School as child care

Differentforgirls · 07/04/2026 18:45

From another thread.

A poster said that state schools are there for helping parents to work. Therefore teachers are childminders. Teachers!

I think schools are there to educate our children and, though the staff go above and beyond these days, that is their primary function.

It's painful isn't it?

We now seemed to have reaches a point where it seems to be OK to go to work while your children go to school if you "value education" though it seems quite unclear who is looking after the children while they are at school if not the teachers.

It's apparently not OK to go to work while your children go to school if you expect your children to be looked after by teachers even if you value education and want your child to learn at school because teachers only function is education and they shouldn't be looking after children at all, despite it being a pretty big bloody part of their job to ensure children are kept safe and cared for in their classroom.

Have I got it right?

Don’t forget. If you dare mention the world childcare that automatically means you don’t value education!

It's mad because even the government view school and education as childcare

"According to section 18 of the Childcare Act 2006, childcare is any form of care for a child, including education or any other supervised activity"

But the OP knows best obviously!

Childcare Act 2006

An Act to make provision about the powers and duties of local authorities and other bodies in England in relation to the improvement of the well-being of young children; to make provision about the powers and duties of local authorities in England and...

I’d quite like someone (ideally OP) to tell me where else I can send my school age children, mon-fri in term time, while I work and don’t choose a school (because I don’t value teachers and their level of education). None of my DDs particularly enjoy school, but annoyingly I have to keep a roof over our heads, so where else could they go.

Actually, had a look. They said that schools are there to help people bring their children up.

I think that is really sad that you believe your DC gained nothing from their time in school. Maybe you didn't value their education enough.

Just as an aside.

We’re at 31 pages, mainly because I have ignored people who have a) reported me, b) took my op personally, c) think they know the qualifications for primary teachers in 4 countries of the UK when they work in one and d) have constantly sought my attention because they haven’t understood the plain English in my OP.

To all the Primary school staff who have posted, I applaud every single one of you.

You are not “child care”, you are educators.

Thank you.

To all Secondary school staff, this was never about you but just want to say that I appreciate the way you can change a child’s life.

Thank you.

To all ASN school staff, you have the hardest job and I don’t know how you cope day to day.

Thank you.

This has been a lesson for me. That parents see education as child care. It’s awful.

Maybe it should be a lesson for to learn to read properly.

No one anywhere has said that they don't value education. But that school also provides a dual function of looking after children at a time when parents can work. As you did yourself.

And for all your sucking up to teachers, I think it's highly offensive to them you merely view them as "educators" and don't value or acknowledge the vital role they play in safeguarding children, the mentoring role they play and the other skills and knowledge they have in helping to nuture and develop a child's skills and wellbeing.

Even the ones that you have name called and abused? What about the university lecturer that you called mentally ill, do you value her?

That’s a terribly circular argument right there.

You can’t be mean to me because I’m an “educator” of children. You’re supposed to respect me, remember?

Whenisitmyturntorest · 11/04/2026 17:16

I can't see what we have gained from this thread other than an insight into the negative impact those that are unwilling to listen to others and broaden their mind can have on society.

I'm sure you must be thrilled to know you're only respected for being an "educutor" and the other highly skilled and important parts of your job simply don't matter..

If that’s teachers (and TAs )were , there wouldn’t be such a shortage of teachers and retention crisis.

Constantly announcing you’re ignoring someone is, by default, not ignoring them

We’re at 31 pages because people cannot believe you’re arguing against yourself with an argument that no one else is having.

not one single person has said they don’t value teachers. And yet you keep bleating on with that argument.

The only thing that has come out of this thread is how hilariously poor your comprehension skills are.

Awaiting you posting a gif in lieu of an actual argument in great interest.

OP, where is your dignity? You say you are retired so I presume you are at least as old as me or a bit older; I am 55. Don’t you think that over age, we see the world isn’t black and white, and we get more empathy and ability to reflect and have better communication skills? Of course many young people can do this as well, but I would not expect somebody older in years to be squabbling on here and responding in a childish and vindictive way.

You are retired and it sounds like your children are doing well as adults. Isn’t that enough for you? Why do you feel the need to effectively put down younger working mothers who put their children in childcare by necessity? Why is not using nurseries etc for long hours still such a big part of your identity?

Nobody here thinks childcare is the primary function of school. Can you not see that?

Mostly, your behaviour on this thread has been rather embarrassing. You have created an argument that nobody has made and seem determined to have the last word. It could have been an interesting discussion, but your spiteful comments have been unnecessary. And you have not apologised to the person you accused of being mentally ill. What a low blow.

You need to reflect and do better. There is still time as we are not on 40 pages yet…
