Is this a spider bite? Worried about Mum. Graphic photo.

My Mum is disabled and mentioned to me 4 days ago that whilst in bed reading the other night she noticed a spider run over her and we joked about how I would have been hysterical as I’m arachnophobic and we don’t know why as my Mum has always quite liked them!

The next day in the shower she noticed 2 tiny marks like a tiny spider bite.

2 days later, it now looks like this. I’ve told her she needs to get it checked in case it’s an infected false widow bite.

My Mum is quite vulnerable in terms of her health, one bad infection could quite literally kill her.

I had an infected False Widow bite last year and it was kind of like that but with a massive black scab/head.

It didn't itch but it hurt like hell. Pharmacist gave me three days of antibiotics which sorted it but I still have the scar.

Justcallmedaffodil · 08/04/2026 15:46

Looks like it could be an infected bite. Given her vulnerability it’s probably worth her arranging to see her GP, or at least getting a pharmacist to look at it.

Yellowpingu · 08/04/2026 15:48

Another vote for a trip to the pharmacist, be quicker than seeing GP and they can advise next steps

Muffsies · 08/04/2026 15:52

Could be. Get it seen to quickly, as it could ulcerate.

Those damn false widows are so common now, i keep seeing them all over tge place! I saw one hanging over a shop entrance right at head height (ready to jump down someone's collar) the other day. I batted it onto the floor and despatched it. They are the only spiders I will intentionally kill.

False widows walk, they don't dangle like other spiders.

You probably intentionally killed a different species.

smallglassbottle · 08/04/2026 16:25

False widows will only bite if they feel threatened. Spiders aren't aggressive, they just want to get on with their lives.

I think that bite needs attention as it may become infected.

I think they dangle….chatgpt told me this was a false widow and it was dangling from my dress hem when I saw it!

It was def. a false widow, I'm very used to seeing them now. I know what you mean though, they don't sit on a web and catch flies like a garden spider, but they absolutely do produce silk. This one was hanging by a thread of silk from the door frame, where it had a nest above.

Muffsies · 08/04/2026 16:53

This is a pic of a false widdow dangling upside down from a drain pipe.. after munching on a bat!

This was in the news if you want to check it out. I don't feel in any way guilty for smooshing these guys.

They do indeed produce silk. There was one on my wing mirror in its web.

Spiders do love a wing mirror, don't they.

They really do.

deplorabelle · 08/04/2026 17:00

Needs to be seen regardless of what bit her. If it's very red and hot, she feels generally unwell or the red mark gets a lot bigger over a few hours it's an urgent care visit

Innermagnolia · 08/04/2026 17:05

Ouch! Your poor mum.
I had a spider bite and was given antibiotics by the GP. It soon went from what you have shown to more redness and swelling developing around it. I visited the pharmacist first and they advised me to go to the GP.

PurpleLovecats · 08/04/2026 17:07

My husband was bitten by a false widow, his whole hand swelled up, it was incredibly nasty. You should pop her to the pharmacist I think.

MadisonMontgomery · 08/04/2026 17:13

I had a probable spider bite a few years ago, it turned black with green pus then when the scab fell off it left a literal hole! It was ace.

WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady · 08/04/2026 17:13

Please have this looked at asap especially if the surrounding skin is hot or ‘waxy’ feeling.

You forgot the wee donkey.

WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady · 08/04/2026 17:16

And I know this sounds dramatic but don’t wait for a pharmacy as they might not recognise risk in the same way as a&e. My mum’s GP didn’t.

pinkgirl9 · 08/04/2026 17:39

Thanks all! Have secured Mum a GP appt for 9:40 tomorrow so will take her as stepdad will be at work.
