AIBU to cut my own hair instead of going to the salon

I hate the salon - does anyone else on here cut their own hair or is this a mad thing to do?

I cut my own hair. My hair is long and curly and I used to go to a curly hair specialist but she no longer works close enough to me.

I bought some hairdressing scissors and I do the ‘butterfly’ cut (which gives long layers) every few weeks. It looks perfectly fine and I’m wondering why I used to spaff £170 on every trim. Having said that, curly hair is much easier to cut than straight. I don’t think I’d attempt to cut straight hair.

What's your technique, please? I just googled this and think it's what I achieve, but I would be glad to improve my technique.

I cut mine! I think it’s important to have proper hair cutting scissors and watch a lot of YouTube videos and only take a bit off at a time. I have long curly hair. I also now cut DS’s and DP’s hair with clippers (and the front of DS’s with scissors including layering it). Saves a fortune!

I've been cutting my own hair for a decade. When I was growing up, in my group, we didn't go to salons, they were financially out of reach. For about 15 years of my adulthood I went to salons, hated every one, every time. I tried an at home person, still disliked the result. I can do a much better job and I don't get all the added irritation and expense. I get compliments, and that's nice, but I was confident about my rationale for doing it, so the compliments are added extras.

nothingcangowrongnow · 11/04/2026 10:19

I would do a fringe but not my own hair. If I had really long hair, I might ask a friend or partner to trim it

Riapia · 11/04/2026 10:20

Does anyone remember the MN cutting method. It was popular a few years ago. Can’t remember the method now.

Mischance · 11/04/2026 10:21

I always cut my late OH's so started doing mine.

I have a long bob. I divide the hair in two at the back and bring it round to the sides and create bunches. I then slide the bands down to the length I want my hair, check they are both at the same level and chop off the bit below the bands.

Job done!

dudsville · 11/04/2026 10:23

@Fimofriend , oh god, that thinning, I'd forgotten about that. I have naturally voluminous hair and I'm very happy with that, why take it upon yourself to assume that thinning it is something I would want? And the impact was that those hairs would then get all frizzy, so it immediately looked awful after the first wash.

MargoChanningsglass · 11/04/2026 10:26

Yeh ive cut my own hair for years after trying many hairdressers. Ive weird hair that looks inches longer when wet so no matter how many times I say please dont take too much off it bounces up, they always did. Dry cuts were no better.

Its shoulder length and wavy so if its not perfect its not noticeable.

ThirdStorm · 11/04/2026 10:30

I switched to cutting my own hair in the past few months. It’s long and I just trim the ends. I was finding going to the salon a chore, I never had my hair washed as my scalp is sensitive to some products and honestly I never enjoyed it, and it took my hair dresser 8 mins to trim my ends for £32. Whilst she’s obviously skilled in her profession which is what I’m paying for I couldn’t justify it anymore. I can now trim as often as I want!

BauhausOfEliott · 11/04/2026 10:31

I think it depends on your hair and the style you want.

I won’t be cutting my own hair any time soon. I’ve got a short cut that takes a lot of skill to do and it would not be easy to hide a mistake.

If you’ve got long hair and you just want to snip the ends off, though, it probably works fine.

I have met two people who were very proud of cutting their own hair and how it was just as good as going to a salon… and in my opinion their hair looked absolutely terrible. On the other hand, my sister trims hers herself and it always seems to look really good.

Hadenough32 · 11/04/2026 10:32

Hairdresser gives me anxiety.. i have thin straight Hair. I just get my partner or family members when they visit to cut it for me a few times a year.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 11/04/2026 10:32

I tried it once, there was a trend on here about a decade ago, never again.
If you think you can, then do it.

mixedcereal · 11/04/2026 10:33

I used to cut my own hair, long and wavy. If you have longer hair and it’s not dead straight it’s pretty forgiving. Look at the bunches trick on YouTube, makes it much easier

Rizzz · 11/04/2026 10:34

I also hate going to the salon so I just get a wet cut.

In and out in about half an hour.

