AIBU to cut my own hair instead of going to the salon

I hate the salon - does anyone else on here cut their own hair or is this a mad thing to do?

It's pretty mad. Get a professional to cut your hair at home.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 10/04/2026 08:55

Well it’s your hair so do what you want. I don’t like doing to the hairdressers though and I don’t want to spend loads of money on it, but I also don’t want to look like I cut my own hair (not a good look), so I get dry trims unless I want something big doing. Quick and cheaper

PinkyFlamingo · 10/04/2026 08:55

Why on earth would you cut your own hair, you can't even reach round the back! If you hate the salon just get someone to come to your house

igotbills · 10/04/2026 08:59

I do this, I have long wavy hair which is very forgiving when cutting yourself

Started because I'm so tired of the hairdressers agreeing we'll only take 3 inches off, for them to take 7

Just make sure you buy proper hair salon scissors and look after them (keep them dry, sharpened and replace when needed) or else you're at risk of giving yourself split ends

AsparagusSeason · 10/04/2026 09:02

I cut my own hair. My hair is long and curly and I used to go to a curly hair specialist but she no longer works close enough to me.

I bought some hairdressing scissors and I do the ‘butterfly’ cut (which gives long layers) every few weeks. It looks perfectly fine and I’m wondering why I used to spaff £170 on every trim. Having said that, curly hair is much easier to cut than straight. I don’t think I’d attempt to cut straight hair.

Endofyear · 10/04/2026 09:03

I do - I just chop a bit off the ends when it gets too long! I nearly always wear it up in a ponytail so don't think it really matters. I hate going to the hairdressers and haven't been since before the pandemic!

pasturesgreen · 10/04/2026 09:03

It's your hair, so not unreasonable to do what you want with it.
Just bear in mind it'll likely be more expensive and more time consuming to then go to a professional to try and sort out a botched job.

Huppy · 10/04/2026 09:04

I also hate going to the hairdressers and usually cut my own hair. Similar to a PP, mine is long, thick and wavy so very forgiving.

CharSiu · 10/04/2026 09:04

My DS started cutting both DH and mines hair in lockdown. I have gone to the hairdressers again but he still cuts it just as much and does a very good job. If you can cut it and it look ok then I say that’s fine. It saves me £28 a time he does it, we did buy decent hairdressing scissors in lockdown , I think they were £50.

Sa11yCinnamon · 10/04/2026 09:05

It totally depends on your style. If it’s really long or curly it’s probably doable. I do my own fringe (which is obviously much easier than a whole haircut).

I've cut my own many times - it's fine. During lockdown I had positive compliments on it Grin

It's not that hard - and lots of people do it.

Walkthelakes · 10/04/2026 09:07

I have a lady come to my house and do a wet cut. It’s £12 and she does a great job and takes about 15 minutes.

😅😂

I don't think it would be 'more expensive' or 'more time-consuming' - how on earth do you arrive at that conclusion?

It's just hair.

HotChocolateBubbleBath · 10/04/2026 09:10

I cut my own hair, have done for years. If there was such a thing as a silent hairdresser in my area I might go but I doubt it now. I just get my daughter to check there’s no long bits round the back and I’m good to go. Thick curly hair, so very forgiving.

aterriblefish · 10/04/2026 09:12

I cut my own hair and it's layered and shoulder length. Started in lockdown - there are many you-tube videos showing you how. I also bought proper hairdresser's scissors. I also hate going to the salon.

Oioiqueen · 10/04/2026 09:14

Not mad at all. Mine used to be ridiculously thick though so I always needed someone to give it a good thin out three times a year. Now it's thinned from chemotherapy and I just use a no 4 shaver on it.

ohwtf · 10/04/2026 09:16

I've cut my own for years.

DoYouSellBuckets · 10/04/2026 09:19

I have completely (irritatingly) straight hair. Even at Supercuts a trim is £30 for a 2 minute trim. Most of the time I get my (admittedly arty) partner to cut it with a pair of hairdressing scissors in a straight line. If I wanted a new haircut, I'd go but I got to the point where I realised he does just as good a job even if it takes 10 mins instead of 2

FourSevenThree · 10/04/2026 09:25

Depends on your hair style of course.

Long and curly - buy good scissors and that's it. Shirt pixie bob - not really.

Another long and curly home-cutter here. The hairdressers somehow always seemed to try to do things we haven't agreed on at the beginning. I don't want any extra "style" suggestions in the middle of the cut.

Squirrelsnut · 10/04/2026 09:25

There are loads of tutorials online. I've trimmed mine loads of times, it's simple.
I wouldn't if you have a complex style though.

ShetlandishMum · 10/04/2026 09:29

I do my own. No one ever noticed.

KeeepWalking · 10/04/2026 09:35

I've cut my own hair since lockdown. It's very short so i use clippers at the back and sides and thinning scissors on top. Took a few goes to get it right (but it was lockdown so didn't matter anyway, plus I'm not at all precious about my hair) and I watched a few youtubes before trying.

Notanotherpairofsocks · 10/04/2026 09:35

I too cut my own hair or DH does (I have been asked which hairdresser i go to as its so good when he does it).

I hate the faff on of the hairdressers when I think about how much I used to pay for a trim as I have long very straight hair, even a trim of a fringe was around £7 takes less than a min. This from someone who used to pay a fortune for Redkin perms in the 80's.

I have experimented with unicorn cut, which I quite liked then grew it out, so I just trim every other week with a pair of proper scissors.

Thankfully I am a natural blonde so don't have to pay out for colour either, but DH does ask each and every time I sit in the kitchen chair for a cut, you going anywhere on your holiday?

Fimofriend · 10/04/2026 09:38

I have long wavy hair and cut it myself.

I have had hair dressers who took advantage of my bad eyesight who took 15 or 20 inches of my hair instead of the agreed upon 2 inches. Yes, this has happened more than once. Hair dressers who have thinned.my big luscious hair so that it looked like I had chemo. Again more than once, different hair dressers. Definitely not something I had asked them to do and if people actually have thin hair the hair dressers criticise that and do everything to make it look fuller, so what the actual hell? Someone who dyed my hair in darker colour than agreed upon. Highlights that were blond instead of red as we agreed upon. A hair dresser who slapped my head into the sides of the sink, and claimed to have aimed to give me wavy hair ( which I already had) instead if curls as we had agreed upon.

My hair looks great when I cut it myself but coming out of a salon .... eh not so much. I have had good hair dressers but then they go on maternity leave and don't come back or get more customers and up their price to ridiculous amounts. I really don't think that it is ok, to pay approx. £ 200 for a hair cut and a dye job.

Velvetgoldmine · 11/04/2026 10:08

Interesting to see the opinions. in fact I have been cutting my own hair for years - I was rarely happy with the results of a hairdresser cutting it and the only times I was happy it was prohibitively expensive so I taught myself to do it. I did it in gradual steps, first a trim on long curly hair then more styling, layers etc. I am now confident enough to do it all alone. It is currently a chin length layered bob which is easy to maintain and requires a minimal amount of daily styling. I couldn't justify the expense of six weekly salon visits and I hate the experience anyway, it always feels like such a waste of time to be sitting there for so long. Thanks again for all the opinions - it's nice to see I am not the only one!
