Car Tax and List Price

i brought my car last year new from Ford. At the time I was told the cars price was £42,000 with an extra £667 due to extras.
I was told not to worry about the ‘luxury’ car tax as it was due to change to the threshold of £50k so I brought it.

fast forward to now I’ve just received my V11 and have been hit with the ‘luxury’ tax. I called up the DVLA and asked why as my car was not over the 50k threshold and is electric to be told that Ford have informed them the list price was £50,700.

I contacted Ford this morning who have confirmed that ‘unfortunately’ this is correct and even when I provided all my paperwork and brochures which state the price of the vehicle advertised as under this threshold there is ‘nothing they can do as it’s set by the government’

so what do I do… circumstances have changed since last year (redundancies) and to find another £70 a month is tight. The car is on finance and is our only family vehicle so I would sell it but I won’t recoup the costs if that makes sense.

do I have any case against Ford at all as I don’t understand where a nearly 10k price increase has come from.

AIBU to be upset about this!

You’re at fault here for not doing your own research upon purchase and just taking their word for it. You need to weigh up the difference between the extra 70 a month or selling it at a loss and then make a decision.

Surely before you went to look at the car you looked at the car mags, on line, sales bumf to see how much it cost?

Tell me you didn't just rock up to the dealer and say "i want that one"

Misread the op

The very definition of a first world problem.

I did that’s my point. We had all the online listings and paperwork etc as per my OP at no point does it quote anywhere near 50k. Even now if you google it I can’t see 50k listed anywhere.

It is a really stupid policy, makes no sense to me and DVLA are painfully difficult to work with to resolves issues even when evidence proves they are wrong. Best of luck sorting this out.
