Man jailed for stealing handbag that contained £2.2m Fabergé egg - BBC News

To wonder why anyone would take a Fabergé egg with them to the pub? Obviously it was a horrendous crime for the man to take the bag and he deserves to go to prison, but what would possess someone to take a bag containing such a valuable artifact to a pub, in Soho no less?

😂😂😂

It's ridiculous, but I love it!

Me too. DH jokes with me about the fact that when I choose a program on TV, all the commercials are for mobility devices, walk-in baths, funeral providers, and adult-only cruises. I mean, I may seem a WEE bit younger than their target audience, but dude, I need three out of those four things (ha! You’ll have to guess which), so I feel I’m amongst my people, all of us watching ITV3 where they refer to advertising at 9pm as “supporting ITV3 Late Night.”

Bunnyfuller1 · 11/04/2026 00:47

It’s the other stuff that gives it away as an insurance fraud -£350 gift card?! Come on!

GetOffTheCounter · 11/04/2026 07:47

Well, if anything this thread has done- it's made me want to watch Vera.

If my employer asked me to transport this item of £2.2m after an event I would expect them to provide the safe and secure transport of me and it. I would refuse if they didn't.

I would also say "no thanks, maybe another time! Need to get this thing back to museum/whatever!" to pub drinks after the event.

Monumentally stupid.

Bertiebiscuit · 11/04/2026 08:28

Really makes you wonder about the lives some people live - carting around a 2 million pound article in your handbag and casually putting it down where someone can just take it? Really? Really?

I’m amazed she kept her job.

Seeing it on the news earlier my adult kids were all debating if he’d been stitched up - get the petty criminal to steal the bag with no idea as to the true value and then live on the money for the faberge stuff while he carries the can. I can’t say I blame them for wondering!

Hard agree, the whole thing has a stinky vibe, some kind of fraud going on, nobody sane would go to a pub with this in their handbag, it's literally unbelievable. Insurance scam?

I know! Who the hell has 2m golden diamond encrusted egg in their handbag, then get distracted by a pub on the way home, pop out for a cig, get completely lost in thought and boom, next thing you know the bag is gone! Like if I was carrying that in my bag I'd take an uber or probably even a black cab, talking with someone constantly on the phone so that they know mine and the egg's exact and realtime whereabouts, clutching the bag for my dear life, until I get it home safe. Hell, I'd put an airtag on it, and all. If someone was so crazy that they'd just let a random woman carry it around in their handbag, that is. How, just how, was she so blasé about it that she randomly took it to a pub??

Edited

I guarantee it's a scam, insurance fraud probably.

Wiseplumant · 11/04/2026 08:37

That's quite a nice one, some of the others are a ott.

I'm glad there's a thread about this. So many unanswered questions!

Probably a fake one, the bag thief wouldn't know, someone still has the real one and the insurance cheque i suspect. The whole story is beyond fishy.

MandemChickenShop · 11/04/2026 08:52

The headline valuation is misleading. A couple of full sets, with the whiskey sold for $2m, but they only sold 2 of 7 sets. £100k the true value

Fizbosshoes · 11/04/2026 08:57

The value of the bag, the laptop, and the other items without the egg would make me not want to put it down, outside a pub! 🤣

Bjorkdidit · 11/04/2026 09:01

Someone needs to do a deep dive on this and produce a podcast series or something. People need answers.

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 11/04/2026 22:36
