Skorts - Unisex or Girls Only

DoggyBird · 11/04/2026 20:09

Skorts for kids - some suppliers (like Canterbury) say they are unisex - other suppliers (like Slazenger) say that they are exclusively for girls. Any opinions on this? I say they should be unisex.

Definitely girls.

dementedpixie · 11/04/2026 20:13

Girls

soundof · 11/04/2026 20:16

there are no heterosexual boys wearing skorts.

msmillicentcat · 11/04/2026 20:17

I think a skort should be unisex if skirts are unisex, given they are basically the same thing.

toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 · 11/04/2026 20:18

Well they are for girls aren't they? But nothing stopping boys wearing them if they want to.

greenteaandlimes · 11/04/2026 20:21

Are there boys who want to wear skorts? Obviously they can. But that doesn’t make it a unisex item.

soundof · 11/04/2026 20:22

They are skirts with a bit in the middle to make it easier for girls to be active without showing their underwear. Lets face it, skirts are a bit of a silly design. Therefore they are for the same people as skirts are. Yes males can and do wear skirts, but its not the conventional norm. Whether that matters to an individual boy is up to them, but they're certainly not marketed at boys. And why would a boy bother wearing an essentially compromised design fixed somewhat by the addition of shorts, when he could just wear some shorts? Unless he was making a point of course or pretending he was a girl.

Needspaceforlego · 11/04/2026 20:23

If skirts are feminine then so are skorts a skirt / shorts combo.
Up there with collottes, no manly man is picking them up in Burtons.

angelikacpickles · 11/04/2026 20:24

Does it matter? I can't imagine many boys want to wear them, and if they do, why not?

NotMyRealAccount · 11/04/2026 20:24

Clothes are for anyone and all that, but a boy in a skort is likely to get the sort of teasing that no parent wants for their child.

Trampoline · 11/04/2026 20:26

There are two types of skorts- one which is a skirt with hidden shorts built on - or the other type which looks like shorts at the back and a skirt at the front.

Thefrenchconnection1 · 11/04/2026 20:31

No clothing imo are for boys or girls other than maybe bras and jock straps. Why the restraint on garments unless they have a biological purpose attached?

OneTimeThingToday · 11/04/2026 20:32

My kids school has a "unisex" uniform policy, so technically the boys could chose to wrsr the skirt or the PE skort.

It has never happened. Same as technically the girls can wear grey knee length shorts instead of trousers or skirt.. but you cant buy them anywhere!

audhdandme · 11/04/2026 20:33

You can’t put a boy in a skort ffs

CurlewKate · 11/04/2026 20:35

Clothes are clothes. They aren’t gendered.

Livpool · 11/04/2026 20:35

Girls

Wingingit73 · 11/04/2026 20:40

Traditionaly girls but up to kid and parent. Like all clothes.

WildDenimDuck · 11/04/2026 20:50

They’re for boys just as much as skirts are…..

bunnyvsmonkey · 11/04/2026 20:54

Sporty skorts are quite tight so I'd imagine they're either for girls only or have a baggy bit at the front to accommodate a cock and balls and therefore won't look right on a girl. So no not unisex.

drspouse · 11/04/2026 20:57

There is a boy who was in my DS year at primary school whose mother thought he was a girl. I wasn't sure if they had given up on this notion when he left primary but when I found a request from this mum in a school uniform group for a skort I knew they hadn't.

Thatcannotberight · 11/04/2026 21:10

Slazenger is a British company and Canterbury is based in New Zealand. IYKYK.

WorkCleanRepeat · 11/04/2026 21:14

I have a year 5 boy, neither he or any of his friends would be seen dead in a skort.

Hankunamatata · 11/04/2026 21:17

Def girls. Personally I love a skort. I like being shorts but feel fat and frumpy where skort is more slimming

ModestlyPrudent · 11/04/2026 23:02

They are for anyone who wants to wear them. This is usually girls though.

Such a silly question and no need to start a thread on it.

DoggyBird · 12/04/2026 17:45

Interesting. Thanks for the responses. This was something mentioned at a primary school where I volunteer and the answers were evenly divided as here. What persuade me was the school dress options:

Girls Options:
Girls can wear skirts.
Girls can wear pinafores.
Girls can wear summer dresses.
Girls can wear trousers/shorts

Boys Options:
There are no options. Boys wear trousers/shorts.

Is that equality? Skorts is a great compromise, surely?
