AIBU to notice different standards for JK Rowling and Ye?

Isn't it interesting that the chattering classes, so busy trying to cancel J K Rowling for apparently being a dreadful human being, without a single shred of evidence, were quite happy to buy up to 150, 000 tickets costing from £140 to £280 per day to watch Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, a man who is a self declared racist, misogynist, antisemitic Nazi apologist and Holocaust denier.
One could almost imagine that a man can say and do anything he likes, including stating that he beats women, and still be worshipped whilst a talented writer and humanitarian, who happens to be a woman, is vilified.

Noones standing up for the 'batty old woman'

Whereas if you insult kanye, men will rush to sympathise with and understand him, and take up against you

NotTerfNorCis · 10/04/2026 23:32

The hatred of JK Rowling has been weirdly disproportionate. It's almost certainly driven by misogyny.

If I'm honest I dont always agree with her but even i can see the hate for her is disproportionate. Being even more honest I wasn't at fan long before the trans stuff.

MyLimeGuide · 10/04/2026 23:35

The sort of people that support Kanye are Kanye type of people. JK has her support from JK type of people. Its not hard to see which camp is a more intelligent, eloquent and respected camp to be in.

ThisGreenUser · 10/04/2026 23:36

I don’t think JK has been vilified really.

The one that gets me is Chris Brown, why on earth was he 1- still relevant enough to tour and 2- allowed in the UK!?

GuineaPigWig · 10/04/2026 23:43

I really don’t understand your comparison. Who are these chattering classes that love Kanye yet vilify JKR?

ohwtf · 10/04/2026 23:45

They're both disgusting.

I know a teacher and mother of a teenage girl whi went to see him.
Fuck only knows why.

You think JKR is disgusting?

Interesting take. Care to elaborate?

DrJump · 10/04/2026 23:52

Are they the same people who are buying the tickets and vilifing JK?

diamondradicchio · 10/04/2026 23:54

On what planet are you dwelling?

Victoriawould24 · 10/04/2026 23:55

I suppose KW fans that would see him now if they could would say he has apologised and explained he was in a significant mental health crisis at the time of his vile behaviour and now he is repentant.
Where as JKR does not make reference to her mental health and has not retracted her position on her views.

  • I can’t stand KW btw and am not defending him in any way or accepting of his ‘apology’ , I just don’t think it’s an equal comparison.

Yep the £200m of her own money she’s donated to various charities including helping orphanages, domestic abuse and rape victims and research into neurological conditions is shit isn’t it. What a cow

It's certainly not an equal comparison.

  • One's condoned actual violence and genocide. The other's been falsely accused of doing this.
  • One's indiscriminately condemned all members of demographics based on their race/ethnicity/sex etc. The other's reserved the worst of her ire for individuals who've attacked her in worse ways than her X posts, and taken care to highlight her support at least for parts of the demographic she's supposed to hate.
  • One seems driven purely by the negative emotions of hate and prejudice. The other seems motivated, above whatever else, by a passionate belief in the positive value of upholding women's rights.
  • Above all, one's appropriated mental health conditions to make an unconvincing excuse of an apology, and in so doing has happily undermined efforts to protect yet another vulnerable demographic - those with MH issues. The other, meanwhile, has stood firm in her moral beliefs.

FWIW, while I think JKR's done a huge amount of unrecognised good (ref. eg. extraordinary charitable donations), I do think she goes too far in some her tweets. I really wish she'd "go high" when they "go low" (thanks, Michelle!) - including to prevent misrepresentations of her as straightforwardly hate-filled, bigoted or abusive. It's not always been explicit that her main concern is (I think, anyway) with certain individuals and subsets of those identifying as trans, and some of the unsavoury types piggybacking on trans ideology. Meanwhile, the empathy, care and respect she has shown for some individuals and groups within the trans population have been lost in readers' unquestioning fury.

Does anyone really care about what she has to say other than the Daily Mail commenters? She certainly doesn’t come up in any of my real life conversations or social media algorithms.

The audience at Wireless Festival is not ‘the chattering classes’ whatever the fuck that means. It’s young black Londoners who I suspect couldn’t care less about JK Rowling either way, if they even know who she is.

Victoriawould24 · 11/04/2026 00:39

@CatietteCompletely agree with you about JK , spot on.

MyLuckyHelper · 11/04/2026 00:42

I can’t imagine there are many crossovers between Kanye lovers and JK Rowling haters tbh. Very different demographics I’d have thought

You, affecting to not care about "what she has to say" does not cancel out or lessen the horrendous villification, attacks, and abuse she has endured.

If you mean mine (I'm assuming you do from length, care taken etc.!), I'm still working out whether to find it flattering or infuriating - or just plain worrying - that people don't think actual humans are capable of thinking logically and writing persuasively.

Yeah, I know I'm unusual in posting longer responses and choosing my words carefully. I also know it's not always a strength - I can get a bit obsessive sometimes about getting the right words and tone, and can sound uncharacteristically - if you knew me - smug (also a GPT feature!) But (at risk of said smug tone) please at least consider that Chat GPT's busy stealing from writers like me, thanks very much, and it's not invariably the other way round - we're out there trying to get heard, too 😅.

I try to laugh, but it also demoralises me a bit. I hate posts that use GPT or similar. And I don't just mean the crappy type-a-prompt-and-paste-the-answer (I mean seriously, what's even the point?) It's also those who use it for "research", or "inspiration" or "prompts". It's all cheating to me as long as there's no bibliographic reference or #generatedbyAI sat at the base. So, yeah, it's bad enough to see these, but I think may feel even worse to give a shit about writing well with clear, fluent writing of your own only to be confused with a bloody robot. 😩

I mean, talk about the destruction of human creativity, thought and meaningful debate.

(Sorry, rant over. 2nd GPT accusation in a few days. Trying hard not to conclude that it's time for me to get a bit swearier, add in some bad punc. and skip the rhetoric).

Catiette · 11/04/2026 01:48

Writing while waiting for Artemis to get out of the capsule. Is anyone else watching? I want to go to BED, but having got this far, feel like I'm got to see them emerge. Can't believe that after all that, the onboard phones went down and delayed everything.

Catiette · 11/04/2026 01:49

Come onnnnnn!!!

Ahem.

Catiette · 11/04/2026 01:53

Btw, rereading while waiting to be fair to you... I acually can see GPT-style horror-blandness in the opening of mine above at least. Heck. I need to look out for that, don't I!
