I know I’ll get slated as the origin is the daily fail but, but this kind of annoys me too! I mean as a single parent I don’t want to pay £60 to go to the zoo either.

Benefit-claiming families pay just £4 for top UK attractions

More than 80 attractions give discounts to benefit claimants, with MPs reacting furiously with one saying the system created a 'two-tier system that punishes work'.

There has already been a long thread about this.

BIWI · 10/04/2026 10:03

Again?

BIWI · 10/04/2026 10:03

Oh, and yes, YABU.

Sheldonsheher · 10/04/2026 10:04

Ok I didn’t know there was one is there a link then?

Yes, you are.

Snorlaxo · 10/04/2026 10:05

I got an online social media ad from Robert Jenrick (Reform) on this. I suspect it’s because I read the thread on here about it.

elliejjtiny · 10/04/2026 10:05

Yabu. It's not for the parents, it's for the children. I just wish we lived near any of these places because even with the discount the cost of travel makes it unaffordable.

ASimpleLampoon · 10/04/2026 10:06

So don't go.

complain to the Zoo for charging stupid fees.
did you know carers go FREE. If you're jealous maybe break your child's legs so they can be disabled too and get all the freebies. It's such a great ride!

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 10/04/2026 10:07

YANBU. A 20% discount reasonable, but getting in for £1 is a smack in the guts to those of us that have to pay full whack.

beguilingeyes · 10/04/2026 10:07

Robert Jenrick is a vile man. I think a good rule of thumb is that if he disapproves of something it's probably something to support.

Itchthescratch · 10/04/2026 10:07

There are loads of threads about lots of topics however the MN 'benefit bashing' police like to come on to threads like this and tell everyone that we either can't discuss this issue at all or that because it's been discussed once then it can't ever be discussed again.

Also note that the majority of people that post will try to shame you for even asking the question but the poll is more likely to reflect actual public opinion.

youalright · 10/04/2026 10:07

Ffs we have just done this they are private businesses they can give discounts to whoever they want whether that is people on uc, blue light card discounts, pensioner discounts, student discounts, large group discounts. It is nothing to do with the government or anyone else

ThejoyofNC · 10/04/2026 10:09

YANBU it's a joke.

The other thread ended at 8.22am do we really need the exact same thread an hour and a half later

If you mean me, I was just pointing out there is an existing 20 page thread that only closed this morning. If people want to thrash it out all over again, that's up to them.

Yawn.

Complain to the venues involved then. Or boycott them. Whinging on MN won't achieve anything.

Sheldonsheher · 10/04/2026 10:14

Apologies I didn’t know or I might have just read that. I was just considering what to do in the holidays and was annoyed how everything is so expensive now it puts you off going and saw this. Where I live every thing seems to be free for UC etc JSA.

YANBU it's a joke.

Is the joke that museums/zoos etc should only be accessible by the financially comfortable? Or that prices are too high in general, or that people claiming state assistance shouldn't get any help?

weareallqueens · 10/04/2026 10:16

I don’t particularly care if YABU or not, but you feel exactly the way the Daily Mail want you to feel, so someone has won here. Not sure it’s either you or those who are getting the discounted trips though.

It's not just you. Look at the posts saying 'this has been done', 'yawn' and 'again'.

The fact the previous thread filled up so quickly and ended with a pretty much 50:50 split in opinion shows that people feel strongly about this and there is more to be discussed. Some are desperate to shut down debate and to leave the current status quo probably to protect their own interests in lots of cases. If you are currently benefiting from all of this, it is likely that you will be opposed to change.

Everything? I doubt it.

Everanewbie · 10/04/2026 10:21

I'd have it the other way around. Those that earn their own money get a rate that reflects the income tax they pay. £8 for workers (assuming BRT), £10 for claimants.

Itchthescratch · 10/04/2026 10:21

PandoraSocks · 10/04/2026 10:14

Of course 'whinging on MN' can achieve things. How is public opinion influenced? Through many channels but it is undoubtedly true that MN can increase visibility of issues and bring about change. Lots of people don't realise that benefit claimants get such a huge discount and other advantages.

Personally I have first hand experience of MN influencing my opinion on trans issues and I know I'm not the only one. I simply wasn't aware of what was going on and was shocked when I read threads on the issue. I believe these kinds of threads raise awareness around the unfairness regarding relatively low earners that don't claim benefits and can't access these additional advantages and those that claim and can.