I'm not keen on the dentist either but there you are.

Innermagnolia · 11/04/2026 10:36

Good for you OP!
I cut my own hair for years, finding it best to trim every month on dry hair and take a little off at a time. My hair is also long and curly and I didn’t like how hairdressers were always wanting to “take the weight out”. In other words, thin it and leave the curls fractured and difficult to manage! Some can’t seem to help themselves with taking too much off either.

GrrrrEnergy · 11/04/2026 10:37

I cut my own hair. It's very long, almost down to my butt. I wouldn't cut it myself if I wanted a specific style though. When I was a teen I cut layers into my hair and accidentally gave myself a mullet. My hair was bright purple and it somehow worked but I learnt my lesson - if doing it yourself keep it basic and if you want something specific then get a professional to do it!

martha79 · 11/04/2026 10:38

I've been cutting (and colouring) my own for 20 years, everything from a trim and fringe when I had long straight hair to a skinhead in lockdown. Just this week I've cut it from a bob into a pixie cut. It isn't always perfect but I've come to the conclusion that other people are looking at our hair as closely as we might think they are!

I started for cost reasons but also find the salon a complete sensory overload and have no desire to go back.

Yes, the thinning obsession. I did once have a hairdresser who knew how to thin it out without the God awful thinning shears that left me with split ends. My hair is coarse enough already, thank you.

Part of the problem, TBF, though, was after years of my mother instilling in me a belief that my thick, coarse, wavy hair wasn't 'good', instilled a belief that I needed to work against it, instead of with it. So in all fairness, sometimes I wanted a 'look' that required the type of hair I simply haven't got.

Over the years I have learnt, and now know what I need to ask for to ensure any cut I have is working with what I have got, not against it. The trend for iron-straight, silky hair hasn't helped, since hairdressers assume you want a straighten, but I have now found one who doesn't look at me like I have two heads for not wanting that. I have got long hair, cut my own fringe and go every six months, because I know she'll do what I ask.

I often thought I should have gone into hairdressing, and specialised in my type of hair, because so few hairdressers know what to do with thick, coarse, wavy hair.

I too cut my own hair or DH does (I have been asked which hairdresser i go to as its so good when he does it).

I hate the faff on of the hairdressers when I think about how much I used to pay for a trim as I have long very straight hair, even a trim of a fringe was around £7 takes less than a min. This from someone who used to pay a fortune for Redkin perms in the 80's.

I have experimented with unicorn cut, which I quite liked then grew it out, so I just trim every other week with a pair of proper scissors.

Thankfully I am a natural blonde so don't have to pay out for colour either, but DH does ask each and every time I sit in the kitchen chair for a cut, you going anywhere on your holiday?

😂
Love it.

HaroldMeaker · 11/04/2026 10:48

I cut my own hair. I never really like how the hairdressers do it, and I’m pretty good at it tbh

outerspacepotato · 11/04/2026 10:57

I've cut my own hair and my kids' for years. I can do a lot from trims to bobs and layers and shags. I took a razor cutting course a few years back, it was fun. I have long hair with some face framing layers now.

Ohhhwell · 11/04/2026 11:15

Ive always cut my own hair.
The last time I went to an hairdressers I never got what I asked for.

I came out with a shaved head and a bit of hair on top not what I wanted.
So got home and shaved it completely off.

Cut my own hair ever since.

Disturbia81 · 11/04/2026 11:16

I wear mine long and wavy so I’ve always cut it, if I wore it straight I wouldn’t.

Ohhhwell · 11/04/2026 11:20

Hairdressers/salon are over priced, too chatty and never get what you ask for.

GentleSheep · 11/04/2026 11:20

I've been cutting my hair at home for years. Looks fine. I have shoulder length fairly straight hair so it's not difficult. I was always impressed with my mother who had to give up going to the salon when she got into financial difficulties. She had short wavy grey hair and honestly, she did a fantastic job. I asked her how she managed to cut it so well she said it was years of watching a hairdresser do it! Fortunately my hair is a good deal easier to do!
