To think this is fucking dreadful

Seen a story on various ‘news’ outlets today about a woman apparently being hunted for by police for defecating on a shelf in The Range and leaving. I’m not linking the article because I think it’s terrible but there is a clear photo of the woman in question.

Hundreds of horrible and jokey comments. No empathy or consideration that this could have been someone with any number of cognitive issues and/or digestive disease. Now their photo is plastered all over social media. How humiliating for them and the family. Is this what we have become as a society? Does this actually pass for news and would police resources not be better spent elsewhere? Honestly I find it cruel, grim and shocking.

God the range have it rough. I was in there the other day and a huge argument had broken out because someone had let their dog poop on the floor. Thought that was bad.

It must be a The Range thing 😆
Years ago, I saw someone change their baby's nappy on a display table... and they left the bagged nappy there.

Lifesd · 06/04/2026 23:42

I can’t wrap my head around the logistics of this - in my former local range it was always heaving! How would you position yourself on the shelf and get away with it during working hours?!

DangerQuakeRhinoSnake · 06/04/2026 23:43

OP just be grateful they didn't share the CCTV of the actual incident!

I thought this too! In our local Range, the shelves are jam packed with stuff - no room for anyone's bum in there.
How very odd.

This was one in Blackpool so I bet they see all sorts!

Joystir59 · 07/04/2026 00:21

I'm off to Google this story.

It was the Banbury, Oxfordshire store.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 07/04/2026 06:59

There’s always more to stories than they publish. It seems unlikely the police would be looking for her if it was an incontinence thing

Overcookedch · 06/04/2026 23:35

If you can’t stop yourself from pooing on a shelf then arguably you shouldn’t be free to roam around the streets. There’s no excuse for that behaviour what so ever and as I say if you’re THAT cognitively impaired then you should have a full time carer.

Ah yes anyone with a disability should be locked up at home you’re completely right. Nice to see ableism is still alive and well on MN.

Unless there is a LOT more to this story, I just think it is a ridiculous waste of police resources and complete overkill to share her photo and turn this into some sort of man hunt. Yes its horrible for the staff but its not that uncommon for people to have accidents, as I said my relative has seen it happen many times in the supermarket where she works.

The picture is incredibly clear and people will definitely recognise her. I just think it’s humiliating not just for her but her family.

I've just googled it too. I cannot imagine the logistics of this. Surely it must have been some kind of dirty protest rather than an unavoidable accident.

Do you honestly think the police would be looking for her if there wasn’t more to it? And showing her full picture is unusual. There is obviously a reason. They don’t look for. muggers etc.

And people are now googling the story so that’s even more people that will see it!

Surely having your photo shared in relation to any crime is humiliating for the criminal and their family.

I bet if it was a 25 year old man you wouldn't be so sympathetic.

SexIsNotNebulous · 07/04/2026 07:11

Definitely more to the story here. This woman had trousers on, if it was a medical issue I pretty sure most people would rather shit in their knickers, with trousers as double protection, than drop them in a store.

Im suspecting mental health or substance abuse that led her to be unaware of where she actually was.

It may be that the police want to identify her, not to prosecute but as safe guarding, either way I don’t think what she had done needed to be put in the paper, it could have just been said they were looking for her.

the update on crime stoppers said as of yesterday they were no longer looking for her, so she’s been found.

suchgreatheights2 · 06/04/2026 22:56

I mean you never can tell but she didn’t particularly look like someone who would do this. She looked fairly old, well dressed etc. Obviously that doesn’t mean it wasn’t intentional or anti social but it wouldn’t have been my immediate conclusion by looking at her. However it’s so ridiculous and odd that the police have released a photo that maybe you’re right and there is more to it.

She could still have a shitting fetish. There will be a reason the police are looking for her.

What does someone who would do this look like? 🤔 My mum was a cleaner and over the year cleaned many places like solicitors offices, doctors surgeries with toilets only used by the doctors etc and the mess they left and stuff they did was awful. You wouldn’t expect those people in respected jobs to do it either but they did. There are some very weird and fucked up people out there.

I expect there is more to this, but if you really felt strongly about this not being in the news, why post it on mumsnet to give it more attention. I probably wouldn’t have been aware of this story, but now I am. Thanks to you and your bit of virtue signalling or whatever it was meant to be. 🙄

JMSA · 07/04/2026 07:15

Manky bitch.
Who knows, maybe she wanted the notoriety. Nothing would surprise me these days.
On Mumsnet, you could get absolutely slated for the smallest misdemeanour. But shit on a shop shelf and it’s all good!

Pricelessadvice · 07/04/2026 07:16

I’m sorry but surely if you get caught in a situation like that in a shop, you just do it in your pants and leave pronto!
You don’t leave it on a shelf for someone else to clean up.

rwalker · 07/04/2026 07:17

Absolutely. This was a deliberate act and leaving it for others to deal with is reprehensible.
The only possible excuse could be dementia.

lol. So true. People have been told off on here on numerous threads over the weekend for buying their kids some gifts for Easter. They should have just come on here and told everyone they had shit in the Easter egg aisle in Tesco instead and all would have been fine.

There are fucked up people around that get off on this stuff. Mumsnet has poo trolls, piss trolls, period trolls. People should wise up.

Where does that poster say that "everyone with a disability needs to be locked up at home"??

You lose the argument when you go completely OTT with hyperbole

If she is so ill she shits on a shelf in public then she definitely needs 24 hour care

Walkden · 07/04/2026 07:48

"No empathy or consideration that this could have been someone with any number of cognitive issues and/or digestive disease."

Come off it,OP. If this was a man everyone would be saying "men are fucking disgusting" not excusing this deplorable behaviour on IBS or similar....

Superhansrantowindsor · 07/04/2026 08:20

I suspect the police know more. I used to work in retail. It happened once. It was a very, very elderly lady who clearly didn’t mean it. We just cleaned it up and felt desperately sorry for her. Calling the police wasn’t even considered for a second.

IsItOverYetPlease · 07/04/2026 08:28

Right so basically because you think she looks ok we shouldn't find her for what is an actual crime?

Do you have a list of who is fair game for justice and who is not?
