AI is starting to undermine our trust in ourselves.

Some people (how many I wonder?) are starting to use AI to write or to check everything for them. So their thoughts in emails and so on are being expressed by AI rather than directly by them. And AI is doing the research and then summarising it, saving people the time of doing their own online research - and we know that AI comes out with a biased view, due to what's been fed into it. And so on and so on. I see that on Mumsnet AI now suggests a "better" thread title than the one we've chosen for ourselves. Though it's refused to offer a thread title for this thread, which is ominous...

I attach an article about how easy it is to stop trusting yourself do to anything without the assistance of AI. And of course it's worse with children, who haven't even developed their communication skills yet.

Are any of you deliberately limiting your use of AI, and helping your children to do the same? Are our brains (what's left of them after reading social media all evening) going to rot as we hand over more and more tasks to AI, first because it's easier that way, then because we lose our confidence to do the tasks, and then because we're no longer capable of doing them?

I can’t understand why.

It gets so many things wrong, misunderstands linguistic nuances, misattributes sources. I’ve rarely not found errors when I’ve checked.

It is obviously formulaic in its structuring so that it’s easy to spot when it’s been used in writing. It eliminates rhythmic variance and as a result can be difficult to read, especially when it’s not saying anything of substance.

I don’t understand why it has been pitched so hard as “artificial intelligence” - it’s impressive but so are calculators and google, and that talking Pokémon ball my dc loved. It’s very useful in some ways but it’s not what they’re trying to tell us it is.

The early versions learned from the contents of the internet, but now AI is producing more content than humans and current iterations are training on AI content. Sigh.

Yeah I really think it's disastrous for artists and musicians. And basically a lot of the work I used to do (secretarial/admin/reception/office manager/PA/research assistant etc) are all being replaced by AI. I find it quite depressing but it feels like they're trying to force it down out throats.

It's depressing. If we have to have robots forced on us, I want them to be cleaning up the big pile of flytipping at the end of my street, or filling in potholes, not doing the fun things I want to do myself (and get paid for doing).

And?

Do you think chatting to a robot about soap operas is worth destroying the environment even faster than we already were?

I use it, and it works extremely well, for boring, draining tasks that I can do myself but resent having to expend cognitive energy on e.g. composing complicated life admin emails or writing a series of god awful, hoop jumping supporting statements for a job application that I'm certain absolutely no one is actually reading. This frees up a lot of time and energy to use my finite brainpower on things I do actually care about, like reading, studying, creative writing etc. I think, used wisely and with a critical hat on, it's a hugely useful time saving aid
