to think it’s time to ban dogs from shops and cafes?

I’ve just read a BBC article about the increase in dog attacks in the UK.

Dogs seem to be everywhere now. Cafes, shops, even places where food is being served. I’m not anti-dog at all, but I don’t really want to be eating or shopping surrounded by them.

It’s not just about preference either. Some people are allergic, some are genuinely scared, and others just don’t want to deal with barking, smells or dogs getting under their feet. The BBC piece even mentioned people feeling like they have to avoid going out because dogs are everywhere now.

I also don’t really get how it’s hygienic in places serving food. I know people say “well-behaved dogs are fine” but not all dogs are well-behaved, and staff aren’t exactly going to challenge every owner.

Before anyone says it, yes obviously assistance dogs are different and should be allowed. That’s not what I mean.

I just feel like we’ve swung too far the other way where dog owners expect to take them absolutely everywhere, and everyone else just has to put up with it.

Surely it’s not unreasonable to have more dog-free indoor spaces again?

Well when I choose to take my dog to a public place I never leave him outside. If he cannot go into a place then I don't go into it either. No way on earth am I going to leave him outside for some arsehole to steal, kick or whatever. Far too many lunatics about

My thoughts exactly. That’s why we should be campaigning to allow dogs everywhere as it is discrimation against single people with dogs otherwise. I can’t go in a supermarket when I’m out with my dog on my own as I won’t leave her outside.

All the people who hate these dog posts, why keep joining in?

Because they take their dogs in cafes and feel like they have to justify it.
Also can't bear to think someone might not want their dog near them.
Have you seen the reactions when you ask them to get their dog away from you?

I don’t need to justify it to anyone here. If it’s allowed it’s allowed. 🤷‍♀️

I also don’t care if people don’t want my dog near them. I don’t let my dog go up to people or encroach on their table. What’s happening at my table is nothing to do with them. Any dog germs aren’t going to fly over to them anymore than a germ off someone’s shoe is. My dog doesn’t bark.

If anything I’m fed up with the none dog owners coming and asking to stroke my dog. I always smile and let them, especially if it’s kids. Because I’m nice like that.

What is whinny about it?

If it so boring, don't join in.

It’s kind of the epitome of whining and entitlement. Oh no, you don’t like what the owner of a business chooses to do with their own business 😆

Same.
If a kid came up and asked to say hi to my dog, then that was a lovely bit of interaction and I enjoyed it, as did my dog.

But I don't get the impression that anyone with a dog is sat there giving eyes to everyone and getting pissed off that they don't want to say hi to their dog. Like you said, we preferred it they didn't. I just wanted to sit and chill with a coffee, and my dog at my feet.

Then plan to go when your dog isn’t with you, or get food delivered.

Discrimination FFS.

If it’s a business decision to allow dogs, it’s a business decision not to allow dogs. Suck it up.

Our local and two of the cafes we visit have banned dogs after pissing / shitting incidents and general untruliness of dogs caused by couldn't care less owners so yes, there are incidents, the tide is turning in some places.
And for the poster who mentioned dog theft if they were to leave their dog tied up outside then here's an idea. LEAVE IT AT HOME

I took my Ddog on holiday with me. I had no choice but to take her into places with me.

Onleemoi · 10/04/2026 20:41

I’ll take my dog places he’s allowed as long as he’s allowed. If things change then so be it. I won’t be whinging on here week in and week out because some places don’t run according to my preferences.

That's different, this is mainly about owners who take their dog on every outing every week and don't get me wrong, I am a dog lover and yes, there are responsible owners but it's the irresponsible owners that cause the problems, maybe it's because when I grew up we left our dog at home when we went out. Suddenly dogs have become incapable of being left alone for a couple of hours.

It’s likely that more places will allow dogs in the future rather than less.

Yep. If I went to a place and they said no to dogs, then I go elsewhere.
On MN, someone who hates dogs goes to a place that allows dogs, and they have a toddler level tantrum and expect a private business to bend to their will.

Seeing the opposite round here. Places increasingly turning doggy friendly and those that already were upping facilities- individual
bowls of water and even doggy menus .

Funny,we use dog friendly cafes and restaurants a lot and have never witnessed pissing/ shitting incidents or unruly dogs. Not seeing any change policy either.

Taking a dog to a cafe once a week is hardly a big deal is it.

They also think because they saw a dog in a cafe once it never stays at home or goes anywhere else.

It is if the owner can't control it. We avoid cafes with dogs now so no business for them from us.

However will they cope?

Dogs don't live long enough. I cherished every moment in a cafe I spent with her.

Worry not there will be multiple dog owners in your place, hence the owner deciding to be dog friendly, as is their right.

I had a dog that used to pull us to the pub on walks but only after 12.00. How did he know when opening time was?

I still miss him every day so I completely understand how you feel.

I don't want to leave my dog at home thank you and now so many places allow him in I don't have to.

Me and DH have had dogs for over 40 years and for most of that time, apart from when we lived in France, we have had to sit outside with him if we wanted to eat even if it was pouring with rain or freezing cold. We could not take him to hotels because none accepted them (again in France they did). When we went on holiday with our dog we were not going to leave them alone in the accommodation so we always had to sit outside and eat and some places (Wetherspoons being one) didn't and still do not allow dogs even in the garden.

Also our present dog is a rescue and when we got him last year he was very stressed and anxious and just could not be left as he would cry and howl and pace the room. Were we meant to just leave him when he was that upset? So we took him out with us. Now he can be left although we would never leave him more than 3 or, at the most, 4 hours and not on a regular basis. If we want to go out for the day maybe to the coast or anywhere a bit of a distance from home we take him and we will want to eat and drink while we are out so we go to dog friendly places.

Can’t stand that there are dogs absolutely everywhere nowadays. They should be tied up outside. Everyone has to own a dog these days.

Do you have a dog, your Excellency?
