Man jailed for stealing handbag that contained £2.2m Fabergé egg - BBC News

To wonder why anyone would take a Fabergé egg with them to the pub? Obviously it was a horrendous crime for the man to take the bag and he deserves to go to prison, but what would possess someone to take a bag containing such a valuable artifact to a pub, in Soho no less?

He'd have known it was worth something. He probably sold it for next to nothing to some dodgy jeweller or something.

It says in one article she has been calling the police every day. Suggesting in my mind that she is racked with anxiety. Incredibly stupid thing to do - even take it out at all - but I think she’s very sadly paying with her mental health. I feel very sorry for her

Londonrach1 · 10/04/2026 07:13

Yanbu. Can't believe anyone do that and be so stupid to think taking the egg to the pub was a good idea. How on earth she kept her job.

MerryGuide · 10/04/2026 07:15

What a story, definitely feels like there's more going on with it.
Do we know what the job is?

Thinking of all the security the G4S type companies have for moving a bit of cash, so the idea of wandering around with this egg in a bag is comical

mjf981 · 10/04/2026 07:39

Maybe its her lucky egg, and she was hoping to find a really good shag down the pub?

Tableforjoan · 10/04/2026 07:58

This was just such a bizzare story. There has to be more to it.

@BrieHuggerwonder if she had a red rubber glove on her head.

🤣🤣🤣

drippingsap · 10/04/2026 09:04

I though i posted this yesterday but perhaps there’s a link eg family business hence why she kept her job.

Agree. I know someone who had to deliver some expensive jewellery to a customer in London. Around £250,000 tops, and a really short journey, but still had to take a car plus two security guards. The fact she was taking the egg and watch anywhere in her handbag suggests that it’s not worth much at all.

Yes, items worth SO much money, insurance paid out a pittance in comparison and they’ve still not been found.

What the hell was she thinking?

I bet she won’t be top of any promotion list.

She was the CEO of the company.

Gillthepill · 10/04/2026 09:24

We were talking about this as a family too.

As someone whose 24 year old daughter had her bag (containing her macbook) stolen from a pub in Soho, with the cards used at a nearby shop to buy alcohol and cigarettes within minutes, I'm kind of surprised the thief got a custodial sentence tbh. People have served less time for causing death by dangerous driving.

The article itself says the bag was "placed between her legs on the floor ...". Someone really should have subbed that and amended it to "feet". Journalism nowadays, honestly☹.

Just what I was thinking. It’s not fair to penalise the thief just because he happened to nick a priceless egg. He just bucked a bag.

it still sounds like an inside job to me.

I don't think it's a co-incidence that the company that owned this egg were Irish and the man who took it was arrested in Ireland in spite of the fact that he's from London.

But yes, she's a stupid woman. There's a fair few about.

YerMotherWasAHamster · 10/04/2026 09:31

Tbh I would assume she was in on it.

I wouldn’t even put my own handbag, that obviously would never have a £2.2m Faberge egg in it, on the floor between my legs outside a Soho pub cos of bloody thieves, so what on earth was she thinking 🤯

This thought came to my mind as soon as I read it. However, according to her mother she is ‘very upset’ Who on earth would think it was ok to take it to a pub in the first place? You’d have thought she’d want to get it somewhere safe as soon as possible.

Saw this yesterday and thought the same.

Even more stunned to see that apparently she still works for the company.

Odd story, but also it baffles me why these are worth so much. Clearly I have no taste, but to me they seem rather ugly.

You need to see them in real life.

They are exquisite. Pictures on the internet don't really do Faberge Eggs justice lol.

I have done, I just think they look a bit naff. Like I say, maybe I just have no taste.

MyThreeWords · 10/04/2026 09:43

I'm hoping that the thief sold it for a tenner, and that the purchaser gave it to his/her child for Easter, perhaps as part of an Easter egg hunt.

Bet the child was pissed off when she couldn't find a bit that was actually made of chocolate.

Faberge eggs are so blingy and horrible that a child's toy box is probably the best place for them though.
