Man jailed for stealing handbag that contained £2.2m Fabergé egg - BBC News

To wonder why anyone would take a Fabergé egg with them to the pub? Obviously it was a horrendous crime for the man to take the bag and he deserves to go to prison, but what would possess someone to take a bag containing such a valuable artifact to a pub, in Soho no less?

An "opportunistic" thief is jailed for stealing a handbag from a pub that happened to contain a £2.2m Fabergé egg.

I’m amazed she kept her job.

Seeing it on the news earlier my adult kids were all debating if he’d been stitched up - get the petty criminal to steal the bag with no idea as to the true value and then live on the money for the faberge stuff while he carries the can. I can’t say I blame them for wondering!

Absolute rotten luck for this to happen on Bring Your Fabergé Egg to Work Day.

I'm normally not someone to blame the victim of a crime but...

I know! Who the hell has 2m golden diamond encrusted egg in their handbag, then get distracted by a pub on the way home, pop out for a cig, get completely lost in thought and boom, next thing you know the bag is gone! Like if I was carrying that in my bag I'd take an uber or probably even a black cab, talking with someone constantly on the phone so that they know mine and the egg's exact and realtime whereabouts, clutching the bag for my dear life, until I get it home safe. Hell, I'd put an airtag on it, and all. If someone was so crazy that they'd just let a random woman carry it around in their handbag, that is. How, just how, was she so blasé about it that she randomly took it to a pub??

drippingsap · 10/04/2026 00:20

Maybe it’s her family’s business? Parents, DHs, that would explain the leniency.

drippingsap · 09/04/2026 23:43

@driftingdownintomiami surely they had to because as you say why on earth would she still have a job?

Edited

Because it’s all part of a larger and more complex plot. I haven’t worked out the full details yet, but there’s more to this than meets the eye.

Bellavida99 · 10/04/2026 00:30

We don’t have lockers at work anymore and I hate it if I have to take laptop to pub. I’d be a nervous wreck with that bounty in my bag

I agree that something seems a bit fishy

I was so surprised she was still employed, gross misconduct straight off, surely.

Yes, items worth SO much money, insurance paid out a pittance in comparison and they’ve still not been found.

What the hell was she thinking?

I bet she won’t be top of any promotion list.

Toddlerteaplease · 10/04/2026 02:11

@BrieHuggerwonder if she had a red rubber glove on her head.

GoodVibesHere · 10/04/2026 02:42

God imagine having tell your boss you'd lost the egg, I'd be crapping myself going in to work that day.

Oh come on, she was definitely in on it!!

But what about the bloke who stole her bag? Was he really just a common or garden thief, stealing to fund his habit or was he in on it too?

If he wasn't in on it, what did he do with the egg? Imagine him going through the bag, seeing what he could sell, watch, laptop, vouchers etc fab. Use her card to buy booze and bags using contactless, cool. Some weird looking ornament, chuck that and the bag in the canal.

How many 20 somethings would know a Faberge egg if it fell out of a handbag they'd just nicked in a pub?

But maybe it wasn't the victim's decision to take the egg to the exhibition herself? Perhaps her employers were too lax or tight to sort proper transport and railroaded her into it?

Can you imagine if she's a Mumsnetter and the AIBU. AIBU to not want to do this for work- they never do things properly and are always cutting corners. I have to take some items (can't say what as they're too outing) to a work event tonight but I've arranged to meet a friend in Soho on the way as I'll have time to kill but some of the items are rather unique and irreplaceable. I've said they should arrange a courier but they won't as it will cost loads and 'I'm going anyway'. AIBU?

As someone whose 24 year old daughter had her bag (containing her macbook) stolen from a pub in Soho, with the cards used at a nearby shop to buy alcohol and cigarettes within minutes, I'm kind of surprised the thief got a custodial sentence tbh. People have served less time for causing death by dangerous driving.

The article itself says the bag was "placed between her legs on the floor ...". Someone really should have subbed that and amended it to "feet". Journalism nowadays, honestly☹.

BewareoftheLambs · 10/04/2026 04:37

Odd story, but also it baffles me why these are worth so much. Clearly I have no taste, but to me they seem rather ugly.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 10/04/2026 04:43

The bloke has no idea what the bag or contents were worth and just swapped it for drugs.

Never go out without mine

😂😂

Yeah I don’t think I’d be putting that ornament in a bag down anywhere, let alone a pub. Really not a good idea.

Nevertheless I’m glad the thief was punished.

My first thought was that as Someone Of Ample Boobage I would shove it down my cleavage if I simply HAD to stop off at the pub. I can fit a whole bag of M&Ms plus a bottle of wine without it being obvious depending on what I'm wearing so a Faberge egg would be a doddle.

thetinsoldier · 09/04/2026 23:29

No, but he clearly sold it on somewhere and it hasn’t been recovered!

But the guy was a complete low life. Despite the TV and films showing fences who can shift anything, I doubt he sold it.

In all likelihood, he didn't even know it was valuable and realised it was something that was unusual and could ID him. So he chucked it in the bin
