to think it’s time to ban dogs from shops and cafes?

I’ve just read a BBC article about the increase in dog attacks in the UK.

Dogs seem to be everywhere now. Cafes, shops, even places where food is being served. I’m not anti-dog at all, but I don’t really want to be eating or shopping surrounded by them.

It’s not just about preference either. Some people are allergic, some are genuinely scared, and others just don’t want to deal with barking, smells or dogs getting under their feet. The BBC piece even mentioned people feeling like they have to avoid going out because dogs are everywhere now.

I also don’t really get how it’s hygienic in places serving food. I know people say “well-behaved dogs are fine” but not all dogs are well-behaved, and staff aren’t exactly going to challenge every owner.

Before anyone says it, yes obviously assistance dogs are different and should be allowed. That’s not what I mean.

I just feel like we’ve swung too far the other way where dog owners expect to take them absolutely everywhere, and everyone else just has to put up with it.

Surely it’s not unreasonable to have more dog-free indoor spaces again?

Is it partly because people don’t want to leave dogs tied up outside anymore? Fear of dognapping?

Exactly this. It makes me so angry when i see owners tie them up outside.

So many stolen sweet natured pets being used as warm up bait for fighting dog rings. Could cry thinking about it. It happens. Probably happening right now. Fucking awful.

Never ever leave your dog tied up outside a shop/cafe.

I guess leave it in the car / home or coin-operated cages perhaps could work.

No, my lovely dog lies under the table, good as gold. We are usually stopping in the middle of a walk so she knows it her time to rest while we eat and then we carry on our outing. We often get told that people didn’t even realise she was there til we get up to leave.

There's no need because so many places are dog friendly now.

Same. My dog was settled on her mat on the floor.

Good solution - the people who don’t like dogs can stay in the car or a coin-operated cage. Problem solved

Do the cages mean the children leave you alone as well. Asking for a friend 😂😂😂

The vast majority of places you can’t take dogs to. That’s still the case. So Yabu imo.

This^ as a dog owner I always had to research where was actually dog friendly and where really only meant dogs could sit outside. When you're away for the day with your dog I'm not sure what people expect you to do when you need to eat, especially if on holiday.

It means you may need to do a bit more research on where is definitely not dog friendly but that's no different than what dog owners are doing. What you're really saying is that you feel EVERYWHERE should cater to your preference. I think some places should cater to different (dog friendly) preferences. You take your business where it suits as would I.

It is the height of entitlement to presume everywhere should only cater to you. It's just as bad as a dog owner demanding to take their dog in everywhere.

Is this a joke? Absolutely no reason you can think of why you might not want to leave a dog in a car on a warm day? Or in a cage?

I was on holiday last week and there were dogs absolutely EVERYWHERE - cafes, indoor shopping centre, beauty spots.
Why on earth ( apart from assistance dogs) do you need to take a dog to a shopping centre?
Fed up of dogs sniffing around my food and barking at each other or fighting.

It's become ridiculous. I don't bring my cat out with me.

You were on holiday, in, I would wager, a holiday resort, or a place with other holidaymakers. The majority of dog owners take their dogs on holiday with them, after all, they're part of the family. Most, if not all, holiday lets, caravans, and even campsites where people have their own tents, vans, motorhomes, etc specify that dogs must not be left alone. Therefore, if those people want to go out anywhere, the dog goes with them.
We didn't rescue our dog from an awful life, just to put her back behind bars, in kennels, when it suits us. She'd be terrified. We still find there's quite a few places we can't take her. We don't mind, we just move on. You mention your cat. Completely different scenario, and not worth mentioning in the context of this post tbh

Also cages I know I know. But good for storing husbands while shopping 😏😏

Funny,we use dog friendly cafes and restaurants a lot and have never witnessed pissing/ shitting incidents or unruly dogs. Not seeing any change policy either

I've seen a dog shit in a garden centre and another dog shit in a shop.
It's pretty vile.

I have seen several mums change nappies on tables in Costa.

I agree this is a country over run by dogs, not a dog person but... in fairness a lot of humans aren't that pleasant! So I can sort of understand why more and more humans are choosing animal company over human??

Times are a-changing. Mark my words, the doggie revolution is coming

I find this really offensive.

(That you used only two poodles in the revolution march. )

They allow dogs in my local John Lewis. I have yet to see any bull breeds in there biting peoples’ faces off.

You get a nicer class of dog in John Lewis.

MyLuckyHelper · 10/04/2026 21:55

I’m always confused by the “some people are allergic” line, often followed by “assistance dogs are different obviously”.

allergies have no idea if your dog is employed or unemployed.

I’m going to sound horrible but I can’t say I’ve seen anyone who looks like they would shop in John Lewis own a bull type breed.

There was a comment on yet another dog thread, where someone was on a bus/train. Her dog was under the seat and no one noticed it.
After a two hour journey, she got up with her dog and the lady opposite suddenly gasped and said the dog set off her allergies.
Now tell me what sort of allergies are only triggered when you notice your trigger.

My neighbours have an English bull terrier and shop exclusively at Waitrose. I’ll let them know they’re really only meant to shop at Asda shall I?
