our bus home. But I thought later on I should have took a picture of him. There is CCTV in the area but I wouldn’t want the wrong person to be accused. My main priority was getting my daughter away from him not gathering evidence.

Surrey Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Lisa Townsend is a Conservative. Why would she order the police not to give details of the suspects because of the local council elections?

I am still so horrified by this story. This poor woman being set upon by a gang of men.

Yes, it is where we are now.

The roundabout painter mob see rape/peadophilia as an attack on 'their' white women/children and are happy to weaponise it without giving a shit about the victims.

When the suspect is white they don't care. Russell Brand is being 'set up by the authorities' because 'free speech'. Trump isn't in the Epstein files, despite being mentioned in there more than any one.

They automatically assume any crime was committed by an immigrant a) because it suits their racist agenda and b) the likes of Farage and co have conditioned them into a frightened mindset.

If , as it often does, it turns out that the culprits were white the reaction is either to indulge in conspiracies such as the poor white guys are being framed (case in point the white man who drove into the celebrating crowds in Liverpool after the football win, I saw tons of social media posts claiming the white man who appeared in court wasn't the culprit, it was a conspiracy by the police to cover up for the fact it was done by a Muslim terrorist) or you will hear no more about it.

IF (and that’s a big if) these men are claiming refuge here - then I agree. Partaking in a serious crime should mean jail and immediate deportation.

And any laws that prevent this need to be changed so it becomes permissible.

A description is useless but CCTV absolutely should be released.

That’s not why people get angrier if the people are non-nationals.

People are also angrier when they are nationals but non-white. It’s just xenophobia and racism behind the different responses.

Because we never knowingly import rapists. But I do think anybody who moves here and commits such a serious crime should be automatically removed (although I may have a different view fir somebody who arrived as a baby.)

pusspuss9 · 16/04/2026 10:12

but usually of a certain culture that sees women in a different light,

Jess Phillips asserted that the common denominator in the rape gangs scandal was that the perpetrators were men in a vain attempt to cover up the real perpetrators.
Frankly the 'men' comments is just a vain attempt to cover up the real issue which will have to be faced sooner or later.

I do understand where your coming from the procedures for asylum should be strict and functional.
If failed one appeal only in interests of fairness.
No more appeals lasting a decade.
Complete failure =deportation.
Time to smash the myth the UK is the land of milk honey.
