If you could choose one artwork to own, what would it be?

With the following caveat, you must select one that you love, rather than for its worth etc.

At the moment, I would choose “Sketch of a Seated Cat” by Gwen John. ❤️

The light of the world

Beautiful, I have always loved Margaret Tarrant's religious paintings, my mother had reproductions of them up when I was a child and they immediately transport me back to less complicated times.

I would like to have the Lesser Brethren to give to her.

The Execution of Lady Jane Grey

That’s another one of my favourites. In fact, I’ll be seeing it in person soon!

What a great thread! I'd forgotten so many of these great artists- especially Gwen John

So many, I couldn’t choose! But I’ve just been to the Gwen John show in Cardiff and she’s fresh in my mind, so I’ll go for her studies of people in church.
I loved them all, so have picked one fairly arbitrarily.
Gwen John

I went to Cardiff Museum recently, but couldn’t justify paying £14 each to see the Gwen John exhibit.

I’ll go when I get paid next month though. I’m desperate to see it!

I fell in love with Fabian Perez Dancer In Red and White and spent ages trying to source it. It is now hanging above my bed since I shipped it in from the US about 10 years ago. I think it is beautiful.
(I hope the image attaches)

Oh my. That is stunning.

If you've got Art Fund, it's free.

EBearhug · 11/04/2026 19:38

I've already got my painting, but when I was very small, we had a poster of Lucy Kemp-Welch's work on our bedroom wall (and I now have it in postcard form at my desk at work.)

The Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymus Bosch. I saw it in the Prado many years ago and was in awe. I could easily have spent the whole day taking in all the detail but the Goya Black period exhibition was calling my name (and was amazing, in a very dark way)

I'm thinking William Holman Hunt

I haven’t got that, I’m afraid. Just had a look online and it’s awfully expensive.

I’m not going to name it because if someone in my family saw it, outing would be immediate.

there was a piece of art in my childhood bedroom. I never thought much of it. We had tons of art in the house because my father was a student artist at one point. It was of varying quality, but I loved this piece. One day I saw it as the post of the day on an art focused channel on Instagram. I was perplexed. It was 100% the painting from my childhood bedroom.

it turns out that my father had purchased it from a reasonably famous artist at the start of her career for the cash he had in his pocket. He sold it when he moved house.

its probably better that it is in an art gallery for other people to enjoy, but I kind of want my childhood painting back. I don’t care about the value, I just really loved the painting.

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 11/04/2026 19:44

Anything by Bridget Riley.

Death of Ophelia by Sir John Everett Millais- absolute gothic masterpiece!!!

It would be my choice too

I’m dying to know what the painting is!

I know it won’t be the same, but I wonder if getting a print of it could be an option for you?

Just to add, no @BeLimeTiger you can't have Verity. She lives just minutes away from me and I won't let you take her, although I know many around here would be delighted if you did. She remains highly controversial in these parts.

I'm interested to ask people that have chosen this painting, would you just like to own it or could you live with it.

It's just so heartbreakingly sad (and beautiful) that I couldn't look on it every day.

Richard Dadd's The Halt in the Desert

Saw it on Antiques Roadshow years ago and fell in love.

It was valued at 100k then (1986, apparently) so I knew it was hopeless

I'm jealous of the people that have nabbed this. It would look great in my little terrace and would be interesting forever.

Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose

John Singer Sargent

I find this painting so unbelievably moving; there’s something almost sacral, ritual about the act of lighting the lanterns. It’s so intensely atmospheric and sensory. Thanks for reminding of it!

Aah, The Dreamers. My friend and I call this "The Opium Party" 🥳

I am one of three sisters and it reminds me of the times the three of us would relax together. We could all zone out much to the annoyance of our DM. It’s the thousand mild stare and resting your eyes moment.

EBearhug · 11/04/2026 20:06

I do own some actual artworks, just not very expensive ones.

It's absolutely massive. I'm not sure your "little terrace" would be able to cope unless you removed every inner wall, but it might be worth it. Although if you separated the 3 parts it might fit on 3 walls.

Also Caravaggio’s The Entombment of Christ. Saw the original in the art gallery of the Vatican - mesmerising, I must have spent half an hour staring at it before DH practically dragged me away encouraged me to move on.
Luckily it was a quiet morning …

^^This. I was lucky enough to get a completely private viewing of St John The Baptist as a young man by Caravaggio I just loved it.
Or anything by Cezanne the father of 20th century art.
